Welcome to WSU Libraries! In this guide, we’ll unlock the mysteries of call numbers and location prefixes. Knowing these helps you quickly locate and access your desired books.
Call Numbers
Books and material are arranged on our shelves according to the Library of Congress (LC) classification system. These call numbers uniquely identify and organize items near other material on the same or similar subjects. Consider the call number: LB2395 C65 1991.
◆LB defines the subject area. The call letters are typically arranged in alphabetical (字母的) order, starting from A and continuing through the alphabet. Knowing the letter(s) for your subject area gives you a place to start browsing the shelves. For example: A — Special request General Works; B — Special request Special request Philosophy, Psychology, Religion; D — Special request World History; G — Geography; H — Special request Social Sciences; J — Special request Political Science; K — Special request Law; L — Special request Education; M — Special request Music; N — Special request Arts; P — Special request Language and Literature; Q — Special request Science... For more, click here.
◆2395 is the classification number, which further distinguishes the subject matter. Read as a whole number: 1, 2, 3, 45, 100, 2430...
◆C65 is the Cutter number and usually represents the author’s last name. Find C, then 65. Read the number as a decimal (小数).
◆1991 is the year of publication.
Location Prefixes
Some call numbers have a location prefix. Location prefixes mean that the book or material is shelved in a special place, and may have loan restrictions. WSU uses the following prefixes:
Prefix Collection Library Location Loan Period
[Blank] Circulating Collection 2nd floor, 3rd floor, and 4th floor 21-day loan
Ref Reference Collection 1st floor Reference Area Library-use only
Res Reserve Collection 1st floor, Circulation Area Library-use only
Video Audiovisuals 2nd floor, Learning Resources Center Special request

Courage is a huge theme in my life, a quality I constantly seek, appreciate, and analyze. The root of “courage” is “cor”, the Latin word for heart. Originally, courage meant “to speak one’s mind by telling all one’s heart”. While courage is often associated with heroism nowadays, I believe true courage lies in being open and honest about who we are and how we feel.
I recently witnessed an example of true courage. During a mountain-climbing trip with my 15-year-old daughter and some college students, I noticed her struggling to keep up with the group. Despite my suggestions to rest, she persisted until she couldn’t breathe properly.
Panicked, I called out to the front for help, but there was no response, and we had no cellphone signal. Fortunately, two students just came back to check on us. They offered assistance and calmed us down. As we continued at a slower pace, they shared their own experiences, from starting out as beginners like my daughter to becoming consistently among the first to reach the peak.
“You know,” one of them said, looking at my daughter, “I was just like you when I started. But with practice and proper pace, you’ll get there too.”
“Yeah, don’t let your lack of experience stop you,” the other added. “It’s okay to admit when you’re struggling or not feeling alright. In fact, it’s important to speak up and ask for help when you need it. That’s how we improve and grow.”
Reaching the mountain top was a huge relief for both my daughter and me. However, the two students addressed the celebrating group directly, emphasizing the importance of staying together in tough environments. Their words led the group to apologize to us for overlooking our struggle.
I was totally amazed at their bravery, and my daughter learned that it’s okay to be the least experienced in a group. Courage, I’ve come to realize, has a ripple effect. Each time we choose courage, we inspire those around us to be a little braver and make the world a little better.
4. Why does the author mention the original meaning of courage
A. To argue for the truth of courage. B. To question the common belief of courage.
C. To show the changing meaning of courage. D. To compare different interpretations of courage
5. What did the two students suggest the daughter do
A. Compare herself with other climbers. B. Keep her struggles to herself
C. Speak up and ask for help when needed. D. Focus only on reaching the peak quickly.
6. Which action in the mountain-climbing story is an example of true courage
A. The group apologized to the mother and her daughter. B. The girl insisted on climbing despite difficulty.
C. The group celebrated the reach of the top. D. The two students pointed out the group’s fault.
7. What does the author intend to tell us
A. Kindness connects us all. B. Being a beginner takes courage.
C. With courage, everyone can be perfect. D. We don’t have to be a hero to be brave.
C
Dialects are a cultural resource and the collection of ordinary people’s wisdom. They promote the culture of a region. When an area’s dialect dies out, it means the failure of the local culture. Dialects are also an essential material to study the history of a country’s language and its evolution, making up for lack of documents.
According to UNESCO, nearly 7,000 languages and dialects worldwide are facing extinction (消亡), falling out of use at the rate of about one every two weeks. In China, there are over 120 languages at risk of extinction. More than half of them is spoken by fewer than 10,000 people.
Xu Kaifei, a new media journalist who has a 7-year-old son finds that Hainanese is not being spoken by the younger generation: “Children do not use the dialect, and some can’t even understand it.” So, he started to teach his son the language word by word, uploading videos on social media platforms for viewers interested in Hainanese.
Due to education and work where standard Chinese is used, many young people who spoke dialects have turned to standard Chinese. Some think speaking only a dialect is a barrier to finding jobs in cities, where standard Chinese is widely used. So, they stop using their native tongue. In many families, the parents guide the switch for their children.
To research dialects, Zhao Rixin, a professor studying dialects at the Beijing Language and Culture University, has visited over 100 places, mostly village. “Villages are the best sites as their dialects are well preserved, thanks to the small-scale input of outsiders,” he said. His last survey was done in a village in Chengde, Hebei Province in north China, whose dialect is close to standard Chinese. “The dialects in north and northeast China have been better preserved than in other places”, he said. The dialects of northeast China are popular due to their culture, tradition and economic development. The development of the media and genres (类型) of art has also enhanced people’s pride in this region’s language
8. Why are dialects considered valuable
A. They are created by both the official and the folks.
B. They are mainly used in formal education systems.
C. They document the development of a country’s language.
D. They have been replaced by written documents in most regions.
9. Why was Xu Kaifei’s son mentioned in-paragraph 3
A. To show younger generations’ dialect loss. B. To explain how social media spreads dialects.
C. To give an example of a child learning Hainanese. D. To highlight a parent’s effort to save dialect.
10. What does “the switch” in Paragraph 4 refer to
A. Speaking standard Chinese in big cities. B. Speaking more dialects when finding jobs.
C. Giving up the native tongue for the standard Chinese. D. Taking seriously parents’ advice on language learning.
11. What do Zhao Rixin’s words imply
A. The northern dialects are popular and easier to understand.
B. Dialects are better preserved in areas with fewer outsiders.
C. Many local dialects are very similar to Standard Chinese.
D. Economic development in the north is faster than that in the south.
D
“A beautiful field of flowers can be a rather noisy place. It’s just that we can’t hear the sounds.” Scientists at Tel Aviv University have done a six-year experiment, which proves (证明) that plants make noise in certain stressful situations.
Plants produce a high frequency (频率) clicking sound, and when short of water, or damaged, the clicks become far more regular. They also make different sounds, depending on whether they are thirsty or injured. “Each plant and each type of stress is related to a specific sound,” said Professor Lilach Hadany. who led the research study.
Focusing particularly on tomatoes, wheat and corn, the plants were placed in a soundproof (隔音的) room and recorded by microphones. Some plants were short of water, others cut, and a control group was left undamaged. The researchers used an algorithm (算法) to separate the noises, successfully telling the difference between the sounds depending on whether they were dry or cut. The algorithm did this in a greenhouse setting which included far more surrounding sounds, but it was still able to recognize the particular cries for help of the plants.
Generally speaking, the human ear can hear sounds up to around 20kHz, while the sounds produced by plants are about 40-80kHz, far beyond our hearing. “The sounds made by plants can’t be heard by humans but can probably be heard by various animals, such as bats, mice and insects,” Hadany tells us. Though this has yet to be proven, it’s possible that these creatures use this information to choose which plants to eat.
A study led by Reda Hassanien of China Agricultural University in Beijing years ago, also proved that plants reacted to sound waves, with some plants greatly increasing their yield. While evidence shows that plants can react to sounds, there’s no evidence today that they can actually hear them.
12. What can we know from the six-year experiment
A. Plants of different types make the sound of the same frequency
B Plants produce more regular sound in certain stressful situations.
C. Plants make sounds with a much lower frequency when stressed
D. Plants make the sound of the same frequency whatever the situation.
13. What is the algorithm used for in the research
A. To record the sounds B. To control the sounds. C. To produce the sounds D. To identify the sounds.
14. What has been proven by scientists according to the passage
A. Plants can hear each other’s cry for help.
B. Animals can hear the sounds made by plants.
C Plants can make sounds and respond to sound waves.
D. Animals decide what to eat based on the sounds plants make.
15. Which of the following is the best title of the text
A. Sounds That We Can’t Hear. B. Beautiful Songs from Plants.
