Thinking like Scientists Together: Discover, Question and Create
13:00-14:30, Monday, 29 December
This event is free but booking is required.
About the event
Step into the museum as your laboratory and spend an afternoon thinking like a scientist. Designed especially for curious minds aged 10-13, this hands-on workshop invites young people to explore the natural world through careful observation, questioning and creativity.
Together, participants will build their own “Dodo key”, a simple research tool to help them notice details, ask better questions and use evidence (证据) from a real museum. They will then put their new tool into action on a guided discovery trail (路径) through the galleries, exploring fossils, animals, minerals and more.
Back in the workshop space, the group will discover how scientists, artists and inventors borrow ideas from nature, and how patterns, shapes and structures in the museum’s collections can inspire new designs. Each young person will create their own “inspiration drawing”, turning something they have seen in the museum into an invention, an artwork or an imaginative design, with fun prizes to celebrate different kinds of scientific thinking and creativity.
Participants will have the opportunity to develop confidence and curiosity, and interact with their peers (同龄人) in a supportive museum environment, independently of their families.
This is not a family activity, and we kindly ask that adults do not join unless their presence is really required. If your children require an adult to stay with them, please let us know when you book a place so that we can plan properly and ensure the activity remains focused and comfortable for all participants, and follow our safeguarding rules.

Rachel Petersen, an Australian mom, was surprised by two photos from the past and present, because the two people in the photos looked so similar that it felt like almost being a magic moment.
One day, Rachel posted a picture online, showing a black-and-white photo of her great-grandmother, Hilary Sumption, whom the family lovingly called “Memar”. Memar had passed away when Rachel was just 9 years old, but Rachel still had lively memories of her. The next slide in the post showed a picture of Rachel’s young daughter, Nyah. The resemblance (相像) between Nyah and Memar was striking, even though they were generations apart.
Rachel’s grandmother, Linda March, was the first to notice the similarity when Nyah turned two. While having tea one morning, Linda took out an old photo of Memar, and everyone immediately saw the resemblance. “They are complete opposites, so it was crazy to see Nyah twinning with my great-grandmother,” Rachel said.
This discovery brought back warm memories of her great-grandmother’s home in Merewether, New South Wales. Rachel remembered a large tree in the yard, and a winding path that felt like an adventure to her as a child. “On Wednesdays, Memar would come over for dinner, and we’d play together,” Rachel shared. She also remembered how Memar loved showing her jewelry (首饰), and Rachel was fortunate to inherit (继承) some pieces after Memar passed away.
Rachel’s post drew 1.4 million views. Many online users were amazed by the resemblance between Nyah and Memar. Some commented, “It’s unbelievable how genetics work,” while others noted how special it was for Rachel to see her daughter reflect her great-grandmother’s features.
For Rachel, this experience felt surreal but special. “It still blows my mind,” she said, reflecting on the fact that millions of people had seen her beloved Memar and her daughter, Nyah, side by side.
4. How did Rachel probably feel about the two photos

7. What can we learn about Rachel

CHICO, Calif. — The Gateway Science Museum at Chico State has received a big donation from the Children’s Science Education Endowment Fund through the North Valley Community Foundation.
The funding, totaling $37, 202 over two years, aims to improve the museum’s educational programs and exhibits for K-12 students and the public, including field-trip scholarships and bus money for underserved schools in Butte County. Picking foreign movies that US viewers might like is a big part of a film company s job. Maxime Cottray, the main operator at a studio, says,“The US market is hard for movies not in English. America did not grow up reading subtitles (字幕) or hearing dubbing (配音) like Europe did.” A new AI-driven dubbing tool may now make this step easier.
A recent Swedish sci-fi film, Watch the Skies, used AI — fed with its sound and picture — to make actors look as if they are speaking English. Its English version opened in 110 USAMC Theatres in May. “Without the dub, it would never have reached US screens,” Cottray says, noting it found a far wider crowd than the small audience it would have had otherwise. AMC plans more releases like this.
This kind of AI, built by London-based Flawless, shifts acting from one language to another. Mann, who made films like Heist, felt old dubbing lost the feeling of the original: “Classic dubbing feels off, acted in a different way — lower quality for world viewers.”
Flawless tech, rooted in 2018 research, uses face finding, face recognition, spot tracking and 3D mapping to keep the actor’s first take, saving cash and hours with no need to re-film. Watch the Skies was the first full film to get this visual dub. The tool can also drop in better takes or swap lines while keeping the mood the same.
The world dubbing market is set to rise from $4 bn in 2024 to $7.6 bn by 2033. Mann says cost shifts per job — about one tenth of other routes — and buyers include major streamers.
He feels the tech widens audiences. He says, “Great films and shows out there are just never watched by English speakers, because many skip dubbing and subtitles.” Mann adds, “It is not here to replace actors. It is simply a tool for creatives — power to make better art.”
12. Why is the US market tough for foreign language films
A. American audiences prefer local films.
B. The dubbing quality of foreign films is poor.
C. Americans don’t accept subtitles or dubbing culturally.
D. Foreign language films are expensive for US theaters.
13. What did Scott Mann think of traditional dubbing
A. It was expensive for small film projects. B. It didn’t match the original performances.
C. It couldn’t perfectly express original feelings. D. It was more popular among global viewers.
14. Which of the following is a feature of Flawless’ tech
A. It relies on reshoots for accurate dubbing.
B It lengthens production but cuts costs greatly.
C. It replaces original actors’ voices with AI-generated ones.
D. It combines technologies to keep the original.
15. What is the best title of the text
A. The Difficulties of Foreign Films Entering the US Market
B. Traditional Dubbing vs. AI-driven Dubbing
C. The Growth of the Global Dubbing Market
D. AI-driven Dubbing: Opening New Doors for International Films

It was a dark afternoon when my classmate, Tom, came to me with many English test papers in his hands. His head was down, and his eyes were filled with sadness. “I just don’t know what to do anymore. My English grades keep dropping, and I feel so lost,” he said, his voice shaking with sadness.
I took a deep breath, knowing that Tom needed more than just words of kindness. I had to think of a plan to help him make things better. “Tom, don’t worry. We’ll work this out together. First, let’s look at your test papers and see where you’re making the most mistakes,” I suggested, trying to sound as sure as possible.
We spent the next few hours looking carefully at his test papers, marking the areas where he had the most problems. It became clear that his biggest weak points were in grammar and reading comprehension (理解力). “Okay, here’s what we’ll do. I’ll lend you my grammar books, and we can start with some basic exercises. For reading comprehension, we’ll practice reading a little bit every day and work on improving your speed and understanding,” I explained.
Tom nodded, his eyes showing a bit of hope. “Thank you so much for doing this for me. I really thank you for it,” he said, his voice filled with thanks.
Over the next few weeks, we followed the plan carefully. Every day after school, we would meet in the library and spend two hours reviewing grammar rules and practicing reading comprehension. Tom was a quick learner, but he still had problems with some of the more difficult grammar ideas. I tried my best to explain them in different ways, using examples from our daily lives.
One day, as we were working on a very difficult grammar exercise, Tom suddenly looked up at me with a smile on his face. “I think I get it now! This is so much clearer than before,” he said loudly, his eyes shining with joy. I felt a sense of pride come over me, knowing that our hard work was finally leading to success.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
As his English skills improved, Tom behaved differently.
