传统意义上讲，英国的商店有一月和七月两个促销季。虽然现在的商店只要想赚钱就可以开展促销活动，但是最常见的两个促销节还是在一月和七月。一月促销季是一年中最大的零售事件。英国的节礼日（12月26日）标志着年末清仓季的开始，持续到1月份。在节礼日那天，许多商店会有折上再九折活动。七月促销季又叫夏季促销，从六月开始持续到七月底。在各大百货商店，折扣从五折到七五折不等。一些商店有自己的店内促销节，也会斥巨资于促销和宣传。
相比较，中国的促销季主要由线上购物拉动。现如今，越来越多的人选择网购。网购的风靡一时带来了如双十一和双十二等购物狂欢节。这是购物者的节日。例如，双十一就从午夜零点开始，是一个持续一天的购物节。自2009年第一次举办双十一购物节以来，双十一活动每年都在打破上一年的销售记录。购物者们会熬夜以最划算的价格购买他们最想买的东西。这已然成为中国购物文化的新风潮。
