I’m glad to be invited here to share my story today. In myleisure time, I like creating detailed designs on fallen leaves. I like to cut, or carve, many different leaf designs.Examples of my work include a frog holding an umbrella, animals jumping happily, and ocean waves. I beganmaking my leaf art in 2020. Now, I have many fans around the world who discovered my designs on social media.I began to create art on fallen leaves just because I wanted to find something to do in my free time. But later when Iwas doing that, I found my work gives me peaceful feelings to deal with a health issue. The condition I strugglewith is called ADHD. People with ADHD can experience difficulties such as mental focus, directing attention, andorganizing and controlling urges. Now I don’t struggle with this condition as much as before. Creating art hasgreatly benefited me. But I’m also very happy that my art can give other people enjoyment as well. This is my story.Thank you for your listening.21. B 22. C 23. D24. B 25. A 26. D 27. One possible version:The basket shook violently back and forth. We were thrown from side to side as the balloon bounced acrossthe uneven ground. I kept my head covered and held tightly to the edge, feeling the impact with every jolt. Onecouple cried out, but I focused on staying low and bracing myself. The pilot shouted calm instructions, remindingus not to stand until he gave the all-clear. Dust and grass flew into the air, making it hard to breathe. Finally, themovement slowed, and the balloon came to a stop, half-collapsed on its side. The few seconds, during which the balloon was landing on the grass, was like hours. When the pilotconfirmed it was safe, we slowly stood up, shaken but unharmed. Despite the rough landing, everyone felt a senseof relief and even excitement. We had faced an unexpected challenge together. The ground crew arrived quickly, helping us out and beginning the process of packing the balloon. Looking back, though frightening, the experiencedeepened my appreciation for nature’s unpredictability and the skill of the pilot who kept us safe. 1. For them, it’s just normal. This hit home for me as I was sitting with my 2-year-old grandson on a sofa over the Spring Festival holiday. Ihad brought a children’s book to read. It had simple words and colorful pictures — a perfect match for his age.Picture this: my grandson sitting on my lap as I hold the book in front so he can see the pictures. As I read, hereaches out and pokes (戳) the page with his finger. What’s up with that He just likes the pictures, I thought. Then I turned the page and continued. He poked thepage even harder. I nearly dropped the book. I was confused: Is there something wrong with this kid Then I realized what was happening. He was actually a stranger to books. His father frequently amused theboy with a tablet computer which was loaded with colorful pictures that come alive when you poke them. Hethought my storybook was like that.Sorry, kid. This book is not part of your high-tech world. It’s an outdated, lifeless thing. An antique, like yourgrandfather. Well, I may be old, but I’m not hopelessly challenged, digitally speaking. I edit video and produceaudio. I use mobile payment. I’ve even built websites. There’s one notable gap in my new-media experience, however: I’ve spent little time in front of a camera, since I have a face made for radio. But that didn’t stop China Daily from asking me last week to share a personalstory for a video project about the integration of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei province.Anyway, grandpa is now an internet star — two minutes of fame! Researchers distinguished between “criterion effort” — simplybelieving one studies hard — and “comparative effort” — believing one must work harder than peers. The results show that comparative effort can be damaging. When students feel they must work harder thanothers, they often interpret this as a sign of lacking natural talent. This hurts their “science self-concept” — thebelief that they can succeed in science. After analyzing data from 690 chemistry students, researchers found thatboth male and female students generally viewed extra effort as a signal of lower ability, which weakens theirconfidence. In contrast, criterion effort is beneficial. Students who believe they work hard, without comparing themselvesto others, tend to have a better self-concept. This pattern is particularly strong for women. Women may realize theyneed to work hard to overcome stereotypes (fixed ideas) that women are weak in science. Consequently, womenwho simply perceive themselves as working hard tend to perform better and feel more confident about theirscientific abilities. However, men respond differently. Their confidence is more influenced by their past actual achievements thanby their perception of effort. The study also revealed a feedback loop between effort and grades. Believing in one’shard work was linked to higher test scores, while comparing with others usually led to lower performance. Thisfinding highlights the importance of early positive experiences for students to understand the link between effortand success.Early STEM classes are famously difficult and often screen out students who feel they cannot succeed.Researchers suggest that students should focus on their own work and progress rather than comparing themselvesto peers. Understanding that effort is necessary for success, not a sign of failure, can help talented students remainin the science field.28. Why is comparative effort harmful to students’ science self-concept A. It leads to poor grades in exams.B. It implies a lack of natural ability.C. It distracts attention from learning.D. It ignores the actual difficulty of the subject.29. How does the perception of hard work affect female students A. They become less confident than men.B. They tend to question their own talent.C. They generally view it as a positive sign.D. They are more influenced by past achievements.30. What can be inferred about the relationship between effort and achievement A. High scores always result from hard work.B. Early success can encourage further hard work.C. Men benefit more from effort than women do.D. Comparative effort guarantees better performance.31. What are researchers advising STEM students to do A. Avoid difficult introductory courses.B. Realize effort is a sign of failure.C. Focus on their own individual effort.D. Believe in their talent regardless of gender.DScreens are steadily taking over more and more of our life, leading some researchers to worry about the effectof long-term use on older adults’ brain. It has been suggested that this might lead to so-called “digital dementia”— that depending on digital technology throughout our life might harm cognitive (认知的) functioning in our lateryears. But new research indicates this view doesn’t appear to be true, at least for the “digital pioneer” generation whofirst routinely used smartphones, computers and the Internet — and who are now reaching the age when cognitivedecline often starts to appear. In a paper published on Monday in Nature Human Behaviour researchers analyzed 57 studies of digitaltechnology use and cognitive function in more than 400,000 older adults across the world. They found that peoplein the “digital pioneer” generation who engaged more with digital technology did not have higher rates of cognitivedecline. In fact, technology use was associated with lower rates of cognitive decline. One reason some researchers worried about “digital dementia” was previous research that linked televisionviewing, a passive activity, with negative outcomes such as an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease (阿尔茨海默症). “On the surface, most computer or smartphone screentime might seem similarly passive,” says the new paper’sco-author Michael Scullin, a neuroscience researcher at Baylor University. “But for this group of middle-aged andolder adults, phones and computers have been used for mentally stimulating activities and for social connections, such as solving puzzles, engaging with the news, chatting with friends, or using reminders and alarms to help withdaily activities.”“This study provides a strong challenge to the widespread fears about ‘digital dementia’ and highlights thepotential of technology as a tool for cognitive enrichment,” says Chiara Scarampi, a neuroscientist at the Universityof Geneva, who was not involved with the study. “‘Digital dementia’ has always felt like a catchy but overstatedconcept to me,” she adds. “Cognitive offloading — using tools like reminders or GPS — is not harmful bynature. In fact, it can free up cognitive resources for more complex tasks.”32. What do we know about the “digital pioneer” generation A. They are addicted to digital technology.B. They start using digital tools at an old age.C. They are the first to use digital tools regularly.D. They start suffering from sharp cognitive decline.33. What is paragraph 4 mainly about A. The widespread use of digital tools.B. The analysis of the new research finding.C. The great complexity of mental activities.D. The implication of the previous research finding.34. What is Scarampi’s attitude toward “digital dementia” A. Approving. B. Tolerant. C. Critical. D. Unclear.35. What is the main finding of the new research mentioned in the text A. Digital technology use directly increases the risk of cognitive decline in older adults.B. Regular tech use may reduce the risk of cognitive decline in seniors.C. Older adults need more screen time to improve cognitive function.D. Passive activities are more effective than active tech use for cognitive health.第二节(共 5小题;每小题 2.5分,满分 12.5分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。It’s common for you to pressure your children to be smarter. 36 Forcing children to study may be theeasiest way for them to learn, but not the best way. There are several guidelines you can follow so that yourchildren see studying as a way to acquire new things. You should always remember you are not a teacher. Although you need to guarantee that your children arecompleting their homework without any mistakes, you shouldn’t do the homework for them. If you do, yourchildren won’t be able to address their own issues and will always depend on others for help. 37Besides, be cautious about rewarding children for good grades. If you abuse this, your children will onlyattempt to study for a reward. Getting bad grades, they’ll feel like a failure. Thus, it’s better to praise your childrenwhen they pass a test. 38 This way, they’ll see their mistakes as opportunities to improve and not seethemselves as failures.39 If you only spare no efforts to force your children to study, both you and they will be frustrated. Therefore, place emphasis on devoting time to other activities that are fundamental to your children’s development, like playing sports and watching movies. Some parents hold the belief that mental disorders lead to children’s lack of interest in study. 40 It’svery likely that their children are simply demotivated or disinterested. Therefore, it’s good to take the above tipsinto account. As a result, your children may find a genuine desire to study and do their own homework.A. That’s not necessarily the case.B. It is teachers’ duty to correct homework mistakes.C. You may enroll them in various after-class courses.D. If not, patiently show them how to do better next time.E. Instead, offer them guidance and tools to do self-research.F. Vital as study is, it’s not the only thing kids must focus on.G. In early 2020, I planned a trip to the Black Hills in South Dakota and arrived there on June 23rd, notknowing I was about to have an adventure. The most exciting part of my adventure in South Dakota happened on July 5th in Custer. I woke up at 3:47 am,crawled out of my sleeping bag, and ate an energy bar. Then I walked to a hot air balloon company in downtownCuster for a 5 am meeting. There, I met other sleepy tourists who were there for the same reason as me. Afterfilling out some paperwork and paying the fees, we got into a car and were taken to a field, followed by four trucksfull of colorful materials. In the field, I got out of the car and watched as four colorful hot air balloons were fitted and inflated (充气). Afew minutes later, I climbed into a basket along with other passengers. The basket was divided into four sectionsaround the pilot in the center. Two couples and a family were in the other sections. However, all good things had to come to an end. From the pilot’s radio, I learned that due to a sudden changein the weather, the wind became unstable, and we needed to find a safe place to land quickly. We seemed to be descending (下降 ) very fast. I noticed the pilot struggling against the wind. He wasconstantly adjusting the burner and the parachute vent (伞阀) to control the balloon’s descent speed, but the strongwind made it difficult.
