Societies all over the world name places in similar ways. Quite often there is no official naming ceremony but
places tend to be called names as points of reference by people. Then an organized body steps in and gives the
place a name. Frequently it happens that a place has two names: One is named by the people and the other by the
government. As in many areas, old habits die hard and the place continues to be called by its unofficial name long
after the meaning is lost.
Many roads and places in Singapore(新加坡)are named in order that the pioneers will be remembered by future
generations. Thus we have names such as Stamford Road and Raffles Place. This is in keeping with traditions in
many countries ---- in both the West and the East.
Another way of naming places is naming them after other places. Perhaps they were named to promote
第 5页/共 16页
friendships between the two places or it could be that the people who used to live there were originally from the
places that the roads were named after. The mystery is clearer when we see some of the roads named in former
British bases. If you step into Selector Airbase you will see Piccadilly Circus ---- obviously named by some
homesick Royal Air Force personnel.
Some places were named after the activities that used to go on at those places. Bras Basah Road is an interesting
example, “Base Basah” means “wet rice” in Malay(马来语). Now why would anyone want to name a road “Wet
Rice Road” The reason is simple. During the pioneering days, wet rice was laid out to dry along this road.
A few roads in Singapore are named by their shapes. There is “Circular Road” for one. Other roads may have
part of their names to describe their shapes, like “Paya Lebar Crescent”. This road is called a crescent(月牙)
because it begins on the main road, makes a crescent and comes back to join the main road again.
36. We learn from Paragraph 1 that _____.
A. the government is usually the first to name a place
B. many places tend to have more than one name
C. a ceremony will be held when a place is named
D. people prefer the place names given by the government
37. What does the underlined phrase “die hard” in Paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Change suddenly. B. Change significantly.
C. Disappear mysteriously. D. Disappear very slowly.
38. Which of the following places is named after a person
A. Raffles Place. B. Selector Airbase.
C. Piccadilly Circus. D. Paya Lebar Crescent.
39. Bras Basah Road is named _______.
A. after a person B. after a place C. after an activity D. by its shape
40. What can be inferred from the passage
A. Some place names in Singapore are the same as in Britain.
B. Some places in Singapore are named for military purposes.
C. The way Singaporeans name their places is unique.
D. Young Singaporeans have forgotten the pioneers.

Every year, thousands of young Europeans set off to explore their continent by train in the summer time. It is a
第 6页/共 16页
necessary part of growing up and often the first time many Europeans travel without their parents. Now you too can
share this adventure.
There are so many places you cannot afford to miss while traveling in Europe: the Eiffel Tower of France,
windmills of the Netherlands and the Colosseum of Rome. How do young people afford to visit everything they
want
The answer lies with the Eurail Pass. This ticket allows a traveler unlimited journeys by rail in European
countries which are members of the scheme. Ambitious Chinese travelers can buy the ticket in Beijing, Shanghai
and Guangzhou.
The most popular type of Eurail Pass amongst young people, according to Zhao Jiaji, from China Air Service
Ltd, is the Eurail Selectpasses. With this you can design your own trip by selecting three, four or five neighboring
countries from a total 18 nations including Liechtenstein, Monaco, Hungary and Romania.
“There is plenty of choice with this pass; in total this range offers over 400 different combinations of countries
to choose from!” said Zhao.
The Eurail Selectpass gives 5 to 10 travel days within a 2-month period
For more flexibility there are the Eurail Passes which allow you to take trains in 17 countries on any day you
like. It is valid on a continuous basis for a period of either 15 or 21 days, one, two or three months.
If you just want to travel in one or two countries to learn more about the local culture, Eurail Pass also offers
two-country passes such as Spain-Portugal, France-Switzerland and Belgium-Luxemburg. And countries like
Britain, France and Germany offer a kind of Eurail Pass which allows unlimited train travel in their country.
Before buying the Eurail Pass, you should know some tips to save money. The 2nd class train travel ticket is
cheaper than the 1st class. And youths under 26 years old or groups of 2 or more people traveling together can
enjoy discounts.
41. Why are the three tourist spots introduced in Paragraph 2
A. Because they are expensive places.
B. Because you will have to travel a long distance to visit all.
C. Because they are famous places for sightseeing.
D. Because they are located in different countries.
42. Which of the following is NOT an advantage of Eurail Pass
A. Security. B. Various choices.
第 7页/共 16页
C. Wide coverage. D. All kinds of discounts.
43. With the Eurail Selectpasses, you can _________.
A. stay in Europe for 2 months or even longer B. enjoy a wide range of combinations of countries
C. take trains on any day you like D. focus your trip in one or two countries
44. Which of the following is TRUE
A. Eurail Pass is like a passport.
B. Youths under 26 years old cannot buy 1st class Eurail Pass.
C. In Switzerland you cannot use Eurail Selectpasses.
D. With a kind of Eurail Pass, you can enjoy unlimited train travel in France.
45. Which is the best title of the passage
A. Travel to European Countries B. Designing Your Travel
C. Eurail Pass D. How to Save Money in Your Travel
C
I am a writer. I spend a great deal of my time thinking about the power of language—the way it can evoke(唤
起) an emotion, a visual image, a complex idea, or a simple truth. Language is the tool of my trade. And I use
them all—all the Englishes I grew up with.
Born into a Chinese family that had recently arrived in California, I’ve been giving more thought to the kind
of English my mother speaks. Like others, I have described it to people as “broken” English. But feel embarrassed
to say that. It has always bothered me that I can think of no way to describe it other than “broken”, as if it were
damaged and needed to be fixed, as if it lacked a certain wholeness. I’ve heard other terms used, “limited English,”
for example. But they seem just as bad, as if everything is limited, including people’s perceptions(认识) of the
limited English speaker.
I know this for a fact, because when I was growing up, my mother’s “limited” English limited my perception
of her. I was ashamed of her English. I believed that her English rejected the quality of what she had to say. That is
because she expressed them imperfectly her thoughts were imperfect. And I had plenty of evidence to support me:
the fact that people in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her
good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her.
I started writing fiction in 1985. And for reasons I won’t get into today, I began to write stories using all the
Englishes I grew up with: the English she used with me, which for lack of a better term might be described as
“broken”, and what I imagine to be her translation of her Chinese, her internal(内在的) language, and for that I
第 8页/共 16页
sought to preserve the essence, but neither an English nor a Chinese structure: I wanted to catch what language
ability tests can never show; her intention, her feelings, the rhythms of her speech and the nature of her thoughts.
46. By saying “Language is the tool of my trade”, the author means that ________.
A. she uses English in foreign trade
B. she is fascinated by languages
C. she works as a translator
D. she is a writer by profession
47. The author used to think of her mother’s English as ________.
A. impolite B. amusing
C. imperfect D. practical
48. Which of the following is TRUE according to Paragraph 3
A. Americans do not understand broken English.
B. The author’s mother was not respected sometimes.
C. The author’s mother had positive influence on her
D. Broken English always reflects imperfect thoughts.
49. The author gradually realizes her mother’s English is ________.
A. well structured B. in the old style
C. easy to translate D. rich in meaning
50. What is the passage mainly about
A. The changes of the author’s attitude to her mother’s English.
B. The limitation of the author’s perception of her mother.
C. The author’s misunderstanding of “limited” English.
D. The author’s experiences of using broken English.

I remember the day shyness took over my life. I was 14 and having a French lesson The teacher told us to
record ourselves speaking about a holiday. Perfect! I recorded myself with confidence. Then, I pressed "play" to
listen back. All I heard was a little kid talking. My immediate reaction was to assume I was listening to someone
else's recording. But that was my voice. I realised there was something strange about me.
My little voice has made me feel really shy. And my shyness has caused me to avoid attending events not
make important connections, and keep my ideas to myself. As a shy person, working from home, hiding behind my
computer was brilliant. But the more time I spent hidden away, the more my comfort zone shrank(缩小). Everyday
interactions, like ordering a coffee, became increasingly awkward and uncomfortable.
And then, one day I was at a big conference and it suddenly hit me like lightning. All speakers were confident,
comfortable with being seen. There were no quieter voices. But the trouble is, if the loud voices are the only ones
you hear, we quiet people feel even more alienated(疏远的)。The world needs a mixture of personalities. Success
is not just about who can shout the loudest. The world needs quieter people, too. That day I chose to stop hiding
and embrace my shyness. No more feeling like I needed to change who I am in order to succeed. No more living a
small life.
Then I created the Shy and Mighty Society, a space for shy people like me to shine, and in the process of
helping others, I could also push myself forward, bit by bit. Now, I'm happy to tell people I feel shy. I'm not
ashamed any more. And I know that I’m not alone.
