Deforestation and the EU’s Response
Forests play an important role on Earth. They cover about 31% of the world’s land area and are home to most land animals and plants. However, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, about 420 million hectares (公顷) of forests were lost worldwide between 1990 and 2020. As a major consumer of agricultural products, the European Union (EU) is closely connected to global deforestation — the act of clearing an area of trees.
Causes
Agriculture is the biggest driver in most parts of the world. Turning forests into farmland causes at least 50% of global deforestation.
Urban development, including the building of houses and roads, accounts for a smaller part of forest loss. It represents slightly more than 6% of global deforestation, but in Europe it is the primary cause.
Climate change is both a cause and a result of deforestation. Extreme events damage forests. At the same time, forest loss makes climate problems worse.
The EU’s consumption also affects forests outside Europe and is responsible for about 10% of global deforestation. The chart below shows the main products imported by the EU from deforested land.
Measures
In July 2021, the EU introduced a forestry strategy to improve forest quality and strengthen forests’ role as carbon sinks. In April 2023, the EU approved new rules requiring companies to ensure that products sold on the EU market are not linked to deforestation.
Although the rules were adopted in 2023, their application was delayed to allow businesses time to prepare. A phased timetable was later introduced: large companies are required to comply (遵守) from December 2026, while smaller companies are given additional time until June panies that fail to meet the requirements may face fines of up to 4% of their annual income in the EU.
21. What is the main cause of deforestation in Europe
A. Urban development.
B. Climate change.
C. Agricultural expansion.
D. Forest product expense.
22. What is the percentage of the top three agricultural products imported from deforested land
A. 32. 8%. B. 34%.
C. 66. 8%. D. 74. 3%.
23. Why did the EU put off the application of its new deforestation rules
A. To improve forest quality.
B. To give companies time to adjust.
C. To prevent economic losses.
D. To promote deforestation-free products.

On the last days of July, I moved to a flat in Brixton and joined those with a garden for the first time. Before moving, I lived in a flat surrounded by a small woodland nearby. There were a good six weeks during which the dawn chorus was so loud that waking up at 5 am was a daily routine. Watching the birds became a soap opera I was deeply invested in. In Brixton, though, all I could hear was traffic.
Although I knew clearly that cities are not strongholds of naturalism, and that nature is always there waiting for me to find it, it still took me a while to get used to the fact that I had to walk more than five minutes to find a green space.
It was for this reason that I turned to gardening. I was not a formally trained gardener; I taught myself on a concrete balcony (阳台), four stories up on a hill in Camberwell in my mid-20s. The only garden I had was in my head, and the space I had when I started my career was used for parties, barbecues and playing with the neighbor’s cat.
Filled with blind enthusiasm and curiosity, I picked up plants from supermarkets and flower markets and planted them on my balcony, often killing them out of love and then starting all over again. I often spent whole weekends in that small space. The balcony had a good view: one of London’s shining skylines beneath high skies that changed colour and cloud by the minute. But it was so small that you had to look closely and looking closely is an essential part of enjoying nature, wherever you find it. And to be out on the balcony allowed me to care about things that were bigger than my career, relationship or sense of self. When all three started to waver, it was gardening — and nature more broadly — that enabled me to find a new way of life.
24. Why does the author mention the morning chorus
A. To stress how loud the birds were.
B. To present the joy that nature brought her.
C. To show that she lived near a woodland.
D. To introduce a daily bird-watching routine.
25. What drove the author to take up gardening
A. She wanted to develop a new hobby.
B. She was influenced by other gardeners.
C. She missed nature after moving to Brixton.
D. She received professional training as a gardener.
26. What can we learn from the author’s balcony gardening
A. The balcony is ideal for growing plants.
B. Enthusiasm ensures successful gardening.
C. Gardening is a cure for emotional problems.
D. Small spaces can develop deep connections with nature.
27. What is the author’s attitude towards gardening
A. Enthusiastic. B. Discouraged.
C. Doubtful. D. Indifferent.

Classics are the gems (宝石) of the literary world. For years, people have read them to gain knowledge. But now, an increasing number of people instead enjoy these classics in online video series.
According to a 2023 report by the Chinese short-video platform Douyin, the views for book-related videos jumped by 65.17 percent year-on-year. As people become busier in competitive social environments, the brief literary explanations provided in short videos enable some to experience stories from a fresh perspective in fleeting moments. “I watch them on the subway, in a queue or before bed. Short videos combine text, images and expressions, providing a better experience than just reading text alone,” a man surnamed Zhang told Xinhua.
The fearsome length and complexity (复杂性) of classics are also reasons why some people, especially teenagers, are turning to literature vloggers (video bloggers) for help. A Dream of Red Mansions is well-known for its detailed description of Chinese society, colorful characters and poetic language. It explores themes like family, society and human nature. However, these very qualities make the novel challenging for some students, who find it boring or even sleep-inducing (困倦的) . “There are so many characters in the novel, which confused me a lot,” said 12-year-old ShaoXinyan from Hubei. “Some vloggers use a mind map to clearly show their relationship.”
While reading with videos helps many people, some express different opinions and concerns. For Zhang Boren, a 13-year-old from Beijing, reading is a journey in which people form a personal connection with the text, not just absorbing facts. “Books that inspire my imagination, like fantasy adventures and historical stories, demand a deeper connection. Videos, although convenient, can’t fully present the small details of a well-written story,” said Zhang. Eighteen-year-old Wang Hongjie from Sichuan agreed, saying, “It may decrease readers’ ability to read independently and think deeply.”
28. Why do more people turn to short videos for classic literature
A. Short videos save time and offer vivid experiences.
B. Classic books are often too out-of-date to be popular.
C. They’re lacking in the motivation of reading completely.
D. Video platforms provide more and more book-related content.
29. What makes A Dream of Red Mansions challenging for some students
A. Its unfamiliar themes and brief description. B. Its focus on ancient social culture in China.
C. Its poetic language and various characters. D. Its unique writing features and target readers.
30. What is Zhang Boren’s opinion on enjoying classics via videos
A. Videos contribute more to inspiring imagination. B. Reading books increases readers’ independence.
C. Reading books for readers is only to absorb facts. D. Videos are unlikely to contain all original details.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. “Watch” the Classics B. “Update” the Videos
C. “Approach” Literature D. “Play” with Vloggers
D
We live in an age filled with massive information, in which it seems strange that people often make an effort to avoid learning certain things. Whether it is missing a necessary follow-up medical checkup or choosing not to read upsetting news reports, we have a term for this behavior: the “Ostrich Effect”, just like the animal hiding its head in the sand. Researchers wanted to find out when and why this phenomenon takes place.
In one experiment, kids between the ages of 5 and 10 were asked to picture their most-liked and least-liked sweets. They then faced a choice: Would they be willing to watch a video explaining why eating those sweets was harmful to their teeth Five- and six-year-olds were eager to know the truth — whether the information was good or bad, it was simply interesting to them. Older kids, however, showed hesitation. They were far less willing to learn about the disadvantages of their favorite snacks.
Why do children change from brave learners to intentional information avoiders The answer is connected with emotions. Information is never fully neutral — it often influences how we feel. News related to our health, abilities or beliefs can cause feelings of disappointment, worry or embarrassment. By staying away from certain knowledge, people protect themselves, at least temporarily, from unpleasant emotions.
Avoiding uncomfortable feelings can be protective in the short run, but when avoidance becomes a habit, the disadvantages may be greater than the advantages. On a personal level, refusing to accept important health information may put one’s well-being at risk. On a social level, such avoidance may entrench political divisions (分歧) and fixed opinions. When people purposely ignore opinions that go against their own ideas, they miss chances to grow, understand others and build connections.
At its heart, the Ostrich Effect shows a very human condition. We are naturally curious, but we are also emotionally weak. We want to understand the world, but we are afraid of what understanding may bring. This inner conflict influences our choices every single day. That is why researchers emphasize the importance of teaching children not only to welcome curiosity, but also to build mental resilience (韧性), which help them seize the chance to learn, adjust and achieve success.
32. Which of the following shows the “Ostrich Effect”
A A girl actively asks teachers for advice on studying.
B. A programmer buries himself in daily work and data analysis.
C. A student refuses to take part in outdoor activities.
D. A woman turns a blind eye to her credit card bills.
33. Why does the “Ostrich Effect”occur
A. It helps people stay focused.
B. It keeps us from feeling bad.
C. It makes people think more independently.
D. It improves problem-solving skills.
34. What does the underlined word “entrench” in paragraph 4 mean
A. expose B. remove
C. deepen D. transform
35. What can we infer from the passage
A. Young kids tend to avoid unpleasant information to protect their feelings.
B. The Ostrich Effect does more good than harm to people’s long-term well-being.
C. Building mental resilience helps people fight against the Ostrich Effect.
D. People with fixed opinions never care about others’ opposite ideas.

Why Literature Matters
When we think of literature, we often picture dusty books on library shelves — stories written long ago by authors we’ll never meet. ____36____ It speaks to us across time and space, offering both escape and understanding.
Good literature serves as both a mirror and a window. As a mirror, it reflects our own experiences back to us. ____37____ We recognize ourselves in their struggles and joys, feeling less alone in the world. This connection can be deeply comforting, especially during the confusing years of adolescence.
____38____ It allows us to step into lives completely different from our own. We can walk through the streets of Victorian London with Charles Dickens, feel the weight of racism with Maya Angelou, or experience the challenges of immigrating to a new country with contemporary authors. Through these literary journeys, our capacity for empathy grows.
Reading literature also strengthens our minds in unique ways. Unlike watching a film, where images are provided for us, reading requires us to actively build worlds in our imagination. ____39____ This mental exercise helps develop critical thinking skills that are valuable in every area of life.
In a world of quick clicks, literature invites us to slow down. It asks us to sit with complex ideas and to care about people who exist only on pages. ____40____
A. Perhaps that is why literature truly matters.
B. Literature also builds empathy by acting as a window.
C. Literature, however, is far from dust or distance.
D. This process improves concentration and creativity.
E. We see characters facing dilemmas similar to our own.
F It helps us understand the world through different eyes.

After asking about the cost, Marcus hobbled (跛行) out of the hospital, helpless and hopeless. “How can I afford 3,000 dollars ” he wondered. Upset, he was going to go back to the apartment he rented.
That day it was unusually hot. After traveling for a while, Marcus hobbled across the street as quickly as his injured leg would carry him, and ducked into the shade of a tree growing on the sidewalk. He paused to let his painful leg have a rest and wipe (擦) the sweat from his face before walking again. He looked around, feeling how unlucky he was!
Then Marcus noticed something worrying. A woman sat weakly in a beautiful car parked by the roadside. Her head was thrown back, and her eyes were shut. Her face was sweating terribly. His concern grew when he found she was pregnant (怀孕的).
“Hey!” Marcus tapped on the window. “Are you alright in there, ma’am ” The woman didn’t answer. Marcus looked around and saw nobody else on the street. It was too hot for anyone to be wandering about.
“Ma’am Can you hear me ” Marcus shouted, knocking on the window again, harder this time. Marcus became more anxious as the woman still didn’t answer. If that poor lady had already passed out from the heat, he had to help her and her baby fast.
Marcus circled the car, trying all the doors as he shouted at the lady inside. The car was locked up tight. There was only one thing he could do now to reach the woman: break the window glass.
