Tu Youyou is one of the greatest role models in China. She is a famous scientist who won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2015.
Tu Youyou spent many years researching artemisinin, a medicine that can cure malaria. In the 1960s, many people died from malaria every year. Tu Youyou led a team to look for a way to treat this disease. They studied hundreds of traditional Chinese medicine books and tested over 200 kinds of plants.
It was not easy. They faced many difficulties, but they never gave up. Finally, in 1972, they found artemisinin. This medicine has saved millions of lives around the world.
Tu Youyou said, “I did what I should do as a scientist. I hope more young people will love science and work hard to help others.” She is a great role model for us because she is hard-working, persistent, and always thinks about helping people.
