It’s hard to get out beyond campus if you don’t know where to go or how to get there. Luckily, that’s what your friends are here for! It might be nice to check out one of these places as a reward for all your hard work.
Henry: Public Center
Every Tuesday and Thursday, the Public Center comes alive, packed with locals selling and exchanging some of the best produce and food goods the county has to offer. Prices are nearly always cheaper than buying at grocery stores and often much better quality. You will have fun joining the 118 year tradition of shopping at this place.
Alyssa: The Rochester Museum
The museum specifically does programming tailored to many different groups — while some of the exhibits might seem child-centric, there’s a lot to learn. There’s also an exhibit about the struggle of Black people in different periods that I found specifically striking.
Sunahra: Brighton Farmers Market
From March 5th to April 2nd, the market will be indoors at the Brookside Recreation Center. From April 16th, they will move outdoors to the Brighton High School parking lot. Tons of local farmers sell produce, flowers, and all types of food, which are cheap and great quality.
Sarah: Lamberton Greenhouse
Located in Highland Park, it’s filled with a variety of tropical plants. There are also some animals such as cute small tortoises, fish, and ducks. It’s open every day from 10 a. m. to 4 p. m. and costs $3.

In a study conducted by Fralin Biomedical Research Institute scientists Pearl Chiu and Brooks Casas, they investigate how brain signals involved in reward learning might help personalize treatment for depression. A brain signal that lights up when we anticipate rewards may hold the secret to helping people overcome depression, and Virginia Tech researchers are working to unlock its potential.
Professors Pearl Chiu and Brooks Casas are pioneering a personalized approach to treating depression by exploring how our brains process rewards and setbacks. Their study examines two brain signals—prediction error and expected value—that may predict whether someone with depression is likely to see their symptoms improve.
Major depression affects over 21 million Americans annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and remains a leading cause of disability worldwide. Yet current treatment often falls short, leaving many without lasting relief.
“Major depression isn’t one-size-fits-all,” said Chiu. “People with depression learn and respond to rewards and setbacks differently, often in ways that align with specific symptoms.”
Using computer models, researchers studied how the brain’s reward system works in people with depression, especially those who can’t feel pleasure. By looking at dopamine (多巴胺) responses, they found unique brain patterns that might predict who will recover.
Their responses reveal the brain’s capacity to learn from outcomes, Chiu said, and could form the basis for a new kind of therapy (疗法) using tailored learning processes to guide the brain’s responses to different outcomes.
The study identified two key brain signals—prediction error and expected value—as essential indicators of recovery potential for depression. Expected value, which reflects the brain’s anticipation of rewards and guides decision-making, emerged as a consistent predictor of remission across treatment types. Prediction error, which highlights gaps between expected and actual outcomes to help individuals adjust their behavior, offered additional insights.
Together, prediction error and expected value provided a richer understanding of how unique learning patterns influence mental health outcomes, paving the way for tailored, symptom-specific therapies.
24.What is the main purpose of the study
A.To find the cause of depression.
B.To develop a new drug for depression.
C.To explore personalized treatment for depression.
D.To test the efficiency of current treatment for depression.
25.What is the underlined part “align” in paragraph 4 mean
A.Match. B.Differ. C.Contrast. D.Conflict.
26.What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about
A.The research process. B.The models scientists created.
C.The study method and its result. D.The dopamine found in human cells.
27.What are the signals of prediction error and expected value used for
A.Measuring physical health. B.Predicting recovery from depression.
C.Assessing the severity of depression. D.Identifying the symptoms of depression.

Directly measuring soil carbon rather than relying on predictive models can provide hard evidence of how much carbon is being stored, allowing for better assessments of confidence in carbon markets for croplands, according to a study co-authored by Yale School of the Environment scientists.
The research team found that sampling 10% of fields over large areas and longer periods provides reliable data. By directly measuring soil carbon, the credits sold accurately reflect carbon storage. This ensures buyers’ confidence in real climate benefits and reduces costs as projects increase.
“The study suggests that we can do direct measurement at scale (规模), taking its application beyond carbon markets to other greenhouse gas accounting efforts like those conducted by countries to report their national emissions,” said co-author Mark Bradford, the E. H. Harriman Professor of Soils and Ecosystem Ecology.
To help farmers calculate the cost-benefit of soil management projects, Eric Potash, a research scientist from the Agroecosystem Sustainability Center (ASC) at the University of Illinois, developed an open-source web app that allows users to explore the costs and profitability of soil carbon projects based on specific parameters: project size, duration, analysis costs, and sampling strategy.
“This study suggests that people may be able to reliably quantify how much soil carbon is changing due to adoption of climate-smart agricultural and regenerative practices,” said Bradford. “If you can address the measurement and verification concerns around how soil carbon stocks are actually responding, it will help prioritize policies and investments that achieve soil restoration and protection, leading to improved water and nutrient retention in soils, aeration, and soil biodiversity. Such healthy soils will be more resilient to extreme weather and build food security.”
28.Compared to predictive models, what’s the advantage of directly measuring soil carbon
A.It offers more accurate carbon data. B.It is more cost-effective for small farms.
C.It needs less time to produce the outcome. D.It focuses only on greenhouse gas emissions.
29.What does Mark Bradford think of direct soil carbon measurement
A.It has a broad application. B.It is only for research purposes.
C.It has a limitation on carbon markets. D.It is too costly for widespread adoption.
30.Why was an open-source web app developed
A.To monitor global carbon emissions.
B.To provide farmers with soil health data.
C.To facilitate the trading of carbon credits.
D.To help assess the economics of the soil carbon project.
31.What can be the best title for the text
A.Insights into Carbon Market Regulations
B.The Role of Predictive Models in Agriculture
C.Exploring Soil Carbon in Modern Agriculture
D.Direct Soil Carbon Measurement: a New Frontier

We have featured people who lost weight by following many different methods. Some focused strictly on eating well. 36 Here are some lessons you can learn from those people.
One thing most of our wellness winners had in common was a turning-point moment. For San Boeuf, her journey started when her unhealthy weight was threatening her dream of becoming a mother. She focused on her goal of being healthy enough to have kids. 37
Many of our winners relied on technology to assist them on their weight-loss journeys. There 're numerous apps, devices and online communities. 38 So using all the tools available makes a difference, whether those are apps to log your food, smart devices to track your exercise, or online communities to find the support you need.
Losing a significant amount of weight is a long process. 39 All of the wellness winners experienced struggles along the way but managed to stay or get back on track and maintain their healthy habits. Susan Elizabeth Chaney struggles with an eating disorder after losing a significant amount of weight.
40 Choose a diet you can stick with. In other words, the specific plan matters a lot less than the effort you put into it. Some used intermittent fasting( 间歇性禁食), while others found eating smaller meals throughout the day to be more sustainable.

During my stressful senior year of high school, I often felt overwhelmed. Every day was filled with classes and homework, and my life seemed stuck in a routine. However, in this seemingly monotonous (单调乏味的) life, I met Chen, a friend who helped me rediscover the meaning of friendship and learning.
One day, I was studying in the library as usual when Chen sat next to me. He looked a bit upset. After hesitating for a moment, I decided to break the silence and asked if he needed help. Chen smiled and said he was feeling a lot of pressure from his studies and was struggling with some subjects. I could relate to him because I had experienced similar feelings. So, I started sharing my study methods with him, and he listened attentively.
From then on, Chen often came to study with me. We helped and encouraged each other. I discovered that Chen was actually very smart. He just hadn’t found the right study methods before. Influenced by him, I also began trying new ways of studying, like discussing topics to deepen understanding instead of just memorizing.
Besides studying, we also participated in some extracurricular activities together. Once, the school organized a basketball game. Chen dragged me along to join. Although I didn’t usually play sports, I decided to give it a try with his encouragement. We didn’t win the game, but the feeling of teamwork left a deep impression on me. I began to realize that studying, friendship and teamwork are equally important.
One weekend, Chen invited me to his home for a study session followed by dinner with his family. His parents were very welcoming and supportive, which made me feel at ease. We studied together in his room, and I noticed how he had organized his study materials in a way that made learning more efficient. This inspired me to reorganize my own study space, and it significantly improved my productivity.

66.【答案】Dear Editor,
I’ve observed a recent trend in our class where many students are dedicating excessive hours to perfecting their English handwriting. While neat handwriting is admirable, it’s essential to remember that the core of writing skills lies in content, not the form. Spending such vast amounts of time on mere handwriting overlooks the true essence of learning English: effective communication and comprehension.
I believe it’s crucial for students to strike a balance and our focus should shift from the mere physical representation of words to the richness of their meaning and our ability to convey thoughts effectively.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

67.【答案】We also joined a school club together, which focused on community service. Volunteering at the local nursing home became our weekly routine. Chen’s patience with elderly residents amazed me, while my organizational skills helped streamline activities. These community service activities not only strengthened our friendship but also broadened our horizons and made us more aware of social responsibilities. Through these experiences, we learned the value of giving back to society. Our friendship grew stronger as we shared not only academic pressures but also the joy of helping others.
At the graduation ceremony, Chen looked at me gratefully. “I couldn’t have made it without you,” he said, handing me a handwritten note. It detailed how our study sessions and shared challenges had transformed his high school experience. Tears welled up in my eyes as I realized our friendship had redefined success — not just as grades, but as growth, support, and unforgettable memories.
