Imagine you’re walking across endless hills, with warm sunshine and the sound of birds all around. This peaceful scene is a rare one in the modern world. Our natural soundscapes (声音环境) are falling silent as bird populations reduce.
Our study explores the link between birdsong and people, specifically on English vineyards (葡萄园). We surveyed bird communities on 21 vineyards and our results showed that vineyards with more bird species (物种) had louder and more complex (复杂的) soundscapes.
But does the silencing of our soundscapes matter to us The short answer is yes. There is growing evidence about the health benefits of spending time in nature, including reducing risks of heart disease and anxiety.
So as part of our research, we explored the experience of 186 wine-tour participants (参与者) across three vineyards with different soundscapes. We also improved some vineyard soundscapes with hidden speakers, which played the songs of five additional bird species. This was designed to see how participants’ contact with nature would be affected by increasing the kinds of birds and songs.
The results were fascinating. Visitors who experienced louder and more complex sounds — whether on vineyards with naturally richer soundscapes or on those we had improved — reported enjoying the sounds more. They felt more connected to nature and more satisfied with their tour. With richer soundscapes, they felt more mindful and positive during the tours.
Our study shows the direct effect that birdsong has on our happiness and presents a strong argument for protecting natural soundscapes. So, we hope businesses and people will be inspired to invest (投资) in protection and promote connection with nature.

Most of us were raised to think that smart people always know the right answers. From gold stars in school to performance reviews in the office, we’re rewarded for certainty.
Yet as Bidhan Parmar, professor at the UVA Darden School of Business, argues in his new book, Radical Doubt, “Certainty somehow blinds us. The only thing that spoon-feeding teaches us is the shape of a spoon”. His point is unsettling: The very habits we rely on to feel smart — rushing toward the final goals, simplifying complex problems, sugar-coating our initial reactions — are the ones that keep us from making wise choices.
The hardest problems we face in life, whether in careers, relationships, or society, rarely come with single right answers. They’re what Parmar calls “moments of unease”: multi-criteria choices that involve competing goals, high risks, and deep uncertainty. The old playbook of being a “right-answer getter” not only fails here, but backfires. As Parmar explains, “We often treat complex problems like simple ones until we are faced with the reality.”
Our personal and professional environments are more uncertain than ever. Technology evolves faster than regulation, workplaces are more diverse, and social standards are shifting. I’ve watched firsthand that seasoned leaders ignore warning signs because they were addicted to “feeling right.” They simplified the situation when they should have paused or explored, and missed the opportunity that doubt was pointing them toward.
Our brains run on interconnected systems: the Pursue system (seek rewards), the Protect system (avoid threats), and the Pause-and-Piece-Together system (engage doubt and reframe). Prior evidence-based studies report that most of us let the first two dominate, charging ahead or withdrawing in fear. Grounded in behavioral science, the wiser move is to take enough time to notice complexity, question assumptions, and treat our intuition (直觉) not as the only decision but as an alternative. In practice, this means holding competing goals side by side, and learning to say not “I know,” but “I’m learning.”
28.What is implied by mentioning the spoon-feeding
A.Certainty might ruin decision-making. B.Average people can learn few facts.
C.Smart habits secure positive outcomes. D.Simple tools secretly boost creativity.
29.Which might be a “moment of unease”
A.Profiting from stable investments with spare funds.
B.Trying to find a job overseas when a parent falls ill.
C.Treating difficult problems with one’s first intuition.
D.Continuing to develop in one’s familiar research field.
30.What can make leaders fail according to the author
A.Shifting standards. B.Lacking experience.
C.Ignoring principles. D.Overlooking doubts.
31.What is mainly talked about in the last paragraph
A.Intuition types and brain functions. B.Initial doubts and competing goals.
C.Brain systems and connection forms. D.Scientific theories and workable tips.

For 26-year-old Hungarian student Liu Bao Oscar, the path to studying Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) was deeply personal. Standing in the middle of the busy TCM night market at Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (LNUTCM), he carefully prepared a traditional medicine for digestion, saying excitedly, “This is my first time trying a herbal preparation with my own hands.”
When Liu was young, he suffered from frequent stomach pain and digestive issues, and Western medicine provided little relief. His father, a graduate of LNUTCM, turned to TCM instead. He applied herbal patches (中药贴) to Liu’s belly button, the location of Shenque acupuncture point (神阙穴), a key TCM acupoint (穴位). “To me, it felt like magic,” Liu said. “In just a few months, I was feeling much better.”
Curious about this ancient practice, Liu followed in his father’s footsteps. In 2019, he left Hungary and registered at LNUTCM, determined to understand the science behind TCM. During his studies, Liu discovered the logic behind his childhood treatment. The patches contained warming herbs, ideal for his cold-related digestive issues. The Shenque acupuncture point, close to the digestive organs, allowed the medicine to be absorbed efficiently. “It all made sense once I understood the theory,” he said. “It’s not magic — it’s science.” Inspired, Liu experimented with his treatment. Diagnosed with poor digestion, he adjusted his diet and tried different herbal combinations. Over time, his digestive problems faded.
The night market gave Liu the chance to see TCM in action. He observed traditional Chinese medicine doctors treating patients, hoping to absorb their techniques. “Seeing the theory applied in real life is invaluable,” he said. “It reminds me why I chose this path.”
According to LNUTCM Party Secretary Lyu Xiaodong, TCM isn’t just about treating illness. It’s about “focusing on the whole lifestyle to maintain health and balance.” Lyu said. For Liu, the goal is to bring TCM back to Hungary. “My father studied here before. Now, I am continuing that journey,” Liu said. “The more I learn, the more I want to share this knowledge with the world.”
32.Why did Liu receive TCM treatment when he was young
A.His condition didn’t improve with Western Medicine.
B.His father worked as a famous TCM doctor.
C.He was extremely curious about TCM knowledge.
D.He wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps.
33.What did Liu learn about the Shenque acupuncture point from his studies
A.It was where herbal patches were applied. B.It was a vital acupoint in TCM.
C.Its location helped medicine absorption. D.Warming herbs worked best on it.
34.What did Liu do at the TCM night market
A.He sold digestive herbal patches. B.He treated patients for the first time.
C.He tested the effect of a new digestive drug. D.He watched the application of TCM theory.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Father and Son’s Career in TCM B.A Hungarian’s Journey with TCM
C.A TCM Night Market Experience D.A Great Dream to Spread TCM

While traveling in a group makes a journey fun, it can come with challenges. Unlike solo travel, you’ll probably have less control over the itinerary (旅程) when you travel in a group. 36 No matter who’s in your group, you can have a life-changing journey together. Here are some tips for making group travel as smooth as possible.
37 If you’re in charge of planning the itinerary, avoid arranging too many activities in one day and set aside time for relaxation. For example, one day, you might book an adventurous trip, like hiking to ancient ruins, and plan to relax on the beach the next day. This way, you can avoid stress and keep the group energized.
Keep in contact. Ensure everyone in your group has a way to communicate with each other. 38 You might exchange phone numbers, set up a group text or print a list of contact information.
Embrace new experiences. If someone in your group suggests trying something you never considered before, whether it’s sampling frog porridge in Singapore or riding an all-terrain vehicle (全地形车) in Mexico, be open to the new idea. 39
Be patient. 40 For example, you may have to wait for someone in the morning before setting out or stick around a souvenir shop until a friend finishes browsing. Before you begin your trip, set realistic expectations and get into a flexible mindset. If you can go with the flow during your group trip, you’ll be more likely to have a relaxing experience.
A.Decide on activities.
B.Create a balanced itinerary.
C.Thus, you might discover something new about yourself.
D.Besides, you may be around people with different preferences.
E.It’s OK to skip a group activity if you need some time alone.
F.If someone gets lost or the group splits up, it’s easy to reconnect.
G.Traveling in a group means some activities will take longer than if you did them alone.

On the graduation day, there would be a ceremony (典礼), which was to be held in a large church downtown I’d never visited. I chose a simple, black dress that would fit nicely under my robe (礼服). I even put on a bit of makeup for the occasion and I was getting ready. However, I heard about the stairs that I’d have to manage during my graduation accidentally. I decided that I couldn’t handle the pressure of steps. Walking across the stage was going to be scary enough. Thinking of the stairs I’d have to handle during my graduation, I felt depressed. I wasn’t able to climb the stairs without a ramp (斜坡). So I called Sally in tears and told her that I wasn’t going. Sally was a nice person who always helped me since I came to the university because I suffered a cerebral palsy (脑瘫). Hearing my fears, she knew I needed a good cry.
Sally told me she’d take care of everything. My breathing slowed, and I could feel my body again. At this time, I knew I had to sit quietly and let Sally work her plan, whatever that was. She made me promise that I’d be at the church soon.
An hour later, I arrived at the church and saw the stairs on both sides of the stage. I would walk up from one side, shake everyone’s hand, and then walk down the stairs on the other side to leave the stage. It wasn’t just the stairs I worried about; it was the handshake, too. My cerebral palsy gave me limited control over my right hand.
When I found Sally, she rushed over and hugged me. “I had it all worked out,” she said. “It’s going to be fine.” Now, thinking I would make it through, I felt better. However, when the staff started calling graduates up in order, I began to get nervous. My name was about to be called.

W: Hello, everybody. Thanks for your consistent support for our weekly meeting, New Books Sharing. Today, we’ve invited Dr. Caspar Melville, lecturer from the University of London. Dr. Melville started out as a music journalist for a black music magazine called Blues & Soul. In 1992, he moved to San Francisco and founded a jazz magazine named On the One with some friends. They did a really good job, though there was not a lot of money in it. In 1997, he moved back to London and started teaching, and made the decision to find another way to write about music. He grew up in London. He feels that the music in London clubs has formed him, but unfortunately, it has been seriously undervalued by the academic world. In black music studies, jazz has received great attention, but dance music has been largely ignored. His book It’s a London Thing is meant to change that situation. So, let’s welcome Dr. Melville to share with us his ideas in the book.

67.【答案】Suddenly, I saw a staff member roll out a temporary ramp beside the steps. My throat tightened with gratitude. Sally guided me forward, her voice steady and soft. “I’ll be right beside you.” Sally stepped forward with me—not just as moral support, but physically guiding my steps. I walked step by step, my black dress swaying under the robe. Then, as I reached the stage, the teachers extended their left hands instead of their right hands—a small, deliberate adjustment Sally must have arranged.
I shook their left hands firmly. After the handshake, I slowly made my way down the ramp on the other side, and there stood my friend Sally. I hugged her, feeling an overwhelming wave of support lifting me. The audience’s applause filled the church, and I knew I had overcome a huge hurdle, thanks to Sally.
