The Magical Amazon Rainforest
The Amazon Rainforest is the largest rainforest in the world. It covers an area of about 5.5 million square kilometers in South America. It is home to millions of kinds of plants, animals and insects (昆虫). It is called “the lungs of the Earth” because it produces a lot of oxygen (氧气) for the world.
The rainforest has a warm and wet climate. There is much rain all year round, so the plants grow very fast. Tall trees reach up to 60 meters, and they form a thick canopy (树冠层). Below the canopy, there are many smaller plants, flowers and fruits. These provide food and homes for countless animals, like monkeys, parrots, jaguars and colorful frogs.
The Amazon Rainforest is also important for science. Many plants in the rainforest have special ingredients (成分) that can be used to make medicine. Scientists are still discovering new plants and animals every year. However, the rainforest is in danger now. People cut down too many trees for wood and farmland. This makes many animals lose their homes. Pollution (污染) and illegal hunting (非法捕猎) also threaten the rainforest.
To protect the Amazon Rainforest, governments and people around the world are working together. They set up nature reserves (自然保护区) and tell people the importance of protecting the rainforest. We all should do our part to save this magical place.
