After writing 50 books, Pakistani American kids’ book author Saadia Faruqi is covering an issue she’s never explored before in her newest title, The Strongest Heart.
“This is the first time I’ve written a book that mainly talks about mental illness and the impacts it has on family life, especially on kids,” says Faruqi. “It’s a topic that’s very close to my heart and the theme is personal to me.”
Published in March, The Strongest Heart follows Mo, a Pakistani American eighth grader, as he struggles to understand his Abbu — “father” in Urdu — who has a very serious mental illness. The book is based on Faruqi’s own rocky relationship with her father, who she believes also had this condition.
Growing up in Karachi, Pakistan, Faruqi says she was afraid of her father’s episodes and often felt confused. The adults never “sat me down and explained anything. Nobody said,’ Hey, don’ t be scared.’” She hopes The Strongest Heart, intended for middle schoolers, can offer comfort and strength to young people who live with someone with mental illness at home.
When asked about what she hoped readers would take away from this book, Faruqi said,“I think the title says it all: The Strongest Heart. When things get really bad, somebody tellsMo, ‘The strongest heart is the one that’ s still beating.’ I hope that readers take away a message of courage and resilience (坚持不懈). This book is for anybody who faces hardships, who’s not in control of their own life, who’s scared or worried or anxious.”
So far, the book has earned four starred reviews. Kirkus Reviews writes: “The story is engaging, populated with appealing, well-rounded main and supporting characters. The account of serious mental illness and the complex emotions of a child whose parent suffers from it are realistic, eye-opening and moving.”
4. What makes The Strongest Heart different from Faruqi’s previous books
A. It covers family issues in Pakistan.
B. It talks about her personal life in Urdu.
C. It describes her childhood life in Karachi.
D. It addresses mental illness’s family impact.
5. How might Mo feel about his father’s illness
A. Puzzled and scared.
B. Angry and doubtful.
C. Worried and impatient.
D. Anxious and ashamed.
6. What does Faruqi hope readers learn from The Strongest Heart
A. There is strength even in a struggle.
B. Parents must always appear strong.
C. Mental illness should be kept private.
D. People should take control of their own life.
7. What comment did The Strongest Heart receive
A. Appreciation for its delicate structure.
B. Disapproval of its characterization.
C. Criticism for its complex account.
D. Praise for its emotional realism.

Many industries require that humans and robots share a workspace, but repetitive and boring work can make people lose their focus and make mistakes. Most computer programs help robots react when a mistake happens. Those algorithms (算法) might focus either on improving efficiency or safety, but they haven’t considered a fact that the behavior of the people they’re working with doesn’t remain the same.
“There are a large number of accidents that are happening every day due to carelessness — most of them, unfortunately, from human errors,” said Mehdi Hosseinzadeh, assistant professor in Washington State University’s School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering. “Robots act as planned and follow the rules, but humans don’t always do so.”
A new algorithm may help by making robots more aware of human inattentiveness. In computerized simulations (模拟) of packaging and assembly lines where humans and robots work together, the algorithm developed to account for human carelessness improved safety by about a maximum of 80% and efficiency by about a maximum of 38% compared to existing methods.
“We defined carelessness, and the robot observed the behavior of the human and tried to understand it,” Hosseinzadeh said. “If we know which human is inattentive, we can do something to prevent some potential mistakes. Once the robot identifies careless behavior, it is programmed to change how it interacts with the human acting that way, working to diminish the chance that the person might cause a workplace error or hurt themselves. For instance, the robot might change the way it manages its tasks to avoid getting in the human’s way. The robot continuously updates the carelessness level and any changes that it observes.”
After conducting computerized simulations, the researchers are going to test their work in a laboratory with real robots and people and ultimately in field studies. They also want to quantify and account for other factors that affect workplace productivity, such as human sensibility or danger awareness.
8. What is the disadvantage of most algorithms programmed to robots
A. Ignoring humans’ changing behavior.
B. Allowing robots to respond to mistakes.
C. Focusing on their partners’ repetitive work.
D. Paying little attention to efficiency or safety.
9. Which of the following can replace the word “diminish” underlined in paragraph 4
A. Seize. B. Stabilize.
C. Estimate. D. Reduce.
10. What is the last paragraph mainly about concerning the researchers
A. Their future plans.
B. Their recent achievements.
C. Their expectations of humans.
D. Their computerized simulations.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. Robots Are More Attentive than Humans at Work
B. A New Algorithm May Help to Ensure Robots’ Safety
C. Industries Require Humans and Robots Share a Workspace
D. Robots Are Programmed to Account for Human Carelessness
D
Do you ever find yourself randomly thinking back to the times we wandered, collecting wildflowers and smiling beneath the sky That feeling is often referred to as nostalgia (怀旧).
Psychologists have defined nostalgia as a self-conscious, social emotion, bittersweet but dominantly positive. It comes from our happy memories and our desire to go back to the past and reconnect with the people we cared about. Often, nostalgia involves sensory stimuli. On some occasions, the smell of autumn leaves might generate a fierce longing for your childhood home. Almost everyone can experience nostalgia, although its object tends to vary throughout life. One survey conducted by the psychologist Krystine Irene Batcho found that younger people felt more nostalgia for pets, toys, and holidays than did older people, who felt it more strongly for music.
In contrast to its links to negative emotions, nostalgia doesn’t make us sadder. Rather, nostalgia is a defensive response to unhappiness, one that brings relief from a negative mood. Research from 2006 shows that nostalgia can actually strengthen social ties, improve self-esteem, and uplift our mood. Other studies suggest that it can also enhance our view of life’s meaning, reduce fear of death, boost spirituality, and increase optimism.
Scholars remain uncertain about the precise mechanism behind the effectiveness of nostalgia; however, some suggest that reflecting on joyful memories strengthens our sense of self-worth and belonging, particularly during times of loneliness or self-doubt. Its power lets the happiness of the past overcome the current unpleasantness, offering a bit of escape from tough times. To form stronger connections, we can establish traditions around shared past experiences in families, friend groups, and workplaces. Observing special occasions like childhood sports or post-college meetups can give us something to look forward to.
Perhaps because it is so powerful and complex, nostalgia has received magical treatment from poets and writers. “The past is hidden somewhere outside the realm (领域), beyond the reach of intellect,” Marcel Proust wrote.
12. Why does the author mention “autumn leaves” in the second paragraph
A. To illustrate the complexity of nostalgia.
B. To emphasize the joyful nature of nostalgia.
C. To clarify nostalgia’s connection to our senses.
D. To stress individual variety of experiencing nostalgia.
13. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The mismatch between two findings.
B. The potential benefits of nostalgia.
C. The impact of nostalgia on personal mood.
D. The mechanisms behind nostalgia’s effects.
14. What does the author suggest us do in paragraph 4
A. Create shared traditions for bonding and joy. B. Record the social gatherings regularly.
C. Recognize the unnecessary social gatherings. D. Say no to the concept of escapism.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Nostalgia: Why We Should Avoid Reflecting on the Past
B. Nostalgia: A Shelter Against the Unhappiness of Our Life
C. A Nostalgia Warning: Our Mental Health Being Attacked
D. Power of Nostalgia: Struggling for an Irreplaceable Present

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When my daughters reached third and fourth grades, I sometimes allowed them to walk to and from school alone if the weather permitted. One warm spring day, a small friend followed them home after school. This friend had short legs and long floppy (松垂的) ears, with a furry coat and tiny spots across her nose. She was the cutest puppy I had ever seen and my girls begged me to keep her.
She was not more than twelve weeks old. She had no identifying marks of any sort. I didn’t know what to do. I thought about running an ad in the Lost and Found but I really didn’t want to. It would break the kids’ hearts if someone should show up. Besides, her owners should have watched her more closely, I thought.
By the end of the week she was part of our family. She was very clever and good with the girls. The following week something told me to check the Lost and Found section in the local paper. One particular ad caught my attention and my heart sank. Someone was searching for a lost puppy near our grade school. He sounded desperate. My hands shook. I could not ask myself to pick up the phone.
Instead, I pretended I hadn’t seen the ad. I quickly put the paper aside and tried to ignore it. I never said anything about it to the kids or my husband.
We named the puppy Molly. She followed the girls everywhere they went. When they went outside, she was one step behind them. When they did housework, she was there to help.
There was only one problem with this perfect dog: My conscience (良心) was bothering me. I knew in my heart I had to call that number and see if our Molly was the puppy the person was desperately looking for.
