My magic pen
It is a magic pen that I intend to design for the competition organized by the school. To make it easier and more convenient for students to take notes during every class, I want the pen to be equipped with a special function, which can help me record what the teacher say in class automatically. More importantly, what has been recorded can be easily transformed into text in a short time and the text will be shown within a minute. In this way, the time that we spend in taking notes will be saved. We will be able to have more time to go over our lessons or engage in something else that we are interested in.It sounds so great, right
【答案】Sample1:
The moment the twins came into sight, they were guided to their own bedrooms. The pessimist fixed his gaze on the piles of toys with a frown, murmuring complaints: the game consoles would inevitably overheat, the car batteries would die soon, and the delicate figures would end up broken. Not a glimmer of delight crossed his somber face. Meanwhile, the optimist let out a vigorous cheer at the towering newspaper pile. He found a small crayon beneath it, and exclaimed the paper could be used for drawing and folding planes, his eyes sparkling with excitement. (81 words)
Greatly shocked, the psychologist decided to teach the pessimistic son a valuable lesson. He sat down beside him, gesturing toward his brother’s room and explaining that joy resides not in the gifts we receive, but in the perspective we hold. He urged the boy to recognize the heartfelt care behind each present rather than indulge himself in potential losses. Slowly, the boy hung his head in thought, then reached out and picked up a remote-control car tentatively, a faint, tentative smile tugging at his lips as he strove to embrace a brighter outlook. (80 words)
Sample 2:
The moment the twins came into came into sight, they were guided to their own bedrooms. The pessimistic son threw open his door, only to scowl at the mountain of gifts. “These game consoles will overheat and break in a week,” he muttered, kicking a remote-control car aside. “And the stuffed animals will get dusty!” Meanwhile, his brother bounded into his bare room, eyes lighting up at the messy pile of newspaper. “Wow! Look at all this paper!” He immediately began folding a sheet into a paper airplane, laughing as it glided across the room. “I can make hats, boats, and even a castle!” (88 words)
Greatly shocked, the psychologist decided to teach the pessimistic son a valuable lesson. He took the boy to his brother’s room, where he enjoyed painting with the paper and worn-out crayon. As the pessimistic son watched his brother giggling while coloring the painting, his cheeks flushed with shame. Lowering his head, he whispered, “I didn’t realize how lucky I was.” Back in his bedroom, he picked up a game console and smiled. “Maybe this will be fun, after all.” The psychologist smiled, knowing the lesson had taken root—true happiness lies not in what we have, but in how we see it. Meet the Animals of the Galapagos Islands
Hundreds of years after Charles Darwin’s revolutionary research, the Galapagos Islands, 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, remain a major destination for wildlife viewing and biodiversity conservation. Meet the animals who call these islands home.
Galapagos Giant Tortoise
It is the largest living species of tortoise, with 15 subspecies. The biggest Galapagos Giant Tortoise on record weighed 880 pounds and was over 6 feet long. These reptiles (爬行动物) can live well over 100 years in the wild.
Marine Iguana
The marine iguana, also known as the sea iguana or saltwater iguana, is found only on the Galapagos Islands. They are the only lizards on earth, who spend time in the ocean, hunting for special plants.
Sally Lightfoot Crab
Sally Lightfoot Crabs play a vital role in the Galapagos ecosystem — keeping the shore clean of organics by feeding on them.
Galapagos Green Sea Turtle
The Galapagos green turtle is the only turtle species that breeds and nests in the Galapagos. Seen in the coastal waters, they differ from other turtles due to their V-shaped lower jaw and single pair of scales covering their eyes.

Ghanaian photojournalist Paul Ninson was thrilled and surprised when he came to New York to study photography five years ago, he found valuable images concerning life in Africa in the collection of documents and records of the city’s libraries, galleries and museums. That led to an idea: create a library of photobooks in Ghana to bring the African story home, allowing people to learn about their history and give them the tools to tell new stories of the continent.
“A man does not know his true identity when he does not know his history and the background of where he comes from,” says Ninson. “And for us to solve problems in Africa, education is crucial.”
As he ventured deeper into New York city, he discovered more visual histories of Africa, such as documentation of Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah at the New York Public Library. The museums and libraries Ninson visited were unwilling to give him their documents to return to Africa, which led to his idea to create a library in Africa. This idea has been realized with the creation of the Dikan Center in Accra, Ghana’s capital. Dikan means “take the lead” in the Akan language, primarily spoken in southern Ghana.
This isn’t the only time Ninson set his sights on a seemingly impossible dream. When he initially pursued a career in photography, the challenge felt daunting. Photography isn’t valued as a career path in Ghana, but he felt photography was his calling. He was deeply influenced by the rich family history of storytelling passed down through his grandparents, and later developed a love of photography. It felt natural to combine the two arts, so he dove in. He sold his iPhone, bought a camera and began studying photography, largely teaching himself.
Michael Itkoff, co-founder of Daylight Books, a supporter of Ninson and the Dikan Center, says photobooks offer a different visual experience in today’s world, and they allows for a more slowed down and elegant experience of visuals.
24. What was the purpose of creating the Dikan Center in Ghana
A To take the lead in the Akan language.
B. To promote the career of photography.
C. To give insights into African history.
D. To educate people to tell past stories.

A. Cheering. B. Amusing. C. Discouraging. D. Convincing.
26. What affected Ninson profoundly to take up photography
A. Family Impacts. B. Arts creation.
C. Experience of visuals. D. Force of life.
27. What can you infer from the passage
A. Resource shortage are very common in Africa.
B. Education will soon change the conditions of Ghana.
C. Dream chasers are always paying a heavy price.
D. Learning through photobooks are far-reaching.

A group of farmers in Nigeria is using a technology-based method to grow crops. The method, known as aeroponics (气雾栽培), does not involve soil. Instead, plant roots hang in the air.
Aeroponics is not well-known in Nigeria, but farmers there are working to make the technique more popular. The technique could make a big difference in places like the city of Abeokuta. Violent conflicts and desertification — the process by which rich land becomes desert — have made huge amounts of land unsuitable for farming.
Biochemist Samson Ogbole is popularly known as Nigeria’s smart farmer. He and his team are growing crops without soil at the technology-based farm they started three years ago in Abeokuta. “We are putting an end to seasonal food shortage in Nigeria,” said Ogbole; “Because we are the ones controlling everything that the plant requires — we are not depending on seasons. So it’s no longer seasonal farming. It is just farming anytime of the year, meaning you can plant anytime of the year. We can harvest anytime of the year,” said Ogbole.
But setting up the aeroponic farm was not easy. It required more than $180,000. And some people in Abeokuta were very much against this non-traditional method of farming. “It took a lot of effort to change people’s minds about aeroponics,” said Ogbole.
In Nigeria, about 30 million hectares (公顷) of farmland is being used, instead of the 78.5 million hectares required for food security. Violent conflicts and desertification are the top reasons the farmland is being lost. And only 49 percent of the land is rich. Besides, most farmers do not have the technical knowledge to increase productivity. They are also in need of high-quality seeds to guarantee better harvests.
For now, technologically skilled farmers like Samson Ogbole are offering a new way forward.
28. What is special about aeroponics
A. Crops are not grown in soil. B. Crops can grow all by themselves.
C. Crops without roots can grow well. D. Crops can grow well without water.
29. What does the new method enable farmers to do
A. Reduce the costs of farming. B. Produce crops of higher quality.
C. Grow crops whenever they like. D. Keep crops fresh for a longer period.
30. What do we know about Abeokuta from the passage
A. There is plenty of rich land there. B. Some people there oppose aeroponics.
C. Many farmers there are terribly violent. D. Most farmers there are technologically skilled ones.
31. What is the passage mainly about
A. A new method of growing crops.
B. Ways to turn deserts into rich land.
C. Techniques for developing high-quality seeds.
D. The importance of fighting against worldwide hunger.

Carl Behnke, a food safety expert at Purdue University, had always wondered how clean his reusable water bottle was. After stuffing paper towels inside and pulling them out, he was shocked to see how dirty they became. This inspired him to design a study. Behnke and colleagues stopped passers-by in a corridor at Purdue and asked if they would be happy to loan their water bottles to them as part of their research—to see how clean they were.
“One thing that stood out from the project was the number of people who didn’t want to know the results,” recalls Behnke. “Basically, they knew that their cleaning habits were poor to non-existent—something the data later confirmed.”
Research shows that reusable water bottles can harbor millions of bacteria. A study found that water in bottles used by adults went from about 75,000 bacteria per milliliter in the morning to over 1-2 million by the end of the day. Contamination often comes from the drinker’s hands, mouth, and the outside of the bottle. Those who don’t wash their hands regularly may introduce harmful germs like E. coli into their bottles.
While most bacteria are harmless, they can pose risks, especially for individuals with weakened immune systems. Additionally, drinks that contain sugar can feed bacteria, promoting growth and making the situation worse. Although serious illnesses from reusable bottles are rare, it’s still crucial to maintain good hygiene (卫生).
To reduce bacterial growth, it’s recommended to clean your water bottle regularly. Behnke’s research indicated that participants who used brushes or dishwashers had the lowest bacteria counts. Cleaning should involve hot water and soap, letting the bottle sit for about ten minutes before rinsing (彻底冲洗) thoroughly. It’s essential to let the bottle air-dry to prevent moisture (水分) buildup, which encourages bacteria. And proper handwashing before touching your clean bottle can also help minimize contamination.
32. What can be inferred about the participants according to paragraph 2
A. They actively engaged in the study.
B. They were aware of their poor hygiene.
C. They thought the study was unnecessary.
D. They were confident about the study results.
33. What does the underlined word “Contamination” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Infection.
B. Purification.
C. Destruction.
D. Pollution.
34. What’s a recommended approach to reducing bacteria growth
A. Using brushes with hot soapy water.
B. Wiping with clean dry towels.
C. Rinsing for about ten minutes each time.
D. Washing hands regularly with soap.
35. What can be the best title of the text
A. Are You Using the Right Water Bottle
B. Does Your Water Bottle Make You Sick
C. Are You Cleaning Your Water Bottle Enough
D. Should You Stop Using Reusable Water Bottle

A child psychologist had twin boys: one was an uncontrollable optimist, always finding a bright side in every tough spot, and the other a regular pessimist (悲观者) , who could spot a potential disaster in even the most perfect situations. Curious about how their completely opposite mindsets would shape their reactions to extreme situations, he decided to carry out a playful yet informative experiment on their 10th birthday, eager to observe their genuine responses to different surprises.
For the pessimistic son, he spared no effort to fill his bedroom from floor to ceiling with the coolest, latest video game consoles (主机), fashionable remote-control cars, and neatly arranged shelves lined with limited-edition action figures — literally everything a young kid could ever dream of owning. He even added soft brand-new stuffed animals in the cozy corners, carefully adjusting their positions, hoping to arouse a flicker of pure joy in his son’s usually gloomy eyes. For the optimistic son, however, he took a completely different approach: he merely laid a few pieces of white paper on his plain desk and put a towering, messy pile of newspaper right in the center of his room, with an old crayon under the newspaper.
As he finished all the deliberate preparations, the psychologist couldn’t help but wonder how each boy would react. Would the pessimist remove his doubts and finally let himself enjoy the mountain of gifts Would the optimist’s unshakable positivity hold strong against a room seemingly full of nothing but useless paper He leaned casually against the hallway wall, hands in his pockets, waiting excitedly for the twins to come home from school and discover their unique surprise birthday rooms.
