It was a February afternoon. We were in a classroom. Taylor Angler watched some ducks swimming on a farm. But it was all in her head. A virtual reality headset (虚拟现实头戴式显示设备) took her there. “I was surprised to find that the ducks were right in front of me! It was an exciting experience.” Taylor said after taking off the purple headset and finding herself still in the classroom. And do you know what change does it cause in learning
Taking children to visit different places is a good way to teach them about the world. But what can children do if they forget it after the trip VR lets children go back at any time.
It’s difficult to talk about something if you didn’t see it with your own eyes in the past. If you didn’t see the ocean, with VR, now you can have a look at it for yourself.
VR can also help students in science classes at school. “Too often at school, when you do experiments (实验), you put different kinds of chemicals together and then get the result. And if you aren’t successful, you need to do it again,” a high school teacher said. “But we don’t have enough chemicals. With VR, I just need to do it again on the computer. I don’t have to use chemicals.”
VR is useful, but that’s not to say we don’t need real-world experiences. The real world is what we really need to learn about.

My father is lucky. He falls asleep as soon as his head hits the pillow (枕头). However, my mother is not so lucky. Sleep usually takes longer to come, counting sheep may be the answer. With their eyes closed, people picture a line of white sheep. Then, they count as each sheep jump over a fence.
This method (方法) is as old as time. Some people believe it comes from the Islamic (伊斯兰教的) culture. While others believe it started with shepherds (牧羊人) in old Britain. They couldn’t get to sleep at night because they were worried about all of the sheep in the field. So they would calm themselves by counting the sheep up to make sure they were all safe.
A team of scientists at Oxford University carried out a study on counting sheep. They aimed to see if the method really worked. They put 41 people with sleep problems in three groups. The first group went to sleep in their normal ways. And group two needed to imagine peaceful scenes like waterfalls to help them fall asleep. The last group counted sheep.
The scientists got some interesting results. The people in the second group got to sleep around 20 minutes faster than usual. However, those in the last group took longer than usual to fall asleep. The scientists believed counting sheep made the people feel nervous. As a result, they had more difficulty falling asleep. So, it looks like counting sheep may not be the answer for people with sleep problems.
When falling asleep, it is likely to be more helpful to make the mind filled with something relaxing rather than active. “You have to keep record of those sheep. It takes a lot of work to count them all up.” said Michael Decker, Ph.D, you can try taking a bath to help fall asleep. You can also think about a quiet beach or a walk in the woods.”
Remember next time, no more sheep in your bed.

Zhang Haofeng, a student from Dananpo Primary School in Henan Province, is reading out his new poem (诗) to his classmates. Zhang is a star at his school because he is good at writing poems. Now, people in other places get to know him, too. Zhang owes everything to (归功于) his teachers and his school’s poetry club.
Many students at Zhang’s school were left-behind children (留守儿童). They didn’t have their parents by their side and often had feelings of insecurity. So, they were afraid to share their ideas. Their teachers wanted to help them. In 2019, the school’s head teacher decided to set up a poetry club to teach students how to write poems. He hoped that these students could “speak” out their thoughts through poems. Many teachers welcomed his decision.
In the beginning, these students didn’t know what to write. Their teachers asked them to go out, watch everything carefully, and then write something about what they saw. This was useful. The students’ interest in poetry writing grew, and they got better at writing poems. Now, as they keep watching the world around them, they are becoming more creative and love to share their ideas.

Do you think telling lies, whether a little or a lot, isn’t that big of a deal Well, that depends on the situation. If someone asks, “Does this dress make me look fat ” we might all lie. We might say, “Of course not. You look great.” Lying to spare someone’s feelings is one thing. Lying to destroy(毁坏) someone’s character is another.
“What’s really terrible is that you can’t cancel a big lie,” says a man we’ll call Morgan. “I promise if you go house to house to say, ‘I feel terrible I wrongly charged my neighbor with stealing,’ the lie will spread like a fire. You can’t call back a lie very easily.”
Morgan goes on to say that lies have hurt people more than guns.
“We have a grandfather in our church whose son-in-law told people the man treated his own children badly,” Morgan says. “To this day, we don’t know whether it is true or not. I would doubt it, but I can’t take a chance, especially if he is working with young people in our church.”
“I worked with a man who was stealing money from our boss,” says a man we’ll call Fred. “He was good at lying and doctoring the books (做假账). I worried, ‘If I turned him in, and he got out of the trouble, my career at our company would come to an end.’”
Fred says he came up with a plan to drop hints (暗示) to the company owner. “I found printed materials on the dishonest worker. I started mailing them to the company owner without leaving my name. Then one day, over lunch, I told my boss he should have the books checked carefully. He got the hint.”
Fred told us that when the books were checked, the dishonest worker tried to blame him for the mistakes. However, Fred told the company owner he had been dropping hints for some time. The boss got the picture. Fred kept his job. The dishonest guy was sent away.
How to make a liar(说谎者) public takes work. It can be done, but you might have to give others time to accept the truth. The slower you move, the more control you will have.

Do you know the International Day of Older Persons It is on 1 October and it’s a day to celebrate and show love and care to old people every year.

If you live far from your grandparents, you can give them a call. They miss you a lot so they must be happy about talking with you. Some people don’t like storms, but I think they are very exciting. There are often storms at the end of a hot summer day. The clouds are small and white at first. However, they get bigger and bigger until they make one large black cloud. The sky gets dark and it starts to rain hard. And then the streets are like swimming pools. There is a flash of bright light in the sky and then, after a few seconds, you can hear the loud “bang” of thunder.
Light travels very fast, so we always see the lightning (闪电) before we hear the thunder. If the clouds are one kilometer away, you can count to three, between the lightning and the thunder.
Lightning is very beautiful but it can also be dangerous. Lightning is electricity (电流) “jumping” to the ground from a cloud. It usually hits tall things, so if you are outside when there is thunder and lightning, don’t stand under a tree.
