Challenges to human-bear coexistence in the Elk Valley
Measures taken
Since April 2024, the government has taken effort to help humans and bears share the landscape. One of the most effective tools is electric fencing, which reduces damage to infrastructure (基础设施) by80%-100%. It keeps bears away from attractants like garbage, which reduces conflicts. These simple,low-cost measures are saving lives—— on both sides. As someone puts it,“Coexistence is a two-way street. If we want bears to survive, we have to be willing to change, too.”

I landed my first real job as a deliveryman for the local hardware store. My goal was simple; earn enough money to make a living. Mr. Fred was the manager, running the place with the quiet authority of an old tree—— steady, rooted, and giving people a strong sense of reliability.“You don't just sell a tool; you sell the promise that it' ll get things repaired, and get the job done,” he told me not long after I started. Inodded, pretending to understand, but it would take years for his words to fully sink in.
On my third or fourth day, I dropped a box of light bulbs (灯泡), breaking them all. Before I could even process what had happened, George, the store's experienced and strict repairman, barked from aeross the room:“Clean now!” My face burned as I swept up the mess, convinced I'd just messed up my first real job. Later that afternoon, George handed me a coffee and said,“Everyone drops something. The trick is to learn how to pick it up without making a bigger mess.”
One afternoon, another deliveryman and I delivered a space heater to an old lady who lived alone. Ididn't do much besides carrying the box while he dealt with everything else, but when we were done, the woman grasped my hand, saying,“Thank you, son, You don't know how much this means.” Moments like that stuck with me. They reminded me that the job wasn't just about hardware. It was about showing up when someone needed help and linking up with them.
The experiences brought me so much. Later, I wasn't just the deliveryman anymore. I could ron the counter, troubleshoot with customers, and even help George with complicated repairs. The store became part of me. Even now, when life feels uncertain, I think back to those days. What I learned there is like tools in a firm old box, waiting for the moment I need to put something broken back together.
24. How does Mr. Fred view the hardware store
A. It makes promises of authority. B. It teaches others the repair craft.
C. It builds trust with practical help. D. It sells useful tools to customers.
25. What did George imply about mistakes
A. They' re the learning process. B. They' re tricky but meaningful.
C. They' re the source of the mess. D. They' re unavoidable but fixable.
26. Why does the author mention the old lady
A. To convey his love for the job. B. To show connection in the job.
C. To explain the payoff of the job. D. To prove his respect for the job.
27. What do“tools in a firm old box” refer to in the last paragraph
A. A map guiding the future career. B. A bridge linking more people.
C. Qualities to tackle life challenges. D. Memories of those good old days.

Electric vehicles (EVs) can help cut fuel expenses and lower emissions (排放物) compared to petrol-powered cars. However, their success depends heavily on the availability of convenient charging options. For people living in apartment complexes or urban neighborhoods, it's often inconvenient to find charging stations, which continues to slow wider EV adoption.
To help close this gap, researchers at Penn State designed a framework to develop and assess streetlight- based charging systems. To determine demand, the researchers looked at factors including land use and traffic volume and used the data to train AI models to make demand predictions based on these factors. They also took equity into account to ensure fair distribution of the streetlight charging benefits across diverse neighborhoods in Kansas City. Then the researchers selected 23 streetlights and set up. EVcharging units to test the framework.
Compared to traditional EV charging ports, the researchers found that these stations were much cheaper to set up, and that the streetlight charger s offered significantly faster charging speeds. There were also petrol savings and greenhouse gas reductions by using streetlight charging stations where cars were already parked.
The researchers partnered with various organizations to change existing streetlights to make them function as EV charger s. They established a framework for other communities to apply,“Our team think this framework is important. Creating something that works not just in one specific city is critical for increasing EV use across the country,” said the corresponding author.
Using streetlights for EV charging offers an innovative approach for promoting sustainable electrification. For next steps, the researchers would like to build on their models to include socio- economic factors that will help identify communities with limited EV access or adoption potential, ensuring more effective charging equipment use, and include weather data which is also critical, as extreme bempertalwoos can affect battery performance, travel frequency and overall energy demand.
28. What is the main barrier to wider EV adoption
A. Inconvenience of EVs. B. Laek of charging access.
C. High cost of EV charging. D. Insufficient parking space.
29. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about concerning the streetlight chargers
A. Their basic style. B. Their expenses.
C. Their test process. D. Their advantages.
30. Why do the team think highly of the framework
A. It will raise EV sales. B. It can be widely used.
C. It ensures city support. D. It pioneers EV charging.
31. What will the researchers do next
A. Expand the models' function. B. Test their findings in cities.
C. Boost the green electrification. D. Adapt batteries for bad weather.

In his column, the columnist Anthony Piccione argues just that if we regard the arts subject as important to a child's education as math or science, arts education should be required in schools just as those classes are.
I believe deeply in the significance of arts education, which indeed proved transformative to my ov life. But I have serious misgivings about seeking to demonstrate the value of something by making“compulsory”(必修的), which I believe shows a lack of respect for the autonomy and personal thought our students, and is almost never what tends to convince them of a subject’ s value to their lives.
Participating in the arts requires voluntary personal investment in a way that the study of no oth compulsory academic subject really does. Part of what made theater so valuable to me when I was a teenag was that for once, it was something I was choosing to do because I wanted it. For once, it wasn't somethirI was being forced into or that someone else had decided was for my own good.
I don't see evidence that students need to be required to study the arts or participate in them. Nor aI convinced by the argument that the future of the professional theater is in danger from lack of compulso arts education. How often do we already talk about the large number of theater artists coming out of ar schools or departments
The crisis of arts education simply is not that not enough students are being forced into it. It's th:even when interest of students in low-income communities is strong, underfunded programs, and insufficien school resources prevent them from developing skills or building professional networks. I worry very muc when it seems the only vocabulary we have for how much we value something and want others to value it too, is that it needs to be made“compulsory”. And I worry what we'd be teaching students about the arts we were to approach them that way.
32. How is the topic introduced
A. By quoting an opinion. B. By telling arts stories.
C. By comparing subjects. D. By introducing a writer.
33. What does the author think compulsory arts education harmful to
A. Arts' transformative capacity. B. Arts' need for personal efforts.
C. Students’ natural gift for arts. D. Students' independent thinking.
34. Why does the author cite her teenage experience
A. To demonstrate the popularity of arts. B. To stress the educational value of arts.
C. To show the importance of free choice. D. To prove the positive impact of theater.
35. What is the real crisis in arts education according to the author
A. Lack of access for poor students. B. Undervalued programs in schools.
C. Reliance on a compulsory method. D. Disinterest in arts training and jobs.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The first frost of November painted Mrs. Henderson’s rose bushes silver, but her mood was anything but cheerful. For three days, her morning newspaper Riverdale Gazette had disappeared from its usual spot by the front door. Each morning, she’d glance through her lace curtains at precisely 6:45 a.m., only to find the empty driveway where the newspapers should have been. Her suspicion, like the frost, grew steadily colder and it settled firmly on her new next-door neighbors, the Carters.
The Carters moved in two months ago — a young couple with twin boys. To Mrs. Henderson’s ordered mind, their home was a symphony of cheerful chaos: brightly colored plastic toys spreading across the yard, a tricycle lying on its side by the walkway, and the constant energetic screams of children at play. Newspapers were clearly part of their household mess.
The final straw came on Thursday. Not only was her paper gone, but a beautiful, prize-worthy rose from her front garden bed had been taken clean off. Mrs. Henderson, a champion gardener for twenty years, felt a hot wave of anger. This was no accident: this was damage on purpose! She pictured a small hand reaching through the fence. Enough was enough.
With purpose, she marched next door and rang the bell of the Carters, thinking she should give the boys a lesson.
Mr. Carter answered, looking pleasantly surprised but slightly confused, with a child holding onto each leg and a naughty dog circling his feet. “Mrs, Henderson! What a lovely surprise!” Before she could launch into her prepared speech about community respect and property, her eyes slid past him into the hallway. There, neatly stood on a small table beside an umbrella stand, were three copies of Riverdale Gazette.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Following her eyes, Mr. Carter’s expression turned to understanding and mild embarrassment. Realizing she was wrong about the boys, Mrs, Henderson’s prepared words were gone.

66. 【答案】Dear Linda,
Hope you’re having a wonderful week! I’m excited to tell you about our Smart Farm field trip last Friday.
Upon arrival, the farm workers showed us various cool high-tech devices: sensors that track soil moisture, automatic watering systems, and drones checking the crops from above. The most impressive part was picking fresh strawberries. One bite and you could taste the sweet juice exploding in your mouth. So amazing to see how tech makes farming smarter!
This activity was a great eye-opener. Not only did I gain a deeper understanding of modern farming but also felt the charm of cutting-edge science.

Following her eyes, Mr. Carter’s expression turned to understanding and mild embarrassment. “Oh, dear,” he said, scratching his head. “Those are your newspapers. Our naughty dog keeps picking them up before I can stop him.” It seemed that the naughty dog took it as a praise, wagging its tail and circling happily around them. Mr. Carter bent down, picked up one of the papers and went on, “I meant to return them and apologize. Mornings here are always a bit crazy.” Then Mrs. Henderson even pictured the dog biting off her rose running around.
Realizing she was wrong about the boys, Mrs. Henderson’s prepared words were gone. For a moment, embarrassment rooted her to the spot, with her face burning hot. A wave of guilt washed over her as she looked at the shy boys she had blamed. “I... I thought it was the...” her voice much softer than before. Mrs. Henderson then turned to the twins and invited them to see her garden someday. The boys’ eyes lit up at once. As she walked back home with the papers, it dawned on her that suspicion, like frost, could chill the heart, but kindness had the power to melt it away.
Yours,
Li Hua
