Eileen Gu has emerged as the highest-earning athlete at the Winter Olympics, with reported
earnings of $23 million last year. But for most Winter Olympians, the majority of their income
comes from high-profile sponsorship deals. Just competing can be a financial strain (压 力 ). It's
estimated that it costs around $100,000 a year for athletes to reach the standard to compete at the
Winter Olympics. That includes training, travel and equipment expenses. In some events like figure
skating, the cost can be double that.
Many countries have a funding structure in place. For example, Team GB's Athlete Performance
Award helps with sports and living costs as they work toward Olympic qualification, but only certain
athletes qualify, and some sports receive no funding at all. Jamaica's bobsled (雪橇) team says the
cost of getting to the Games was $700,000, including travel, training, visa fees, ice time and their
sleds.
Some Winter Olympians have launched crowdfunding campaigns. A Canadian cross-country
skier receives no government funding but raised $15,000 to help cover his annual costs. Others work
a job alongside competing. Switzerland's Franz von Allmen, who won three gold medals in Milan in
his first Olympics, was a carpenter before this. The alpine skier also took on seasonal work on
mountain slopes during the summer months to cover his training and competition expenses.
The International Olympic Committee does not pay athletes for winning medals. Countries do
7
offer financial incentives (激励) typically cash bonuses, but they vary significantly. One of the
most generous medal bonuses came from Kazakhstan for figure skater Denis Ten, whose gold was
only his country's second ever. He received a quarter of a million dollars. Team USA medalists earn
significantly less: around $37,000 for gold, $30,000 for silver.
But an exceptional Olympic performance can be life-changing. Skeleton (钢架雪车) athlete
Matt Weston became the first Team GB athlete to win two gold medals at a single Winter Olympics.
Analysts say he could earn $1.3 million through sponsorships and building his personal brand.
51. What kind of expenses are included in the $100,000 annual cost for Winter Olympians
A. Only training fees B. Equipment and ice time
C. Travel and visa fees only D. Training, travel and equipment
52. What do we know about Team GB's Athlete Performance Award
A. It is for all sports and athletes.
B. It is the most generous funding.
C. It covers all Olympians' living costs.
D. It helps qualified athletes with training and living costs.
53. Why did Switzerland's Franz von Allmen work as a carpenter and on mountain slopes
A. He loved those jobs more than skiing.
B. He needed money to support his competition expenses.
C. He couldn't get any sponsorship deals.
D. He wanted to gain experience for skiing.
54. What can we infer from the passage about Winter Olympians' income
A. All athletes can get high sponsorship fees.
B. Medal bonuses from countries are the main income source.
C. Exceptional performance may bring more sponsorship opportunities.
D. The International Olympic Committee provides high medal bonuses.
55. Which of the following is the most suitable title for this passage
A. How to Become a Winter Olympian
B. The Most Successful Winter Olympians
C. Medal Bonuses for Winter Olympians Around the World
D. Winter Olympians: Income, Costs and Financial Support

At the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games, Chinese swimmer Jiang Yuyan (蒋裕燕) won the gold
medal in the women's 50m freestyle S6 final. She set a new Paralympic record with a time of 32.59
seconds, thrilling the whole stadium and moving countless viewers around the world with her
extraordinary perseverance.
Jiang lost her right arm and right leg in a terrible car accident when she was only 8 years old.
Many people thought that she could never live a normal life, let alone become a top athlete, but she
has proven that she is stronger than any difficulty life throws at her. In daily training, she has to
overcome far more challenges than ordinary swimmers. It is much harder for her to keep balance in
water—without a right arm to help with strokes and a right leg to kick, she often drifted off course in
the early days of training, leaving her shoulders sore and legs exhausted.
There were countless tough moments: once, she practiced stroke after stroke for 4 hours straight,
her only remaining arm trembling so badly that she could barely hold a water bottle, and her stump
(残肢) was rubbed raw by the swim cap. But she never gave up—she asked her coach to tie a rope
around her waist to keep her on track, and she practiced breathing techniques hundreds of times a
day until she could swim steadily. She has trained for over 10 years and has become faster, more
confident, and more resilient than ever before.
The final was full of excitement. When the starting whistle blew, Jiang jumped into the pool
quickly, using her left arm and remaining leg to power through the water. In the last 15 meters, she
sped up with all her strength, passing one competitor after another. The crowd cheered loudly as she
touched the wall first. Everyone could see that she had made her dream come true through years of
hard work.
After the race, Jiang said that she was proud of herself for never giving up and that she wanted
to thank her coach and family for their unwavering support. She also believes that nothing is
impossible if you keep trying with all your heart. She hopes that her story can encourage more
disabled people to be brave and chase their dreams bravely.
Jiang has already won many gold medals and broken several world records. As Napoleon
Bonaparte once said, "The man who has made up his mind to win will never say 'Impossible'". This
famous quote perfectly fits Jiang's life and career. She shows the world that the Paralympic spirit is
about courage and persistence. Her story tells us that we should never limit our own ability, no
matter how difficult the situation is.
