Two years ago, my son sat me down for a talk. “Mom, it’s time,” he said. “Hear me out: It’s time we got actual TV. And you need an iPhone.”
This funny conversation two years ago marked a change in our relationship. Perhaps for the first time, I began to really listen to John’s opinion about our home technology. I’d known for a while that my son understands technology better than I do. On airplanes, he grabbed my phone to put it in airplane mode. He wired the speakers in our house. He has a busy social life, with skateboarding, basketball, and online gaming. I see our time together reduced and our shared interests shrinking. That’s why I jumped at the chance when a friend mentioned writing technology reviews. When I presented the idea to my teen, he immediately accepted.
It’s changed our relationship in surprising ways. Where he used to get annoyed quickly at my technical ignorance, he’s learned to be more patient and explain things to me in a way that I can convey to an equally unknowing audience. The Parent-child relationship is not only changed; it’s even slightly reversed (逆转). He’s leading me. I’m asking him for help and advice.
My son has risen to the occasion. He’s taking it seriously, and to watch him mature in this way is an honor. As someone not much of a reader, he now searches instruction booklets. To visitors, Venice is a beautiful picture of historic buildings, waterways, bell towers, red roofs and a large winged lion, the symbol of the city, standing on the buildings across the city. Possibly the most famous lion is a bronze statue (青铜雕像) in the Piazzetta near St. Mark’s Square, and now, researchers think the statue was made in China.
After studying samples (样品) from the lion statue using lead isotope (铅同位素) tests, researchers from northern Italy’s University of Padua found that the bronze used to create the statue came from the Yangtze River in China, according to a study published in the journal Antiquity.
This, they said, would explain why the 4-meter-long and 2.2-meter-high statue had a strange style. People once thought it was made locally, in Syria or Anatolia. According to the researchers, although it was placed near St. Mark’s Square in the 13th century, the lion looks more like Chinese art from the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) than works from medieval Mediterranean Europe. They point to the shape of the lion and marks left by removing its old horns (角).
“It is possible that Marco Polo’s father and uncle, during the four years they spent at the palace of Kublai Khan on their first journey, bought the lion statue,” the researchers said, adding that the visit probably took place between 1264 and 1268.
The animal was actually a zhenmushou — a big, fierce, lion-like tomb guard from the Tang Dynasty. Once the Polos sent the statue back to Italy after their visit to Mongol, it was probably changed to look like the symbol of St. Mark. Workers took off its horns and added a “wig”
“As there is a dearth of written information, why and how the lion was moved to Venice is still unclear. But we can now consider it as a symbol of how connected the medieval world was,” the researchers added.

There’s one thing for certain — we’re all getting older. And while the older among us may be no spring chickens any more, growing old gracefully is no bad thing. And with age comes wisdom. However, as the world population ages, will there be enough people to replace our younger selves
A situation where there are more old people than young certainly has an effect on the world. A report by the Pew Research Center says that globally the number of people over 65 years old will double by 2050, largely changing some countries’ human ecology make-up.
This growing and dependent population means that there is an increased demand for health and social care. Governments will struggle to provide satisfactory pensions (退休金), which are finally funded by taxes paid by the working population. And long-term, a smaller population of economically-active people may be a problem for companies trying to employ manpower.
Attitudes to an ageing population vary around the world. The Pew Research Center research found that 87% of Japanese people were most concerned about it, while only 26% of people from the USA were. Here, immigration (移民局) is helping to promote the younger workforce. Some countries thought the elderly should take care of themselves, while others thought it was the responsibility of the family. Many thought the government should be responsible.
But old age shouldn’t just be seen sadly. Elderly people have knowledge and experience they can pass on. Some have wealth which they can spend, helping the economy. And some help society by doing voluntary or charity work. Of course, solutions are needed to work out the issue, and these include increasing the retirement age, encouraging people to save for the future, aiding skilled and educated migrants to fill labour shortages, or even supporting people to have more children.
