Unit 2 Exploring English
Ⅰ.阅读理解
A(2025·湖北武汉二模)
These days,I have been gathering contributions for Class Notes from my classmates at the Brearley School.Seven contributions have come in.They are long or short, emotional or matter-of-fact,and now my job will be to cut and select, rephrase and quote, and count words from each contributor—our entire collection will have to add up to no more than six hundred and fifty words.
The tough part is trying to give more or less equal space to each of these life accounts, since some of us tend to relate incidents in great detail while others are tight-lipped.If nine of us altogether, including me,contribute notes, then each note is allowed a little over seventy words. If another contribution comes in at the last minute,we all go down to about sixty-five.Do I cut out the trip to Costa Rica,or the visit to the nephew in New Jersey The recent grandchild, broken leg,or Scrabble(拼字游戏) competition
Why did I decide I would not mind being a class-notes agent I suppose I pursue any piece of writing for two main reasons.First,I like the challenge of trying a new form.In this case,my task is to rearrange the writings of a range of personalities to create one fairly smooth whole. The second reason is always emotional. Here, one source of my emotion was the years-long experience of the school itself.I was also touched that my classmates suggested me for the job, their sensible reason being:“You’re a writer.”
As a 65-year-old lady,I feel tired sometimes, but I’ve never stopped valuing every moment in this job.For me,my classmates are still full of youthful energy, passion,or disgust or tearful hurt.I’m not sure I’m naturally gifted at turning all these colorful details into a brief and entertaining account. That’s how I do it — quote their own words as often as I can.
1.What does the author need to do with the contributions
A.Edit and adjust them.
B.Collect and grade them.
C.Ensure the variety of them.
D.Add personal comments to them.
2.How does the author explain the difficulty of the job
A.By citing quotes.
B.By listing examples.
C.By making comparisons.
D.By giving definitions.

D.She is acknowledged by her classmates.

A brief session of exercise before class could be the key to better focus and improved academic performance, according to a study from the University of North Carolina Greensboro.
The research revealed that just nine minutes of high-intensity interval(间歇) training(HIIT) significantly improved children’s scores on a verbal comprehension test.Students who engaged in the quick workout scored higher than those who stayed seated before taking the test.
Professor Eric Drollette, the lead researcher, explained that while many teachers already encourage movement breaks to help students refocus, there was little scientific evidence to back this practice.Previous studies on exercise and brain function were mostly conducted in controlled lab environments and often involved longer sessions, making them impractical for real classrooms.
To address this,Drollette’s team developed a set of simple,equipment-free exercises that could be done in place, such as squats, high knees, jumping jacks, and lunges.Students aged 9 to 12 performed each exercise for 30 seconds, followed by a 30-second rest. All exercises were done at the students’ desks without any special equipment.
The study compared the effects of the HIIT session with other activities like sitting still or moderate cycling.Only the high-intensity workout led to a significant improvement in test scores. On average, students scored 8 points higher on the reading fluency test,a notable gain that showed a clear boost in their academic ability.
This study suggests that short exercise breaks could be an effective strategy for teachers to help students focus before challenging tasks like reading or testing.Teachers can easily incorporate these exercises into their schedules without needing extra space or equipment.
Looking ahead,Drollette’s team plan to investigate how regular exercise might improve students’ mental health and classroom behavior. They hope their future studies will further demonstrate the benefits of physical activity for overall well-being.
5.What does the study find about the HIIT session before taking tests
A.It boosts kids’ scores.
B.It can promote weight loss.
C.It is suitable for all ages.
D.It reveals the effect of rest.
6.How does Drollette’s experiment differ from previous studies
A.It requires longer training.
B.It involves lab-based setups.
C.It gives participants a treat.
D.It is set in a typical classroom.
7.What does the underlined word “incorporate” in paragraph 6 mean
A.Credit. B.Clarify.
C.Include. D.Review.
8.What do Drollette’s team intend to do next
A.Turn to PE teachers for help.
B.Conduct further research.
C.Develop a cure for depression.
