A novel design approach to gardening has been gaining in popularity worldwide.Referred to as matrix planting, this approach aims for nature to do a lot more of the heavy lifting in the garden, and even some of the designing.Eschewing fertilizers(化肥)and power tools,it’s based on an elegantly simple principle:to garden more like nature does.
The concept was born when German city planners sought to plant large areas of parkland after World WarⅡ in a reproducible way that would need minimal maintenance.Planners created planting mixes that could be used modularly(模块化).In a matrix garden, plants with similar cultural needs are grouped so that they will grow together above and below ground, forming a cooperative ecosystem that conserves water and discourages weeds.
Dutch plantsman and designer Piet Oudolf’s gardens popularised this style, adding artistic flavours to the planting mixes while playing with colour and form, including four-season interest and serving the needs of wildlife.Beautiful year-round,they invite you to enjoy the smallest detail, from the sound of grasses in the gentle wind to the sculpture of odd-looking seed heads.
It takes a lot of thought to look this natural. While matrix gardens appear wild, they are carefully planned, with cultural needs the first consideration.Led by the concept of “right plant, right place”,they match plants that enjoy the same soil, sun and weather conditions, and arrange them according to their patterns of growth.
The benefits are substantial for both gardener and planet. With human inputs dramatically reduced, the garden’s ecology can develop well.Established matrix gardens should not need the life support we give most gardens:fertilizer, dividing, regular pared to traditional garden plots, they increase carbon absorption, reduce stormwater runoff and boost habitat and biodiversity significantly.
4.What does the underlined word “Eschewing” in the first paragraph mean
A.Running out of.
B.Keeping away from.
C.Putting up with.
D.Taking advantage of.
5.Why was the idea of matrix planting introduced
A.To control weeds in large gardens.
B.To bring in foreign species of plants.
C.To conserve soil and water resources.
D.To develop low-maintenance parkland.
6.Which of the following best describes Piet Oudolf’s gardens
A.Traditional. B.Odd-looking.
C.Tasteful. D.Well-protected.
7.Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text
A.The future of gardening is WILD

Xena Biffert,a district science consultant, started to do a lot of backward planning when taking students outside to meet curricular(课程的) outcomes. This approach allows curriculum connection and encourages students’ focus and interest to lead the way. Here are four tips for practising backward planning with your students. 8
Know your curriculum.
Many topics arise organically, and you can cover them through mini-lessons along the way.One way to deepen that knowledge is to print it out and make a habit of reviewing it daily. 9 First, you develop a familiarity with it.Second, you can see where you can make that connection naturally where the students’ interests meet.
Begin the year with a learning plan and a mind map.
Having guiding questions has helped Xena form and follow a plan for the year. 10 For example,“How are we all interconnected ” and “What is our story ” She can assess outcomes using this plan throughout the school year.
Get students outside regularly.
11 This culture creates an opportunity to form and answer questions about what happens outdoors and how it connects to other topics. As the emergent learning arises and there is daily reflection on it,knowledge and understanding emerge.Through this intentional work and reflection, teachers will be well equipped to answer questions in the process.
 12
It is important for students to reflect on their observations. We often don’t get time to reflect in our fast-paced classrooms.Often, reflection is combined with assessment. An easy starting point is journaling, because it is a thought process accessible to students in every grade.
A.Outside learning builds a culture.
B.Work out a plan for regular journaling.
C.Make time for student reflection like journaling.
D.Such guiding questions often arise in the backward planning.
E.These may allow you greater flexibility to do outdoor learning.
F.Her reasoning for looking at the curriculum every day is twofold.
G.Xena creates a mind map using the big idea behind the questions.

根据画线词所在句中的“it’s based on an elegantly simple principle:to garden more like nature does”可知,矩阵式种植的原则是以更贴近自然的方式进行园艺活动。
根据第二段第一句“The concept was born when German city planners sought to plant large areas of parkland after World War Ⅱ in a reproducible way that would need minimal maintenance.”
因此,A项“The future of gardening is WILD(园艺的未来是‘野生’的)”最适合作为文章标题。
