In this lesson, you will:
1. understand the meaning and summarize the grammar rules of the modal verbs may/might, can/could and must.
2. practice using "may, can, must" correctly to complete sentences
and dialogues in daily contexts.
3. apply the modal verbs to communicate appropriately in different situations.

情态动词(2)
may / might
当我们想表达可能发生某事以及某人可能做某事时,可以用may / might表示。例如:
Bring a map because you may want to travel around.
带张地图,因为你可能想四处转转。
There may be a few showers, so bring an umbrella with you.
可能会有阵雨,所以随身带把伞吧。
情态动词一般无人称和数的变化,后需接动词原形。
might 与 may 没有太大的区别,形式上 might 是 may 的过去式,但在表示将来的可能情况时,两者都可使用,且might 表示的可能性比 may 表示的可能性要小。
We may/might not visit the city.
情态动词否定式是在动词后面加not。
can / could
can 和 could 表示对现在或将来的推测,意为 “会,可能”。can表示推测时,往往用于否定句和疑问句。could则可用于肯定句、否定句和疑问句。
① Jack could be in pain.
② Can/Could this be true
③ It can't be Dad. He won't be back now.
用于疑问句时,can比could表示的“可能性”要大。
用于否定句时,cannot (can't) 表示“不可能”。
must表示推测
① You must be tired after such a long journey.
② My mother must be watering the flowers in the garden now.
情态动词 must 表示有把握的猜测,意为“一定,准是”,通常只用于肯定句。
经过这么长的路程,你想必累了。
我妈妈现在一定在花园里浇花。
否定形式 must not (mustn't) 表示“不能”或“禁止”的意思,不表示推测。

B: Sounds great! The community must become tidier! And the elderly may feel cared for, too!

Student 1: He finds it a challenge to prepare the English presentation. He may also feel nervous about it. Perhaps we could help him find some material.
Student 2: No problem. And we can also help him practise public speaking.
Student 1: OK, then. I'll let him know. He must feel happy with our help.
Must do:
Choose a dialogue from Exercise 7 and add more sentences using must/may/can.
Choose to do:
Ask your friends "What do you think you might need help with this week " and write their answers using must/may/can.
