There was just one thing I hadn’t counted on: My brother chose to bring his dog Toby, a 50-pound ball of fire. Though friendly, he could easily knock over my niece’s small boys and my six-month-old granddaughter. So, when my brother showed up, I asked him to watch Toby and keep him outside.

Just then I realised that I had zero cash in my wallet. I flashed him an apologetic smile as I pulled out my Portuguese bankcard. He tried it several times, but the card machine just did not play along. A feeling of helplessness washed over me as I saw the bus queue thinning out.
At this moment, Gunter pointed towards the waiting hall of the bus station. There, at the entrance, was a cash machine. I jumped out of the car, made a mad run for the machine, and popped my card in, only to read the message: “Out of order. Sorry. ”

Once in a lecture, the professor tried repeating my name after me over and over in front of thirty classmates. I really did not know whether I should continue correcting him or simply drop the matter. I feared that my classmates might grow tired of my efforts or even lose patience with me. After all, I did care about how others would think of me. I realized that if I didn’t stop, the entire lecture would be ruined. “It’s okay, professor, ” I shrugged(耸肩). The awkward moment ended with the class erupting into laughter. I forced a smile, unsure how to respond further.

Passage 1
Chase watched the countdown on the video screen. There were only twelve minutes left, and his family wasn’t even close to repairing the damaged spaceship before it would crash into the ground. Even worse, while his family was here in the escape room, he was missing his friend Jayden’s birthday party! Why did his family have to take a winter vacation this year
“You used to love things like this!” Chase’s mom patted his shoulder. “Just look at how excited your brother is. ” Chase’s younger brother, Max, was rushing around the room looking for clues. “You know, your dad and I put a lot of thought into this vacation, ” Mom said. “We picked the escape room because we thought you’d like the challenge. ” Chase nodded toward the countdown. “Well, I don’t think there’s any way we’re escaping in eleven minutes. ” Mom pointed to the slogan(标语) printed in block letters over the exit. “Escaping is only half the fun, ” she read out loud. Chase sighed. “The other half is bonding with your lovely family, of course. ” Mom laughed.
“I found something!” cried Max. He was across the room waving a small white card over his head. “It appears to be part of a combination. But we’ll need two more cards to solve it. ” The rest of the family jumped into action, but not Chase. As he collapsed back in his chair, he felt something under his hand. He held it up to the light of the screen.
“Chase found one of the cards!” Max shouted. Chase shrugged(耸肩) and handed it to Dad. For the first time all weekend, Jayden’s birthday party was put to the back of his mind.
“Oh boy, ” Mom said, “Two minutes left and we still need another card!” “We can do this, ” Chase said with a smile. His mind was racing now. He was on a mission, together with his brother and parents. The birthday party might as well have been on another planet. Suddenly the screen went blank. “Time is up, ” Max said, pointing to the countdown. “Mission failed. ”

Chase collapsed in the chair and stared at the blank screen. A heavy sigh escaped him, but surprisingly, he didn’t feel as disappointed as he thought. His brother Max plopped down next to him, saying, “That was so close! Did you see how fast we worked together at the end ” Chase nodded, realizing he’d actually enjoyed the last few minutes of teamwork. Mom and Dad started gathering their things, and Chase noticed the slogan over the exit again: Escaping is only half the fun. Maybe Mom was right about the other half.
“You didn’t ruin anything, ” Mom said, sitting beside him. “We had a great adventure, didn’t we Even if we didn’t escape, we laughed, worked together, and made memories. ” Chase looked at his family—Max was still chatting excitedly, and Dad was pretending to be a spaceship captain to make Max giggle. “You’re right, ” Chase said, smiling. “Jayden’s party would’ve been fun, but this was. . . different. Good different. ” Mom hugged him, and Chase thought maybe winter vacations with his family weren’t so bad after all. The blank screen no longer seemed like a failure but a reminder of a day he’d remember.

Passage 2
Life-Changing Decision
I had been on my own for a couple of years, and life had settled into a comfortable pattern. One night, I sat in front of the TV watching The Dying Rooms, a documentary on the horrific plight of many baby girls in some poor Indian areas.
Those images played in my head for weeks afterward. One morning, my sister called from Israel to chat. I told her about the show and how I felt.
“Go, ” she said. “Go and bring at least one home. ”
“Are you crazy ” I replied.
“You love kids, ” she said.
I turned my sister’s words over in my mind. It was ridiculous, I thought. My life was good, full and very busy. I couldn’t do anything other than send money to some organizations.
But the thoughts and images persisted until I finally picked up the phone and called the government to find out more information.
The first step was to complete a home study. These were done by a specialized social worker who would evaluate if I was suitable to parent. I decided to schedule the home study and then determine afterward whether or not to go through with the process.
During that time, a local Shoppers Drug Mart held a contest. I filled out the ballot and won. The prize was a full box of items to make a home baby safe.
They had another contest. This time, it was for a toddler’s Little Tikes rocking horse. I won that, too. Were these signs
From that moment forward, I began to tell myself, I can do this.
I was still afraid and worried about whether I could manage financially or whether I’d be able to handle the changes in my life.
But, despite these concerns, there was now a strong determination in me to bring a child home and give her a safe, loving environment to grow up in.
My doctor was a big support, and so were many others. To help pay the high cost that was involved, I sold many items around my home that I would never have parted with previously. I asked myself, “What is the life of a child worth ”

Nine months later, I was on a plane to India with my doctor. It was a long flight, and I was grateful for the young businessman sitting next to me. I poured out everything to him: what I was doing, my fears, and also my faith. But when the seven-month-old baby girl was placed in my arms, my heart melted. She was tiny for her age. She cried and threw up. All day long, she twirled her little fingers in front of her face, a sign, I was told, that something was wrong with her.
I asked my doctor if she could cure the baby because I loved her at the first sight. She examined her carefully and smiled, “It’s just a habit from lack of stimulation. She’ll be fine with love. ” The baby stopped crying when I took hold of her fingers softly. That baby is now twenty-three years old. She is healthy, strong and brilliant, and completing her master’s degree on a full scholarship. My life did change dramatically—all for the better. Three years after I adopted Shel, I returned to India to bring another baby home.

Passage
There’s an image of big cities as soulless places, where everyone appears to be looking out only for themselves. However, my own experiences tell a different story. During some of the most challenging times of my life, when I was struggling to find proper housing, I worked as an artist on the street. For years, I played my flute(长笛) there, and in doing so, I discovered the natural kindness of people. They showed compassion without expecting anything in return, driven purely by human goodwill.
This profound realization took hold when I was 21, living in Sydney. I worked at a local pub, feeling lost and directionless. Amid the chaos of my life, playing the flute was my only constant source of comfort. Looking back, my connection with the flute began when I was 16. Earning a mere $2. 35 an hour at the supermarket, I saved for two long years to buy it. Every day after work, playing the flute became my way of processing the day’s emotions.
One day, while working at the pub, someone asked me what I was doing that night. “I’m going to be playing the flute at—” I started to say, but then it struck me: I had forgotten to pick up my flute when I got off the train. Panic set in immediately. In a fit of frustration, I threw the plastic chair I was holding across the room.
I rushed to the train station, hoping someone had handed in my flute. No luck. Still, I left my number, clinging to the slim hope that it would turn up. Convinced that it was gone forever—after all, I hadn’t even written my name on the case—I spent the next week drowning in self-blame, drinking heavily and feeling sorry for myself.
Then, out of the blue, I received a call from CityRail. They had my flute. I hurried to the lost property office at Central Station. And there it was, among all the other lost items.

As I went to grab it, the guards there asked for my ID. I froze in my tracks, a wave of panic washing over me. I stammered, telling them I didn’t have any ID on me, and that getting it would be a huge hassle. Despair filled my eyes as I pleaded with them, explaining how precious this flute was to me. It wasn’t just an instrument; it was my connection to a better time, a source of comfort in my otherwise chaotic life. But the guards said, “Well, sorry—you’ve got to have ID to get your flute back. ” I stared at the flute, so close yet so out of reach, and held back the tears of frustration that threatened to spill.
Desperate and anxious, I said, “What if I play you a tune ” The guards hesitated, but then nodded. I closed my eyes and started playing Greensleeves. As the first notes filled the air, a rush of emotions surged through me. I could feel the guards’ attention on me, and for a moment, the world around us seemed to stand still. When I opened my eyes, I saw that the guards’ expressions had softened. “That’s your flute, ” one of them said softly. Without hesitation, I grabbed my flute and walked away, my heart swelling with gratitude. It was a double kindness—first from the person who handed my flute in, and then the guards who broke the rules to let me take it. This experience only reaffirmed my belief in the goodness of people, even in the bustling heart of a big city.
