Passage 1
(2025·广东模拟)
In the winter of 1998, five-year-old Emily was sent to live with Mr and Mrs Fisher, who had no children, in the Scottish Highlands because her parents were busy with their business. Mrs Fisher was very kind to Emily. She would make hair bows and sew dolls for her. Mr Fisher also loved Emily very much. He saved money by eating less and bought new clothes for her.
One night, Emily had a high fever. Her foster parents(养父母) took turns carrying her for miles through the mud to get medical help. They fell repeatedly and got injured but protected Emily well. When they reached the clinic at dawn, the doctor treated her, and she recovered quickly.
When Emily was nine, she wanted a tape recorder like her classmates. She knew her foster family wasn’t rich, so she didn’t ask her foster parents for that. But Mr Fisher noticed she wanted to have one very much, and he went to work at a coal mine despite his lung disease. He worked nine hours every day and bought her a new recorder with his hard-earned money. Emily was moved to tears.
Although the family was poor, Emily lived a joyful life, surrounded by Mr and Mrs Fisher’s devoted care. However, when Emily was 11, her birth parents found them based on the address they’d always kept to take her back. As Emily left, she cried hard, holding a doll made by her foster mother. Even worse, on the way back, her birth parents accidentally lost the note with her foster parents’ address. This made it almost impossible for Emily and her parents to visit her foster parents again.
In the following twelve years, Emily and her parents tried hard to find them. During college, she visited the Scottish Highlands three times, but each trip ended with disappointment and tears. After graduating, Emily worked in the big city, Edinburgh. She became more determined to find her foster parents. In the winter of 2016, she posted her story online for help.

A kind netizen offered her foster parents’ exact address based on her account. Arriving at the village that evening, Emily was moved to tears by the familiar sight. Her heart raced as she knocked on the wooden door. An elderly woman opened it slowly, holding a half-finished doll. “Mum. . . ” Emily said softly. For a moment, Mrs Fisher looked puzzled, and then her eyes lit up. Behind her stood Mr Fisher. His rough hands gently touched Emily’s cheek. With tears in her eyes, Emily realized they’d never stopped waiting for her.
Emily moved her elderly foster parents into Edinburgh to care for them. Every morning, Emily made breakfast while Mrs Fisher made dolls for kids nearby. Neighbors often brought them sweet cookies, smiling at the reunited family. At night, they listened to old songs on the tape recorder, its red cloth now old. Emily invited doctors to check the Fishers often, and Emily felt lucky. In her room hangs a photo: young Emily with a hair bow, held by her smiling foster parents. Home, as she always knows, is where love lives.

Passage 2
I was walking my dog when a friend pulled up and rolled down her car window. “Oh, my God!” she said. “I’ve wanted to do that for ages! You are so brave!”
It was the first time Elyse had seen me since I let my hair go gray.
I’d been thinking about taking the risk for a couple of years. I was sick of coloring my hair and sick of the waste of time and money.
I was also weary of colluding with(沆瀣一气) a culture that saw a sixty-year-old man’s silver-gray crown as “distinguished” but expected women of the same age to have hair that was impossibly golden or brilliantly brunette. I was fed up with the cultural expectation that I look younger than my age.
About twelve weeks passed between the day I stopped coloring my hair and the day I left the salon. During those awkward months when the top of my head looked like a vanilla cupcake with chocolate frosting, I felt like a walking Rorschach test. What did my friends see in this new design
Many women, some good friends and some barely acquaintances, decided that my decision was sufficiently universal that they had to share their thoughts and feelings with me. They voiced many concerns: What would my kids think Would my husband like it When I look in the mirror, would I see my mother Or worse, my grandmother
What happens when one ignores cultural norms I was struck by how many women ended their conversations about my hair with “It’s so great that you’re doing this. Good luck!” They vicariously wished to live the dream but also recognized that, for the granny who suits up to cross sky diving off her bucket list, a little luck couldn’t hurt. Like the canary in the coal mine, they collectively waited to see if I would survive.

Most of them, like Elyse, applauded my courage. They admired me for my having traveled somewhere they were still too timid to go. Still, I was struck by the number of women who ended the conversation by reminding me, “You can always color it again if you don’t like it. ” It was a sisterly gesture of unconditional acceptance should my silly experiment turn out to be a bust. Even my older friends who color their hair admit that they’ve been thinking about going gray for years, but feel they just aren’t ready. Ready for what
I think the most honest answer to this question is: not ready to look old. This is particularly true of my women friends who work in corporate settings. They have earned their high-level positions through years of study and hard work. Still, they are afraid that to look their age would somehow affect them. However, as time passes, I am increasingly comfortable with my decision. Being gray suits the way I live the rest of my life. Simple. Quiet.

Passage
(2025·湖北模拟)
Over twenty years ago, Virginia Squier was guiding a group of middle school students on a trip to England. She brought along her 8-year-old daughter Sarah.
One evening, near the end of the visit, Squier, her daughter and the school group were on a platform in the London Underground getting ready to head to their next destination. It was 5 p. m. and the station was packed. Squier took hold of Sarah’s hand and began counting her students. Just then, a train pulled up to the platform.
“Suddenly, my daughter let go of my hand, jumped on the train, and the doors began to close, ” Virginia recalled. “As the train gathered speed, I ran alongside trying to force the door open by digging my fingers into the black rubber seal. Through the window, I could see my daughter’s panicked face. ”
The last thing she saw before the train pulled out of the station was her daughter crying and pounding her small fists against the glass. Behind her, a young man dressed in black leather with a spiked(有尖刺的) collar stood up and moved toward her. Virginia’s heart raced—his rough appearance matched every warning she’d ever heard about “dangerous” strangers. His black leather jacket with sharp-looking decorations, messy hair, even the way he walked—everything about him screamed “trouble”. She imagined the worst—what if he was a thief What if he took Sarah somewhere she couldn’t find her
Terrified, Virginia searched for help but struggled to explain the emergency to a station worker who didn’t speak English well. “My daughter—the train!” she cried, but he didn’t understand. She tried speaking slowly, then louder, even gesturing wildly, but the language barrier made her panic grow. Each failed attempt left her more desperate as the train disappeared into the tunnel. The young man on the train had witnessed what had happened and immediately stepped in to help.

He bent down and gently wiped Sarah’s tears with his sleeve. “Shhh, it’s okay, little one, ” he murmured in a voice much softer than his tough appearance suggested. His large hands moved with unexpected tenderness as he carefully wiped Sarah’s tear-streaked cheeks. When she continued to sob, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a slightly crumpled candy. “Here, ” he said with a small smile that crinkled the corners of his eyes, “this always helps me feel better. ” Keeping a protective arm around her, he guided Sarah off at the next stop, using his broad shoulders to protect her from the jostling crowd as they waited for the returning train.
As Virginia hugged Sarah tightly, the young man disappeared into the crowd. With her arms trembling, Virginia clutched Sarah to her chest—her relief was so overwhelming that she barely noticed the young man slipping away. “Wait!” she called out, but her voice was lost in the station noise. Looking down at Sarah’s calm face, Virginia felt a wave of shame. That dangerous-looking stranger, the one she’d judged instantly by his rough appearance, had shown more kindness than anyone else today. Wiping her tears, Virginia made a silent promise to herself: never again would she let appearances cloud her judgment so completely.
