I met Gunter on a cold, wet and unforgettable evening in September.
It suddenly dawned on me that we should always have faith in kindness, and every time I think of that cold, wet evening, a warm current still flows through my body.

The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day.
Father was standing in the doorway, recording this touching scene. The whole room was bathed in a happy Mother’s Day atmosphere.

One day I got word that he was admitted to hospital for a serious disease. I thought I should visit him in any case. He was a little surprised to see me when I stepped into his ward. I offered to do the rest work of our project and he invited me to share my ideas to perfect it. Our hard work paid off and Dr. Henderson was satisfied with our wonderful findings. From this project, we learned the significance of teammates. Just as the saying goes, one person can go fast, but a group of persons can go far.
1. Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you’ll never, ever have enough.
2. The best way to defeat your fear is to face your fear head-on.
3. Never underestimate yourself, for you have no idea what you are capable of.
4. Just as the famous saying goes, sunshine always comes after the rain. We will meet various challenges in life, but we should never give up easily.

Through this interaction, I realized that by embracing my cultural identity, I was not only preserving my heritage but also enriching the lives of those around me. It was a small yet meaningful step towards fostering cultural understanding and appreciation.

The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up. The instant she noticed the breakfast was brought in bed, a ripple of excitement flashed through her face. Her eyes wandered between the breakfast and the twins as if she was asking what happened. “Happy Mother’s Day!” the twins exclaimed with one voice. The mother’s face beamed and her shining smile lit up the room. “Thank you, my angels! Come here and give me a hug. ” The twins rushed into their mother’s arms and just at that moment, their father stepped behind them. “Hey!Look here!” “Click-click. ” Using the camera, the father recorded the memorable scene.

Passage 1
The Do-It-Yourself Disaster
“Time for the demonstration and we’ll vote for the entries for the Science Fair. Who wants to show your project first ” Mrs Williams asked. For this project, we were allowed to do anything, as long as we did it ourselves. I buried my head in my sweater, just like my turtle buried his head in his shell to avoid notice.
The first volunteer was Ava. Unlike me, Ava just loved talking in front of people. She skipped to the front and showed us how to wire potatoes to produce electricity. It was cool, and I told her so when she passed my desk. My buddy Jayce got called on next. He demonstrated the Unpoppable Bubble. It was really good. I gave him a thumbs-up. “You did it, ” I mouthed.
“Michael, please. ” Michael. That was me. I guessed I forgot to keep my head buried. I walked to the front on shaking legs and set my birdhouse on the table. I swallowed the baseball-sized lump in my throat and started. “This is how to build a birdhouse. I looked online for plans and went to the woodyard with my dad, since I’m not old enough to drive. ” My classmates laughed and I could tell they appreciated my humor. Having gained some confidence, I went on with my words. “Someone there cut four pieces for the walls, and made the hole. ”
Luka’s hand shot up. “So what did you do ” he asked. I swallowed. The lump in my throat was now the size of a basketball. “I came up with the idea and I figured out how to hinge(加铰链) the roof so I can clean out the house after the birds leave. ” I lifted the roof to show everyone. Some kids stood up to see.
“Then I nailed all the walls together. ” I picked up the heavy hammer(锤子) borrowed from my dad: I had left one of the nails sticking out a little so I could demonstrate. As I gave the nail a mighty blow, the hammer came down on the roof instead of the nail. Smash!

The roof caved in and the birdhouse fell apart. I stood there, rooted to the spot, my face flushing hot with embarrassment. I was sure that I was the laughingstock of the class. However, Ava quickly came to my rescue. “Look at this interesting roof structure!” she said, picking up a piece. Jayce chimed in, “Yeah, and those side panels are so well-designed. ” Encouraged by their kind words, I began to talk about the features I’d planned, like the special entrance size for small birds and the sloped roof to prevent rainwater buildup. The class listened intently, and I gradually regained my confidence.
As the thunderous applause faded, Mrs Williams announced the start of the voting. My heart was in my mouth. When she finally revealed that my project had won, I couldn’t believe my ears. “Michael’s project, ” Mrs Williams said, “reminds us that science is about creativity and the willingness to learn from failures. His courage to share, even after the setback, is what makes this project special. ” The whole class cheered for me. I sat down, feeling a sense of pride well up inside me, understanding that sometimes, unexpected turns can lead to the sweetest victories.

Passage 2
I’d been considering the idea for weeks. But it wouldn’t work, would it Actually, I used to do similar things all the time. But with four small children, how could I make it happen I knew it would fail, and that it would be awful.
So, I tabled the idea, and as summer drew to a close, I prepared my two oldest to go to first and third grade. With twin babies at home, I was not very involved at school, only appearing for conferences and performances.
That’s why the idea felt so preposterous(荒谬的). A book club for moms at school I didn’t know any moms at school. A few friends from other fields whose children happened to attend the same school. But I could count them on one hand, and most of them had other obligations during the day. Where would I even start Who would ever want to come A book club for moms at school had “no way” written all over it.
In my former life, running a book club would have been a piece of cake. I’d probably have made a delicious cake and offered it to the book club. It would be perfect—candles lit, soft music playing, and well-prepared discussion questions. A thoughtful haven for my friends to discuss deep thoughts.
In my current life, a book club meant letting strangers see my messy house. Things wouldn’t be perfect. There would be store-bought snacks and no candles because of safety problems. There would be Mickey Mouse Clubhouse in the background. There would be distractions.
But the idea would not go away. Before I could think better of it, I grabbed all the class rosters from past school years and started texting down the lists.
“I’m starting a book club for school moms. . . ”SEND.
“. . . In my house, just a few miles from school. Are you interested ” SEND.
I invited everyone on the rosters.
Then, my phone started to buzz.
“Sure! I’d love to come this Wednesday!”
“YES! That sounds awesome!”
“Absolutely! What can I bring ”

The first Wednesday arrived. I welcomed about a dozen strangers into my far-from-perfect home. As we sat down with our coffee, it was as if something subtly shifted. No longer were we just fellow school moms. Suddenly, we felt safe discussing everything. We laughed and cried as if we had known each other for a lifetime, when in reality it had been less than a half-hour for most of us. Something was happening here. . . something I didn’t expect. . . something beautiful. Something real.
As the months went on, we saw some of our book club ladies through tough times. Marriage issues. Job changes. A broken engagement. Infertility. Cancer diagnosis and treatment. Through it all, we were there for each other, offering words, meals, prayers, and encouragement. We were a group of former strangers turned supporters—no, sisters. Setting up the book club was a small, risky idea. But when I gave in, it changed my life. Because it was never supposed to be about books. It was about living unafraid and perfectly imperfect. . . together.

Passage
The lights shone above shelves that were lined with canned food. I took my place in line. Same routine, different week. The woman ahead of me coughed into her sleeve; the man behind shifted his weight from foot to foot. We all avoided eye contact, waiting in silence.
The groceries quieted my empty stomach but increased the ache I felt in my chest. Unemployment aid stopped three months ago. The red-inked warnings for rent popped up like mushrooms after rain. Watching a volunteer drying sweat off her face, I was happy that the staff at the food bank(食物救济站) were too busy to ask questions. Just show identity and take your bags of dignity.
But that Tuesday, something changed. A new volunteer came early twenties, wearing a coffee shop staff T-shirt. While others rushed, he arranged boxes of cookies like library books. His name tag read JOHN in capital letters. “Odd, ” I thought. “Who takes pride in sorting these ”
My turn to check out. “Mrs Thompson ” His voice held unexpected warmth, as if he had known me for years rather than seconds. “How has your week been ” The question caught me while I was reaching for my bags. No one here used names. My throat tightened. “Getting by, ” I said, my voice barely above a whisper. Then, to my amazement, I could not help adding that the bills were eating my savings alive as I had been unemployed for three months.
John’s eyes softened, and he moved closer. “That’s tough, ” he said, his voice steady. “Is there anything I can do to help ” I froze, caught off guard by his sincerity. My first reaction was to ignore it—I didn’t want to be a burden—so I forced a small smile and told him I would be fine. Before he could say more, I grabbed my heavy bags and hurried out.

I was struggling forward when someone called my name. I turned to see John dashing towards me, panting heavily. “Mrs Thompson, ” he huffed and puffed, handing me a note, “here’s my coffee shop address and manager’s number. ” He added that the coffee shop was hiring cleaners and suggested that I might want to try. With a tired but sincere smile, he jogged back toward the food bank. Gripping the note, I felt its weight surpass even my heavy bags. Unemployment, along with the mounting rent and bill pressures resulting from it seemed to vanish instantly. Nightfall found my hands shaking as I called the manager. To my surprise, the manager responded immediately, scheduling an interview for the next day.
The next day, I came to the coffee shop for the interview. There stood John at the counter, arranging packaged coffees like library books. Spotting me, his eyes lit up with warmth. “Mrs Thompson, so glad you’re here!” he said softly, his steady voice wrapping around me like a cozy blanket, calming my interview nerves instantly. The interview process went smoothly—I started working the same day. Working with John provided me with more opportunities to observe how he took pride in his work, which deepened my determination not to be a burden on society but a contributor to this vibrant space. My encounter with John proved something greater: the unyielding force of compassion can light up the world like never before.
