I decided to go to Edinburgh to visit my friend Annabelle who was studying at the University of Edinburgh.
I really didn’t know what to expect. I had heard that it was a fun place, but when I arrived I had no idea how beautiful the city was! We went downtown to Princes Street and it was absolutely exceptional. I loved the old cobbled streets and the castle that sits up on the hill in the middle of
the city. There are a few original eighteenth-century buildings there too. At one end of the street there are the sunken gardens, where you can relax or have a picnic.
Honestly, I just can’t figure out how people manage to get things done, with lots of great restaurants and little hang-outs right near the university. One place I really loved was this
downstairs restaurant called Central. It’s a really modern style place with massive brown leather couches where you can just relax and catch up with friends and study.
One of the highlights of my trip was getting to see a rugby match at the Murrayfield
Stadium, I watched Scotland upset South Africa! Scotland was the underdog, but somehow they managed to win in their home town. It was a bit cold at the stadium, but there were tons of

excitement and energy and it was enough to keep us warm.
Drinking and the pub life is a huge part of the culture in Edinburgh. They have great pubs, where you can have a beer, coffee or food. Some of my favorites were the Bow Bar, which is all
made of wood and won a prize as the best Drinker’s Pub in Britain a few years ago, and Greyfriars Bobby, which has lots of students and is great for meeting people. I didn’t get to try the mutton,
but I thought I would save it for next time

During my college years in Bangalore, India, some time in the early 80s, my pleasure was found at the movies on Saturday. One weekend, my friend Sumi and I set our sights on the Rex Theatre on crowded Bridge Road, and we went there by an autorickshaw (机动三轮车).
That afternoon, the traffic on Brigade Road was heavy. We got off at the theatre, and I
stepped onto the road. And then, in one strange moment, I fell. Anyway, there I was: lying out across the curb (马路牙子), foot injured, and pain spreading quickly, in a big way, crying out to be noticed.
People gathered around as ifI were some street theatre. Sumi hurried off in search of
another rickshaw. But after being refused many times, she soon abandoned her efforts. We sat there alone, among a sea of strangers me in pain, Sumi feeling powerless.
Then, unexpectedly, a young man stepped out. He asked whether I needed to go to a
试卷第 5 页,共 13 页
hospital. I shook my head. He disappeared for a few seconds and returned, having stopped a passing auto. He helped me in and disappeared back into the crowd.
Months passed. My foot was fully recovered. One evening, I was at the Lido Theatre on
MG Road. And then, out of nowhere, he was there again He walked right up to me and asked how my foot was. “I was on a bus,” he said. “Saw you standing here... thought I’d come over and
check how you were doing.” I smiled and told him that I was doing a lot better. With a nod and a smile, he said “take care”, and left.
Not once did it cross my mind to ask his name, or where he was going, or why he chose to stop. All I managed was a simple “thank you”. And yet, his kindness shone brightly long after the pain had disappeared. There was no expectation or exchange —just a person on a busy street who chose instead to stop, notice, and care. Also, it was not just that he helped, but that he
remembered.

C.Hard work will pay off in the long run. D.Kindness from strangers can be unforgettable.
Think back to the last time you wrote down a quick note or made a grocery list. Chances are that it wasn’t with pen and paper. Over the past decade, keyboards and screens have quietly replaced handwriting in our daily routines, from classrooms to office meetings. Yet, research
shows that putting pen to paper offers cognitive(认知) benefits that digital tools can’t match.
“Statistically most studies on the relationship between handwriting and memory show that people are better at remembering things that they have written down than on a computer,” says
试卷第 6 页,共 13 页
Naomi Susan Baron, a professor of linguistics at American University in Washington D. C. From improved memory retention(保留) to enhanced learning outcomes, here’s how maintaining the art of handwriting can significantly impact how we absorb and keep information.
The benefits of writing by hand can partly owe to the engagement of multiple senses in the writing process. “Holding a pen with our fingers, pressing it on a surface, and moving our hands to create letters and words is a complex thinking and movement skill that requires a lot of our
attention,” says Mellissa Prunty from Brunel University, who has researched the relationship between handwriting and learning.
“This deeper level of processing, which involves mapping sounds to letter formations, has been shown to support reading and spelling in children,” Prunty continues. The physical act of
writing helps strengthen memory and improve learning outcomes, making it an important tool for educational growth.
Adults also benefit from the labor-intensive(劳动密集型) nature of handwriting. A study
involving 42 adults learning Arabie found that participants who learned letters by writing them
down by hand were quicker to recognize them, had an easier time naming them, and were better at sounding the newly learned letters out compared with people who were asked to learn the new
characters by typing or by just looking at them.
“We think that our results can be partly explained by how handwriting activates different
pathways to the same concept,” says Robert Wiley, a professor of psychology at the University of North Carolina Greensboro and co-author of the study. “Handwriting can activate more
connections across these different aspects compared with typing,” he says.
12 .Why is handwriting better for remembering things compared to typing
A .Handwriting is more visually appealing.
B .Handwriting is more fun and enjoyable.
C .Typing is too fast and makes it hard to concentrate.
D .Handwriting engages many senses and requires more attention.
13 .What’s a good thing about handwriting for kids according to Mellissa Prunty
A .It helps them to focus better. B .It makes learning more entertaining.
C .It improves their fine movement skills. D .It supports reading and spelling.
14 .What’s the main finding of the study involving 42 adults learning Arabic
试卷第 7 页,共 13 页
A .Adults preferred typing to handwriting.
B .Handwriting helped adults to learn Arabic faster.
C .Typing new characters was the best way to learn.
D .Handwriting did not improve memory retention.
15 .What would be the best title for the text
A .The Benefits of Handwriting.
B .The Decline of Handwriting.
C .How to Improve Memory through Handwriting.
D .The Difference Between Handwriting and Typing.

playground in the evenings. She decided to find out what was going on. “Hello, Tom,” she greeted him with a big smile on her face. “What are you doing here on your own at this hour ”
“Hello, Mrs. Peterson,” Tom replied. “I’m cleaning the playground because it’s dirty. The other kids litter everywhere, but they never clean it.” “Oh, how awful!” Mrs. Peterson exclaimed (喊道). “I’ll make sure they don’t do that again, Tom,” she added gently. “You are not supposed to clean up after them. It’s late, so you should go home.”
“I can’t go home until I finish cleaning, Mrs. Peterson,” Tom said slowly, his head bent and his eyes fixed on the ground. “I want to help the cleaner because I feel bad for him. My mom also works as a cleaner and she comes back late from work. I want to spend time with my mom,but she says she has to work more hours to provide for us,” Tom continued. “That’s why I feel sorry for
the cleaner who cleans our playground ...His children must be waiting for him just like I wait for my mom.”
Tom’s words left Mrs. Peterson teary-eyed. She somehow hid her tears in front of him, but deep down, the little boy’s act had moved her. “Do you realize how special and amazing you are, Tom Your mother raised you very well,” she said, praising him.
