Several years ago, Dawn Larkin-Wallace, a mom of three, started running to lose 10 pounds to 20 pounds of baby weight that just wouldn’t go away. She thought once she dropped the
weight, she’d be off the treadmill (跑步机). What she could have never imagined is that she’d become a marathon runner who inspired her three children to start running, too.
“We’re just a running family,” said Larkin-Wallace of Baldwin, New York, who is part of a running club. First, Larkin-Wallace signed up her 15-year-old daughter Kayla, a high school
student, for a race after realizing that the amount of running she did during her soccer games was the equivalent (等量) of five kilometers.
With the positive pressure and the competitive spirit that exists in the household,
Larkin-Wallace said with a laugh, “Of course, her brother and sister decided that that’s something they wanted to do, too.” Kimberly, 11, and Kevin Jr., 9, ran their first 5K’s this year.
Larkin-Wallace said her goal is for healthy living to become a lifestyle among her kids, who also play a range of sports from basketball to soccer. What she’s also very mindful of is encouraging her children, especially her girls, to feel good about their bodies. A recent study found that two in three 13-year-olds worry about gaining weight.
“It’s always on my mind, and I have to help my daughters understand that their body type is disparate from others and that the difference doesn’t make one better or more right than the other,” she said during a conversation with her family in their home. “As long as we’re healthy and taking care of ourselves, we should accept ourselves.”
The best advice for teenagers, Larkin-Wallace said, is to focus less on appearance and more on health, internal (内在的) qualities and things that your body can do, rather than how your body appears.

The Stanford marshmallow (棉花糖) test was originally conducted by psychologist Walter Mischel in the late 1960s. Children aged four to six at a nursery school were placed in a room. A single sugary treat, selected by the child, was placed on a table. Each child was told if they waited for 15 minutes before eating the treat, they would be given a second treat. Then they were left
alone in the room. Follow-up studies with the children later in life showed a connection between an ability to wait long enough to obtain a second treat and various forms of success.
As adults we face a version of the marshmallow test every day. We’re not tempted (诱惑) by sugary treats, but by our computers, phones, and tablets — all the devices that connect us to the global delivery system for various types of information that do to us what marshmallows do to
preschoolers.
We are tempted by sugary treats because our ancestors lived in a calorie-poor world, and
our brains developed a response mechanism to these treats that reflected their value — a feeling of reward and satisfaction. But as we’ve reshaped the world around us, dramatically reducing the
cost and effort involved in obtaining calories, we still have the same brains we had thousands of years ago, and this mismatch is at the heart of why so many of us struggle to resist tempting foods that we know we shouldn’t eat.
A similar process is at work in our response to information. Our formative environment as a

species was information-poor, so our brains developed a mechanism that prized new information. But global connectivity has greatly changed our information environment. We are now ceaselessly bombarded (轰炸) with new information. Therefore, just as we need to be more thoughtful about our caloric consumption, we also need to be more thoughtful about our information consumption, resisting the temptation of the mental “junk food” in order to manage our time most effectively.
8 .What did the children need to do to get a second treat in Mischel’s test
A .Take an examination alone. B .Show respect for the researchers.
C .Share their treats with others. D .Delay eating for fifteen minutes.
9 .According to paragraph 3, there is a mismatch between .
A.the calorie-poor world and our good appetitesB.the shortage of sugar and our nutritional needs
C.the rich food supply and our unchanged brains D.the tempting foods and our efforts to keep fit
10 .What does the author suggest readers do
A .Absorb new information readily. B .Be selective information consumers.
C .Use diverse information sources. D .Protect the information environment.
11 .Which of the following is the best title for the text
A .Eat Less, Read More B .The Bitter Truth about Early Humans
C .The Later, the Better D .The Marshmallow Test for Grownups

ChatGPT and other generative AI tools have sparked concerns about replacing various
workers. Writers, editors, and customer service representatives are among the people that could be affected. But some people are suggesting that AI might not reduce jobs as many people fear.
Instead, the technology might turn out to be more like the technological developments ofthe past, such as the steam engine, electricity or the Internet.
Nick Bunker, an economist at the Indeed Hiring Lab, believes AI will impact many jobs to some extent but also create new ones. AI gives machines the ability to perform tasks once thought to require human intelligence. The basic technology has existed in early versions for many years. Some reports say it began with a problem-solving computer program called Logic Theorist. The program was developed in the 1950s at what is now Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh,

Pennsylvania. More recent examples include voice assistants like Apple’s Siri, Amazon’s Alexa, or IBM’s chess-playing computer, Deep Blue, which defeated then-world champion Garry
Kasparov in 1997.
Sam Altman is chief of OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. He believes a lot of current jobs are at risk because of AI, and this is going to change the way that a lot of current jobs function. Suumit Shah, whose company, Dukaan, helps customers set up e-commerce sites to sell goods online, said the average amount of time it took to answer a customer’s question shrank from 1
minute 44 seconds to “instant” . The chatbot also cut the time needed to resolve problems from more than two hours to just over three minutes.
Of course, the researchers also found that those who used the chatbot were 14 percent more productive than workers who did not use the chatbot. The workers who used AI took more calls
and completed them faster. Alorica is a company in Irvine, Califomnia, which runs
customer-service centers around the world. The company has introduced an AI translation tool
that lets its representatives communicate with customers who speak any of 200 different languages and 75 dialects.
12 .Why are Siri, Alexa and Deep Blue mentioned in Paragraph 2
A .To offer a proof. B .To make a prediction.
C .To present a fact. D .To explain a rule.
13 .What can we learn about AI according to Sam Altman
A .It helps the progress of technology. B .It causes economic losses.
C .It brings a threat to some kinds of jobs. D .It performs tasks reserved for humans.
14 .What does the last paragraph tell us
A .AI has a lasting impact on humans. B .AI helps improve people’s efficiency.
C .AI may reduce jobs as many people fear. D .AI frees humans from tough work.
15 .What is the central argument of the passage regarding the impact of AI on employment
A .AI will lead to widespread unemployment across all industries.
B .AI will only affect certain sectors like customer service and writing.
C .AI will transform existing jobs and create new opportunities, similar to past technological revolutions.
D .AI is less effective than traditional methods and will not have a significant impact.

On March 20, 2026, China witnesses a rare mix of astronomical (天文的) time and cultural tradition. The Spring Equinox coincides with the Dragon Head Raising Festival. According to
experts, this will not happen again 36 the year of 2045.
The Spring Equinox (春分) is one of China’s twenty-four solar 37 (term). On the Spring Equinox, the sun shines directly on the equator, so day and night are almost equal in length around the world. It also divides the whole spring into two equal parts. That is 38 ancient Chinese called it “the middle of spring.” As old records say, yin and yang reach balance, bringing

When I was in high school, I discovered power not in my voice, but in my hands.
It began in the autumn when my father decided to move to a coastal town beaten by salt
winds. My father had taken a job at the lighthouse, guiding ships through the fog. My mother,
however, refused. “My job is here,” she argued. “I won’t give up everything for a place at the edge of the sea.” My father’s reply was firm, “And I won’t refuse the work that keeps ships safe.”
Their words crashed like waves against stone. For weeks, they circled the same
arguments—her future in the city, his duty to the coast. Finally, there was no agreement. My father packed his bag. I followed him to the shore. My mother stayed behind.
The separation saddened me. At school, I felt like a stranger, watching classmates share
stories about soccer victories and bakery secrets I could never share. At night, I heard my father’s footsteps pacing, the silence between us heavier than words. I wanted my mom to be with us, but I knew she had her job.
Then, one November morning, the art teacher brought in boxes of clay. “Today,” she said, “we shape what you want.” The room was filled with the whispers ofthe students. While others discussed their ideas, I pressed the clay slowly and deliberately, as ifit carried a secret. My first creation was not a vase but a lonely bird with half-formed wings. Something about its brokenness felt true. The teacher praised my work, which lit a fire inside my heart.
From that day on, the art room became my shelter. I spent afternoons molding (塑造) clay into figures — birds reaching upward. Each piece was like a page of a diary written without ink. Yet even as my hands spoke, my heart longed for my mother. No sculpture could fill the empty chair at our table. I wanted a whole family.

Pay attention to photographs, charts, and other graphics that might appear in your textbook. If you’re not studying a book, try to pull up a mental image ofwhat it is you are trying
Expanding further upon this idea is the fact that educators have found that by
having students teach new concepts to others, it helps to enhance understanding and recall. Teach new concepts and information to a friend or study partner, and you’ll find you remember the

not...until... 故填until / before。
“be of +抽象名词”相当于该名词对应的形容词,be of great importance 意为“非常重要的” 。故填 of。
故填 while/and。
not only...but (also)... 故填 but。
故填 will grow / grows。

So one afternoon, I decided to make something new for my mother. My hands trembled

outward, and a girl in between holding them both. The figures were simple, yet their closeness told the story my tongue could not. With every curve and line, I poured in my longing and my hope that distance could be bridged not by words but by love turned solid in my hands.
When it was finished, I packed the sculpture in a box and sent it to her. To my surprise,
weeks later, on a windy afternoon, my mother returned with her suitcase — her smile trembling, yet her arms open to hold us. “I’m so sorry!” Father said apologetically. “There is no need to
apologize. We’re a family and we’ll never be apart from now on,” Mother said. We three hugged each other happily. That night, we placed the clay family on the table, and I understood what my heart had been shaping all along: True power lay not in my voice, but in my hands—the power to bring my family together again.
