My average screen time is eight hours and 44 minutes per day — more time than I spend sleeping. This makes me fit into the category of being “chronically online”, defined as someone whose entire life revolves around the internet.
So I decided to change my lifestyle and use a dumbphone. Apart from making calls and taking photos, I couldn’t use the flip phone’s features unless I was connected to Wi-Fi.
The first two days of my grand experiment started on a weekend. My anxiety kicked in
immediately. I assumed I was missing out on an event. As a result, I started calling my friends and family just to make sure that I wasn’t.
I asked Lindsay Bira, a clinical health psychologist based in Florida, why my decision to downgrade initially made me more anxious.
“Being alone or disconnected from what’s going on can be read by the deep brain as a
survival threat when it really isn’t a threat,” Bira said. “It is important to learn how to tolerate the feeling of being disconnected or left out until our brain understands that it is not a problem, which allows us to self-regulate without reaching for the phone, and we develop a deeper, healthier
connection to ourselves.”
I started calling friends to hang out, rediscovering the lost art of phone conversations. It reduces miscommunication compared to texting and makes me a better listener, helping me feel more connected.
“If someone is always on their phone, they are training loved ones to lean away from them emotionally” Bira said. She emphasized the importance of eye contact, attention, and proper
feedback to make people feel truly cared for.
After the week was over, I had broken the habit of mindlessly unlocking my iPhone and opening countless apps for fresh news and information. Instead, I turned to different outlets for news at work, rather than simply scrolling through social media posts.
4 .Why did the author switch to a dumbphone
A .To reduce phone usage. B .To break internet addiction.
C .To follow a trendy lifestyle. D .To improve mental health.
5 .What does Lindsay Bira advise us to do when feeling disconnected
A .Remove threats to our survival. B .Distract ourselves with technology.
C .Accept the feeling until our brain adjusts. D .Avoid situations that can cause anxiety.

6 .According to Lindsay Bira, how could a person’s frequent phone usage potentially affect their loved ones
A .Create emotional distance. B .Train them to be better listeners.
C .Make them prioritize phone conversations. D .Encourage a greater reliance on technology.
7 .Which of the following might be the most suitable title for the text
A .Reconnecting with nature and the self B .Unplugging for a tech-free lifestyle
C.Creating space for family relationships D.Disconnecting for inner peace and connection
C
Online shopping offers tremendous convenience but also an overwhelming number of
options. To navigate these choices, many of us rely on online reviews and ratings, believing they provide reliable information about products. But is this trust justified
Bart de Langhe, a behavioral scientist and marketing professor at ESADE in Barcelona, Spain, faced this question when shopping for a car seat for his newborn son. Confronted with a choice between a $300 car seat from a well-known brand and a $50 car seat from an unknown brand, he turned to online reviews. The positive reviews for the $300 car seat convinced him to buy it. Later, he discovered that Consumer Reports rated the $50 car seat higher in crash
protection and ease of use than the $300 one.
Curious, de Langhe teamed up with colleagues at the University of Colorado in Boulder to compare online reviews with performance reviews. They did this for 1,272 products in 120
categories — including car seats, bike helmets, blood pressure monitors, headphones, sunscreen
and smoke alarms — which could be objectively assessed. Their study, published in the Journal of Consumer Research, found a very weak link between positive online reviews and actual product
performance.
As de Langhe explained in Science Daily, “The likelihood that an item with a higher user rating performs objectively better than an item with a lower user rating is only 57 percent. A
correspondence of 50 percent would be random, so user ratings provide very little insight about objective product performance.” He further elaborated in a TEDxESADE Talk that many
high-rated products perform poorly and vice versa. This discrepancy is partly due to fake reviews and the influence of brand reputation, packaging and price on user opinions. Only a small group of
试卷第 7 页,共 15 页
consumers — the ones holding the most extreme positive and negative opinions — tend to leave reviews. This is why we often see a lot of 1-and 5-star reviews on products.
De Langhe recommends relying less on the recommendations of other consumers. This
doesn’t mean we should stop reading reviews altogether, but we should avoid stressing over minor rating differences and feel less compelled to read every review before making a purchase.
8 .What motivated de Langhe to research the reliability of online reviews
A .His interest in marketing techniques.
B .His skepticism about certain famous brands.
C .His shopping for a car seat for his son.
D .His cooperation with Consumer Reports.
9 .What did the study by de Langhe and his colleagues reveal about online reviews
A .They were objective enough.
B .They barely reflected product quality.
C .They mostly featured neutral opinions.
D .They were heavily influenced by companies.
10 .What does the underlined word “discrepancy” in paragraph 4 most probably mean
A .Inaccuracy. B .Preference.
C .Trend. D .Difference.
11 .What advice does de Langhe offer regarding the use of online reviews
A .Identifying their source.
B .Paying less attention to ratings.
C .Focusing on detailed reviews.
D .Avoiding reading them entirely.

Carbon removal is crucial for fighting climate change. Scientists at Salk Institute are
making use of the natural capacity of plants to absorb carbon dioxide by enhancing their root systems. This optimization (优化) aims to increase the amount of carbon stored and extend the duration of its storage.
To design these climate-saving plants, the scientists are using a research tool called SLEAP
试卷第 8 页,共 15 页
— an AI software that tracks multiple features of root growth. Created by Salk Fellow Talmo Pereira, SLEAP was initially designed to track animal movement in the lab. Now, Pereira has teamed up with plant scientist Professor Wolfgang Busch to apply SLEAP to plants.
In a study published in Plant Phenomics, Busch and Pereira establish a new procedure for using SLEAP to analyze plant root phenotypes — how deep and wide they grow, how massive
their root systems become, and other physical qualities. Prior to SLEAP, tracking the physical
characteristics of both plants and animals required a lot of labor that slowed the scientific process. SLEAP uses computer vision (the ability for computers to understand images) and deep learning (an AI approach for training a computer to learn and work like the human brain) to help
researchers process images much more quickly.
The application of SLEAP to plants has already enabled researchers to establish the most
extensive catalog (目录) of plant root phenotypes to date. What’s more, tracking these physical
root system characteristics helps scientists find genes (基因) associated with those characteristics, as well as whether multiple root characteristics are determined by the same genes or
independently. This allows the Salk team to determine what genes are most beneficial to their plant designs.
“Our cooperation is truly proof of what makes Salk science so special and impactful,” says Pereira. “We’re not just ‘borrowing’ from different disciplines — we’re really putting them on
equal footing in order to create something greater than the sum ofits parts.”
12 .What do the scientists at Salk Institute hope to achieve
A .Keeping more carbon in plants. B .Optimizing the use of energy.
C .Enhancing biological diversity. D .Reducing carbon absorption.
13 .Why did Pereira create SLEAP
A .To generate plant images. B .To conduct research on animals.
C .To study climate patterns. D .To track features of root growth.
14 .What will SLEAP help the scientists do
A .Pick out diseased plants in the forest. B .Collect samples of plant root systems.
C .Identify genes for desirable plant roots. D .Preserve the genes of endangered plants.
15 .What can be inferred from Pereira’s words
A .Academic disciplines are of equal importance.

B .Computer programming is a must for scientists.
C .Interdisciplinary approach promotes creativity.
D .Cooperation outweighs competition in research.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
The whole world changes around them: actors, singers, models. athletes and TV
personalities. If I go through Instagram, Snapchat or any social media news feed (新闻推送). I get too familiar with their lives.
16 What I can’t see is what their big contribution to the world is other than entertainment.
By idolizing (崇拜) the entertainment industry so much, we sometimes completely forget about the things that are truly important and that are changing our world.
Imagine if the money that every Hollywood actor and director makes went into medical research and pharmaceuticals. It would be so much easier for scientists to diagnose (诊断)
diseases and unknown viruses. So ifit would benefit the world so much to invest all of our time and attention toward scientists, why don’t we do it 17
First of all, we like being entertained. Most people might not praise scientists because it’s
not something entertainment. People will care more about Brad Pitt’s upcoming new movie, rather than NASA’s most current space exploration that might change the way we live our lives.
18 It’s because we simply like being entertained. It’s easier to care about simple things rather than scientific, complicated ones.
Another reason is that most scientists don’t like being in the spotlight. There are studies that have identified the personality features of people most likely to become scientists. 19 Even if we gave them that much attention, they wouldn’t be so excited to be followed by paparazzi (狗仔) all day or get invited to events every weekend. They’re busy people, which explains why they haven’t attracted the media the same way that performers have.
Therefore, it’s very unlikely that scientists will ever become the “celebrities (名人)” of modern days. Even in the middle of a pandemic (疫情) science is still not as popular as
试卷第 10 页,共 15 页
entertainment. 20 Studies have shown that young people are more interested in a scientific career as a result ofCOVID-19. Maybe that’s the start of the development of a different point of view against science for future generations.
A .That’s not because we’re careless human beings.
B .They’re mostly reserved, quiet and like to have privacy.
C .Scientists seem to be selfless, hard-working and devoted people
D .I have nothing against the entertainment industry and celebrities.
E .However, interest in science has definitely risen since the pandemic began.
F .It seems as if entertainment has become the most important thing that the world cares about.
G .Why don’t we make scientists our new “celebrities,” if they are the ones that deserve it the most

A study 36 (conduct) by leading behavioral scientists shows that nearly 70% of
communication happens nonverbally. Understanding human body language is essential because
not everyone possesses a perfect poker face at all times. Even when individuals try their hardest to remain polite, their true internal feelings often leak out through subtle facial signals, 37 (imply) that they might be feeling irritated or overwhelmed.
One common red flag is the frequent and sudden use of mobile phones. In today’s
always-connected culture, looking down at a digital screen provides a socially acceptable escape. However, such behavior often signals deep boredom or annoyance. If someone is 38

using smartphones during meetings to ensure that everyone focuses entirely on 41 social interaction occurring at that moment.
Physical movements also provide vital clues. Many people tend to shift in their seats or take heavy 42 (breath) when annoyed. These actions are attempts to reset the nervous system and regain calmness. By making a careful 43 (compare) between a person’s normal
behavior and these sudden physical shifts, you can easily detect discomfort. Learning to interpret these signals correctly helps build better communication and avoid misunderstandings.
These behaviors often indicate a hidden conflict. The conversation, 44 which
someone’s sudden sighing is a direct response, usually ends awkwardly if the signs are ignored. Ultimately, ____45____ matters most is our ability to read the room and respect others’ personal boundaries.

George Ellet had a bright silver dollar for a New-year gift. He thought of all the fine things he might buy with it. The ground was thickly covered with snow but the sun shone out bright, and everything looked beautiful and peaceful. So George put on his hat, and ran into the street. As he went skipping along, he met some boys throwing snowballs. George soon engaged in the sport. He sent a ball at James Mason, but it missed him, and accidentally broke a window on the other side of the street. George feared some one would come out of the house and find him. So he ran off as fast as he could.
As soon as he got round the next corner, George stopped, because he was very sorry for
what he had done. He said to himself, “I have no right to spend my silver dollar, now. I ought to go back, and pay for the glass I broke with my snowball.” He pulled out the silver dollar from the pocket, watching it glint in the sunlight as his thumb traced its edge. He went up and down the
street, and felt very sad. He wished very much to buy something nice. He also wished to pay for the broken glass.
At last he made up his mind, “It was wrong to break the window, though I did not mean to do it. Even if the man yells at me, telling the truth will let me sleep tonight. I will go and pay for it, if it takes all my money, I will try not to be sorry.”
George started off, and felt much happier for having made up his mind to do what was
right. He walked straight to the house with the broken window and stood in front of the door, his little hand clenching the silver dollar tightly in his pocket. He hesitated for a second, with his hand resting on the doorbell, thinking about what he would say to the man inside, would the owner be
angry and shout at the careless boy who broke his window

47 . He rang the doorbell and waited nervously, his heart beating quickly. Soon an elderly man opened the door and looked at him in surprise. With his head lowered, George admitted his
mistake honestly and held out his silver dollar to pay for the broken window. He explained that he had accidentally hit the window with a snowball and felt truly sorry for his carelessness. Moved
by the little boy’s courage and sincerity, the man refused to take his money. Instead, he praised George for being honest and responsible, saying it was far more precious than the silver dollar.
When George went home at dinner time, his face was as rosy as usual. He told his parents
the whole story about the broken window and what he had done. They were proud of him for
choosing to tell the truth and correct his mistake bravely. Though he didn’t spend his New-year
silver dollar on nice things, George gained a clear conscience and heartfelt happiness. He realized that being honest always brings peace to one’s heart, which is the best gift he could ever get.
