A simple blood test can reliably detect signs of brain damage in people on the path to
1 (develop) Alzheimer’s disease even before they show signs of confusion and memory loss, a study from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases in Germany 2 (show).
The researchers studied more than 400 people participating in the Dominantly Inherited
Alzheimer’s Network (DIAN) study, 247 who carry an early-onset genetic variant and 162 of their unaffected relatives 3 (include). Each participant had previously visited a DIAN clinic to give blood, undergo brain scans and complete cognitive tests. Roughly half had been evaluated
more than once, typically about two to three years apart.
They found that in those with the faulty gene variant, protein levels were higher at baseline and rose over time. In contrast, protein levels were low and largely steady in people with the
healthy form of the gene, and this difference was detectable 16 years 4 cognitive symptoms were expected to arise.
Moreover, when the researchers took a look at participants’brain scans, they found that the protein levels rose quickly in step with the speed at which the precuneus, a part of the brain
involved in memory, 5 (thin).
To find out whether blood protein levels ____6____ be used to predict cognitive decline, the researchers collected data on 39 people with disease-causing variants when they returned to the clinic an average of two years after their last visit, and found that people 7 blood protein levels had previously risen rapidly were most likely to show signs of brain atrophy and
diminished cognitive abilities when they revisited the clinic.
All kinds of neurological damage can cause the neurofilament light protein 8
(spill) out of neurons and into blood. Protein levels are high in people with Lewy body dementia and Huntington’s disease.
“It is important 9 we confirm our findings in late-onset Alzheimer’s disease and define the time period over which neurofilament changes have to be assessed for optimal clinical predictability,” said senior author Mathias Jucker, who leads the DIAN study in Germany.
The researchers may one day apply the findings to quickly and inexpensively identify brain damage in people with not just Alzheimer’s disease but other neurodegenerative conditions
10 multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury or stroke.

Low-cost diabetes drug slows ageing in male monkeys and is particularly effective at
delaying the effects of ageing on the brain, finds a small study that tracked the animals for more
than three years. The results raise the possibility that the widely used medication, metformin (二甲双胍), could one day be used to 11 ageing in humans.
Metformin has been used for more than 60 years to lower blood-sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes—and is the second most-prescribed medication in the United States. The drug has
long been known to have effects beyond treating diabetes, leading researchers to study it against conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and ageing.
Data from worms, rodents, flies and people who have taken the drug for diabetes suggest the drug might have anti-ageing effects. But its ___12___ against ageing had not been tested
directly in primates, and it is unclear whether its potential anti-ageing effects are achieved by lowering blood sugar or through a separate 13 .
This led Guanghui Liu, a biologist who studies ageing at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, and his colleagues to test the drug on 12 elderly male cynomolgus macaques (食蟹猴); another 16 elderly monkeys and 18 young or middle-aged animals served as a control group.
Every day, 14 monkeys received the standard dose of metformin that is used to control diabetes in humans. The animals took the drug for 40 months, 15 to about 13 years for humans.
Over the course of the study, Liu and his colleagues took samples from 79 types of the
monkeys’ tissues and organs, ___16___ the animals’ brains and performed routine physical
examinations. By analyzing the cellular activity in the samples, the researchers were able to create a computational model to determine the tissues’ “biological age”, which can lag behind or
17 the animals’ age in years since birth.
The researchers observed that the drug slowed the biological ageing of many tissues,
including from the lung, kidney, liver, skin and the brain’s frontal lobe. They also found that it
suppressed chronic inflammation, a key 18 of ageing. The study was not intended to see
whether the drug extended the animals’ lifespans; previous research has not established an impact on lifespan but has shown ___19___ health span— the number of years an organism lives in good health.
This means that metformin can“ 20 rewind organ age” in monkeys, Liu says. The authors also identified a potential pathway by which the drug protects the brain; it activates a
protein called NRF 2, which safeguards against cellular damage triggered by injury and inflammation.

Lately, it’s been hard for Jack Innenan, a 22-year-old TikTok star from Toronto, to create content. “I feel like I’m a keg (酒桶) that’s been empty for a year,” he said.
Spending hours shooting, editing, storyboarding, with fans, setting up brand
deals and balancing the many other responsibilities that come with being a successful content

He’s hardly the only one. Throughout 2020, social media a new generation of young stars. Now, many of them say they have reached a point.
Burnout has affected generations of social media creators. In 2017, Instagram influencers began leaving the platform, saying they were feeling depressed and discouraged. In 2018, many large YouTube creators began stepping away from the platform, mental health issues.
But problems with burnout in the creator community are endemic. “If you slow down, you might disappear,” the YouTuber Olga Kay told Fast Company in 2014.
When a fresh crop of young stars seeking fame and fortune began building audiences on TikTok in late 2019 and early 2020, many were that this time would be different.
Still, they weren’t prepared for the draining work of building, maintaining and an audience. , they have encountered all kinds of problems, including bullying harassment and discrimination. “Some creators get their content too, so someone else will go viral off their content and get all the ,” Mr. Harris said.
To cope with depression, many TikTok creators have sought therapy and life coaching, or tried to be more with their fans and friends about their struggles.
A TikTok spokesperson wrote in an email statement, “We’re focused on understanding their individual content goals and experiences, and our teams continue to work to provide
resources, support, and an open door for feedback.”
But even the most platforms can’t eliminate the hazards inherent in a creator’s

Christophe Petyt is the world’s leading dealer in fake masterpieces. His company employs over eighty painters, each steeped in the style of a particular artist or school. “We choose them
very carefully,” he says. “They’re usually people with very good technique but not much
creativity, who are unlikely to make it as artists in their own right. But they love the great works and have real insight into what’s gone into them.”
The view when Petyt started out was that very little of this could be legal. He was pursued
through the French courts by museums and by descendants of the artists, with several major
French art dealers cheering from the sidelines. “The establishment was suspicious of us,” says Petyt, “but for the wrong reasons, I think. Some people want to keep all the best art for
themselves.” He won the case and as the law now stands, the works and signatures of any artist who has been dead for seventy years can be freely copied on condition that the copy cannot be passed off to dealers as the real thing.
Until he started the business ten years ago, Petyt, a former business-school student, barely knew one artist from another. Then one particular painting by Van Gogh caught his eye. At $10
million, it was well beyond his reach so he came up with the idea of getting an art-student friend to paint him a copy. In an old frame it looked absolutely wonderful, and Petyt began to wonder
what market there might be for it. He picked up a coffee-table book of well-known paintings,
earmarked a random selection of works and got his friend to knock them off. “Within a few
months I had about twenty good copies,” he says, “so I organized an exhibition. In two weeks
we’d sold the lot, and got commissions for sixty more.” It became clear that a huge market existed for fake masterpieces.
Petyt’s paintings are exhibited in places with luxurious houses in need of equally
impressive works of art. Although their owners include rock stars, fashion designers and top
businesspeople, they either cannot afford or more likely simply cannot obtain great works of art. Petyt is understandably reluctant to name any of his clients, but says that sometimes even the
owner of the original will occasionally commission a copy. “The best paintings are so valuable,” he explains, “that it’s risky to have them at home and the costs of security and insurance are huge. So some collectors keep the original in a bank and hang our copy.”
36 .What do we learn about the painters employed by Petyt
A .They need to be specially trained to produce fake masterpieces.
B .They have been chosen because of their painting techniques.
C .They are able to reproduce paintings of a wide range of styles.
D .They have shown their creativity in their original works.
37 .How does Petyt feel about the attempts to prove that his activities were illegal
A .He suspects that they were not driven by public-spirited motivations.
B .He accepts that they were useful in helping to establish his integrity.

Five of the Smartest Robots in History
1966 ELIZA One of the first example of a chatterbot. When running a script labelled with DOCTOR, ELIZA could ask and answer questions like a psychotherapist. It didn’t understand a great deal, but with some clever programming was still able to convince many users of its intelligence.
1994 VIRTUAL CREATURES Computer artist and researcher Karl Sims created a group of virtual creatures that lived in their own virtual universe. Using genetic algorithms (算法), they evolved until they could swim, crawl, jump and compete against one another. Unfortunately, they were too concerned with their own virtual lives to talk to us.
1997 DEEP BLUE Deep Blue was thrown into public consciousness when it won a chess game against grandmaster Garry Kasparov — the first supercomputer to make such a great achievement. However, it was given a lot of help from human programmers and used pretty basic AI methods to think of its
moves, so maybe it was not so bright after all.
2011 IBM WATSON IBM Watson was the first AI that beat human players at US TV quiz show Jeopardy!. This AI was clever enough to process text and then found likely answers to the question asked using its internal body of knowledge, which consisted of around 200 million pages of content. Sadly, it struggled to answer some basic questions.
2015 DEEP-Q NETWORK This earlier work from the team behind AlphaGo, the AI that defeated a master of the complex Japanese strategy game Go, learned how to play 49 classic Atari games just by looking at the screen — it didn’t get any help from programmers. While it was brilliant at a lot of the games, it couldn’t get the hang of Pac-Man.

C .whether they have beaten human players D .how they have caught the public attention 42 .Which of the following statements is true of VIRTUAL CREATURES
A .They looked like space creatures.
B .They were unable to respond to people.
C .They could swim as soon as they were created.
D .They led to the application of genetic algorithms.

Financial regulations in Britain have imposed a rather unusual rule on the bosses of big
banks. Starting next year, any guaranteed bonus of top executives could be delayed 10 years if
their banks are under investigation for wrongdoing. The main purpose of this “clawback” rule is to hold bankers responsible for harmful risk-taking and to restore public trust in financial institution.
Yet officials also hope for a much larger benefit: more long-term decision-making not only by banks but also by all corporations, to build a stronger economy for future generations.
“Short-termism” or the desire for quick profits, has worsened in publicly traded companies, says the Bank of England’s top economist, Andrew Haldane. He quotes a giant of classical
economies, Alfred Marshall, in describing this financial impatience as acting like “Children who pick the strawberries out of their pudding to eat them at once” rather than putting them aside to be eaten last.
The average time for holding a stock in both the United States and Britain, he notes, has dropped from seven years to seven months in recent decades. Transient(短期的) investors, who demand high quarterly profits from companies, can hold back a firm’s efforts to invest in
long-term research or to build up customer loyalty. This has been called “quarterly capitalism”.
In addition, new digital technologies have allowed more rapid trading of equities( 股 票 ), quicker use of information, and thus shortens attention spans in financial markets. “There seems to be an advantage of short-term thinking at the expense of long-term investing,” said Commissioner Daniel Gallagher of the US Securities and Exchange Commission in speech this week.
In the US, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 has pushed most public companies to delay performance bonuses for senior executives by about a year, slightly helping reduce
“short-termism.” In its latest survey of CEO pay, The Wall Street Journal finds that “a substantial part” of executive pay is now tied to performance.
Much more could be done to encourage “long-termism,” such as changes in the tax code and quicker disclosure(披露) of stock acquisitions. In France, shareholders who hold onto a
company investment for at least two years can sometimes earn more voting rights in a company.
Within companies, the right compensation design can provide motivation for executives to think beyond their own time at the company and on behalf of all shareholders. Britain’s new rule is a reminder to bankers that society has an interest in their performance, not just for the short term but for the long term.
43 .According to Paragraph 1, one reason for imposing the new rule is the .
A .enhance banker’s sense of responsibility
B .help corporations achieve larger profits
C .build a new system of financial regulation

A .the obstacles to preventing “short-termism”.
B .the significance of long-term thinking.
C .the approaches to promoting “long-termism”
D .the popularity of short-term thinking.
46 .Which of the following would be the best title for the text

Artificial Intelligence Develops an Ear for Birdsong
Artificial Intelligence Develops an Ear for Birdsong
We can learn a lot from nature if we listen to it more — and scientists around the world are trying to do just that. From mountain peaks to ocean depths, biologists are planting audio
recorders to eavesdrop (窃听) on the whistles and songs of whales, elephants, bats and especially birds. This summer, for example, over 2,000 electronic ears will record the sound scape of
California’s Sierra Nevada mountain range. 47
“Audio data is a real treasure because it contains vast amounts of information,” says
ecologist Connor Wood, a Cornell University postdoctoral researcher, who is leading the Sierra
Nevada project. “We just need to think creatively about how to share and access that information.” 48 Fortunately the latest generation of machine-learning AI systems can process
thousands of hours of data in less than a day.
Stefan Kahl, a machine-learning expert at Cornell’s Center for Conservation Bioacoustics and Chemnitz University of Technology in Germany, built BirdNET, one of the most popular
avian-sound-recognition systems used today. Wood’s team will rely on BirdNET to analyze the Sierra Nevada recordings. 49 The neural network then teaches itself which features can be used to associate an input (in this case, a bird’s call) with a label (the bird’s identity).
50 Although they analyze audio much more quickly than humans, they still lag
behind in filtering out overlapping sounds to home in on a signal of interest. Some researchers see this as the next problem for AI to tackle. Even the current imperfect versions, however, enable
sweeping projects that would be far too time-consuming for humans to tackle alone. “As ecologists,” Wood says, “tools like BirdNET allow us to dream big.”
A .A wealth of such data already exists for common birds.
B .They altogether will generate nearly a million hours of audio.
C .These machine-learning AI systems still have room for improvement.
D .Such recordings can create valuable snapshots (简介) of animal communities.
E .This is a tricky problem because it takes humans a long time to decode recordings.
F .Such systems start by analyzing hundreds of recorded bird calls, each “labeled” with its corresponding species.
IV. Summary Writing (10 分)
51.Directions: Read the following three passages. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s)
of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
Birdsong and Mental Health
People often turn to nature as a healthy way to cope with stress. People also consider it
relaxing to listen to audio recordings of running water, waves or singing birds. Sound can have an extensive effect on our sense of well-being. Accordingly, scientists have long sought to
understand the effects of certain sounds on people.
In a recent study, scientists evaluated the effect that hearing birdsong had on hikers. They monitored a number of hiking trails in a public park with audio recording devices. This helped them create a bird count in the area. They then surveyed visitors to those trails about their
impression of bird diversity. They also asked for a report on the visitors' sense of well-being.
The next part of the study took place on the same trails. But the scientists used hidden
speakers to play recordings of birds singing. That gave the impression that there were more birds in the area. They then surveyed visitors who had heard the recordings.
The results of the study indicated that there was a direct relationship between hearing
birdsong and an increased sense of well-being. This result builds on prior investigations into the effects of listening to recordings of natural sounds on people. Those studies have shown that
recordings of natural sounds can help with stress relief and the ability to focus. However, the reason behind the benefit is not totally clear.
Perhaps listening to birdsong is connected to a sense of calm. After all, we encounter
birdsong in the peaceful part of the morning or following a storm. Or it might relate to a sense of safety projected by singing birds. They sing when there are no predators nearby. Whatever the
reason, listening to birdsong can improve our mental health.
The authors of the hiking study had an interesting observation. It was the perception of being in nature with a diversity of singing birds that helped. Therefore, they suggested that park managers encourage visitors to enjoy nature quietly as that provided the greatest benefit.

His company employs over eighty painters, each steeped in the style of a particular artist or school. “We choose them very carefully,” he says. “They’re usually
people with very good technique but not much creativity, who are unlikely to make it as artists in
根据第二段中“He was pursued through the French courts by museums and by descendants of the artists, with several major French art dealers cheering from the sidelines. “The establishment was suspicious of us,” says Petyt, “but for the wrong reasons, I think. Some people want to keep all the best art for themselves.”(他遭到了法国各大博物馆以及艺术家后代的联合追讨,而一些法国大型艺术品经销商则在一旁为他们加油助威。“权威机构对我们心存疑

任何已去世七十年的艺术家的作品和签名都可以自由复制,但前提是复制品不能被当作真品卖给经销商)”可知,在赢得官司后,Petyt 有义务确保其产品能被识别为复制品。故选 C。
39.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Petyt’s paintings are exhibited in places with luxurious houses in need of equally impressive works of art. Although their owners include rock stars, fashion
designers and top businesspeople, they either cannot afford or more likely simply cannot obtain
故选 A。

根据题干关键词 Paragraph 1 和 one motive in imposing the new rule 定位到第一段第三句 The main purpose of this “clawback” rule is to hold bankers responsible for
harmful risk-taking and to restore public trust in financial institution. 分析选项:选项 A 的 enhance bankers ’ sense of
responsibility(增强银行家的责任感)符合题意。 选项 C 的 build a new system of financial regulation(建立新的金融监管体系)原文并未提及,属于无中生有;选项 D 的guarantee the bonuses of top executives(保证高层管理人员的奖金)与原文提到的 any
guaranteed bonus of top executives could be delayed 10 years(任何有保证的高管奖金都可能推迟 10 年),与表述相反,是错误的。
根据题干关键词 the influence of transient investment on public companies 定位到原文第三段第二句 Transient investors, who demand high quarterly profits from companies, can hinder a firm’s efforts to invest in long-term research or to build up customer loyalty.
Much more could be done to encourage
分析选项,可知 B 选项 Patience对应原文形容 short temisim(没耐心 impatience)和 long temisim(有耐心 patience) 。

California’s Sierra Nevada mountain range.(例如,这个夏天,超过 2000 只电子耳将会记录加利福尼亚州内华达山脉的声景)”提到这个夏天会有 2000 只以上电子耳记录内华达山脉的声景,B 项“They”指代上文提到的“over 2,000 electronic ears” ,B 项“generate nearly a million
hours of audio(生成将近一百万小时的音频)”是上文“record the sound scape of California’s
48.上文“We just need to think creatively about how to share and access that information.(我们只需要创造性地思考如何共享和访问这些信息)”提出了如何共享和访问所获取的声音信息这一问题。
49 .上文“Wood’s team will rely on BirdNET to analyze the Sierra Nevada recordings.(伍德团队将会依靠 BirdNET 分析此次内华达山脉鸟鸣录音)”提到伍德团队会利用 BirdNET 系统分析鸟鸣录音,F 项的“Such systems”指代的是上文提到的 BirdNET 系统,F 项介绍了该系统一

50 .下文“Although they analyze audio much more quickly than humans, they still lag behind in filtering out overlapping sounds to home in on a signal of interest.(尽管它们分析声音时比人类快得多,但是它们在过滤重叠声音以获得感兴趣信号方面仍然落后)”讲的是 BirdNET 系统存在不足:不能很好地过滤重叠声音以获得感兴趣信号,由此推知,设空处的内容应为指出系统仍有待完善,所以 C 项“这些机器学习人工智能系统仍有进步的空间”符合题意,下文是对C 项的进一步展开说明。故选 C 项。

As an essential part of middle school education, aesthetic education is widely carried out in our school, with music and art courses provided. Yet many students have a superficial understanding of beauty, focusing merely on external forms, skill mastery or fashion trends and lacking the
ability to truly appreciate traditional arts like calligraphy and Chinese painting.
There are three main reasons for this. For one thing, buried in academic work, students have little time to explore traditional art. For another thing, aesthetic courses lay more stress on skill training rather than guiding students to feel art’s inner beauty and cultural connotation. Finally, popular
culture exerts a great influence, making students favor trendy things over traditional arts.
To change this situation, joint efforts are needed. It is schools that should hold traditional art
activities to arouse students’ interest. Teachers, meanwhile, ought to adjust teaching methods.
They inspire students to understand the charm behind artworks. As for students, they need to take the initiative to learn traditional culture, cultivating the ability to discover inner beauty. Only in
