When an earthquake hit a small town, many houses fell down. After the
earthquake, all the newspapers reported many stories about some of the families who were in trouble.
One Sunday, when I was reading a newspaper, a special picture touched me. It gave the clothing sizes of each family member. I thought that this would be a good
chance to teach my children to help those who were less lucky than themselves. I said to my seven-year-old twins, Brad and Brett, and three-year-old Meghan, “We have so much, but these poor people now have nothing. We'll share what we have with them.”
I filled a box with foods and clothes. While I was doing this, I encouraged the children to choose their toys and donate some oftheir less favorite things. Meghan
watched quietly as the boys took out their old toys and games and put them together. Then she walked away. A few minutes later she came back with Lucy, her

much-loved doll. She put the doll on top of the other toys. “Oh, dear,” I said, “you don't have to give Lucy. You love her so much.” Meghan said, “Lucy makes me
happy, Mommy. Maybe she'll make another little girl happy, too.”
I looked at Meghan for a long moment. She taught me a lesson. It's easy to give something that we don't want any more, but hard to give what we cherish(珍爱) isn't it

While the start of a new school year is always exciting, this year was even more so for some students at White Cloud Primary School. They became the world’s first kids to be taught by an electronic teacher. This electronic teacher is not a human-like robot walking around the classroom. Instead, he is a computer-created head that
appears, when needed, on students computer or phone screens. His name is Bill.
Created by technology company Smart Machines, Bill is able to show
human-like behavior. He is designed to teach a special program about
environmental-friendly power created by the sun and wind. This program, started in 2005, used to be taught by human teachers.
Just like human teachers, Bill is able to immediately respond to the students’
questions and opinions about the topic. Thanks to computer cameras, he is also able to see and react to students physical actions. For example, if a student smiles at Bill, he
responds by smiling back. This two-way exchange helps get the students’ attention. More importantly, it allows the program developers to improve Bills behavior and knowledge base when needed.
The program has been a great success, according to Smart Machines spokesman Robert Frost Frost says, “What is interesting to me is the children’s reaction to Bill.
He really captures their attention.” Frost thinks kids don’t find the experience of being taught by smart machines as strange as older people because they have grown up in a time of computers and smart phones.
It is doubtful, however, that human educators will lose their jobs to Bill any
time soon. For one, his talking head’s knowledge base is not large. More importantly, even the smartest computer programs can’t guess and react to all the unexpected
situations that educators face daily. Bills future might be as a “personal tutor”, providing kids with one-on-one help for different subjects and topics.
8 .What is Bill
A .A human-like robot.
B .A kind of computer game.
C .A computer recording tool.
D .A computer-created talking head.
9 .How does the two-way exchange help the program developers

B .It allows Bill to respond more quickly.
C .It helps them know how to improve Bill.
D .It helps them study students’ body language.
10 .The underlined word “they” in Paragraph 4 refers to .
A .kids
B .older people
C .smart machines
D .program developers
11 .What is Bill NOT good at doing

C .Responding to students’ questions.
D .Dealing with unexpected situations.
12 .How might Bill be used in the future according to the last paragraph
A .To work as human classroom teachers.

Robots used to be found only in science fiction. In the 1960s, the animated
space-age family the Jetsons had a robotic maid who could do household chores. In real life robots function in many manufacturing and household situations. In the filed of medicine, robot patients help train doctors and nurses by pretending they have a
variety of health conditions. 13
The global pandemic and resulting economic crisis have created a lack of
restaurant workers. Since restaurants don’t have enough workers, the remaining staff must work harder. Regardless, customers face longer wait times, fewer menu choices and higher prices. 14 These robots are not exactly modeled after Rosey, the Jetsons’ robotic household servant, but they are pretty clever (and very cute).
15 Many have a design that looks like a rolling cart. One model named Bella even has a cute cat-like face. Many are fairly short and shaped like R2D2 of
Star Wars fame. They are designed to deliver dishes to regular customers in a
restaurant. 16 They can not only deliver delicious food to performing
repetitive tasks, however many there are. They can not only deliver delicious food to hungry customers, but also get back dirty dishes at the end of the meal.
17 Concerning the price, a server robot costs from a few thousand to
several thousand dollars. Regarding safety, special sensors on the robots keep them
from crashing into customers. Because there aren’t enough restaurant workers, filling positions with these robotic servers is a no-brainer. Don’t be surprised if you see one
rolling up to your table soon.
A .Server robots come in several different varieties.
B .Now robots are finding a home in the food service industry.
C .Workers are afraid of being replaced by robots in the future.
D .They are also just the right height for customers to easily reach them.
E .Robots are playing an important role in almost everywhere nowadays.
F .Perhaps you’re wondering about issues such as the cost and safety factors.
G.Some founders are lending a hand — a robotic hand — in the form of server robots.
Have you ever wondered what chickens are talking about Chickens are quite
the communicators — their clucks, squawks and purrs are not just random sounds but a complex language system. These sounds are their way of interacting with the world and expressing joy, fear, and social connection to one another.
Like humans, the “language” of chickens varies with age, environment, and
surprisingly, domestication (驯化), giving us insights into their social structures and behaviours. Understanding these sounds can transform our approach to poultry (家禽) farming, enhancing chicken welfare and quality of life.
Our research at Dalhousie University applies artificial intelligence (AI) to
decode the language of chickens. It’s a project that is set to revolutionize our
understanding of these feathered creatures and their communication methods, offering a window into their world that was previously closed to us. The use of AI and
machine learning is like having a universal translator for chicken speech. AI can
analyze vast amounts of audio data. Our algorithms (算法) are learning to recognize patterns and tiny differences in chicken sounds. This isn’t a simple task — chickens have a range of sounds that vary in pitch, tone, and context. But by using advanced data analysis techniques, we’re beginning to crack their code. This breakthrough in animal communication is not just a scientific achievement; it’s a step towards more humane and empathetic treatment of farm animals.
One of the most exciting aspects of this research is understanding the emotional content behind these sounds. Are they stressed Are they content By understanding
their emotional state, we can make more informed decisions about their care and environment.
This project isn’t just about academic curiosity; it has real-world implications. We’re not only unlocking the secrets of avian (鸟类的) communication but also
setting new standards for animal welfare.
18 .What can we know about chickens from the first two paragraphs
A .They lack emotions.

19 .What is the significance of the research conducted at Dalhousie University
A .It facilitates new chicken breeds.
B .It holds great promise for animal care.
C .It solely demonstrates an academic theory.
D .It revoutionizes human-chicken interaction.
20 .What is a highlight of the research
A .Uncovering chickens’ behaviours.
B .Discovering advanced feeding techniques.
C .Comprehending chickens’ emotional states.
D .Examining chickens’ living circumstances.
21 .What is the main idea of the text
A .The secret of chickens’ life.

into their world that was previously closed to us. The use of AI and machine learning is like
having a universal translator for chicken speech. AI can analyze vast amounts of audio data. Our
algorithms (算法) are learning to recognize patterns and tiny differences in chicken sounds. 以及最后一段“This project isn’t just about academic curiosity; it has real-world implications. We’re not only
unlocking the secrets of avian (鸟类的) communication but also setting new standards for animal welfare.
