Tomatoes are one of the most common foods in the world. You can find them in salads, sandwiches, and sauces (酱汁). But did you know that the tomato has an amazing history
Tomatoes first grew in South America. Spanish (西班牙的) explorers brought them to Europe in the 16th century. However, when they arrived, many Europeans were afraid to eat them! They thought tomatoes were poisonous because the plant belongs to the nightshade family (茄科), some of which can easily make people sick or cause death. For a long time, people in Europe only grew tomatoes as pretty plants in their gardens.
It took almost 200 years for tomatoes to become popular as food. People in Italy was the first to use them in cooking. They discovered that tomatoes were not only safe but also delicious and healthy. They began making tomato sauce for pasta and pizza. Slowly, the rest of Europe and the world learned to love this red, juicy fruit. In fact, a tomato is a fruit, not a vegetable!

As we all know, bamboo is a useful plant. It can be used to make food, houses, paper and even musical instruments. Now, bamboo is playing a new role in protecting the earth—replacing plastic (代替塑料).
Each year, the world produces about 400 million tons of plastic waste(塑料废弃物). To solve this problem, some areas in China are using bamboo instead of plastic. Anji County in Zhejiang Province is one example. It is called the “Bamboo Sea” of Zhejiang. Every year, Anji grows between 400,000 and 500,000 tons of bamboo. Its bamboo forests cover 666 square kilometers — about 80% of the size of New York City.
In Anji, bamboo is used in many ways to replace plastic. People have bamboo baskets and chairs at home. Restaurants and hotels use bamboo bowls and spoons. Kindergartens give children bamboo toys. At markets, shoppers use bamboo bags instead of plastic ones. These bags are eco-friendly, can break down in three months, and are stronger than plastic bags. On farms, bamboo film (薄膜) replaces plastic film. Because bamboo film is biodegradable(可生物降解的), farmers do not need to collect and remove it from fields.
Bamboo also has other advantages. After cutting, it keeps growing, so people do not need to replant it. Moreover, bamboo grows very fast. Trees may take over 10 years to mature, but bamboo needs only 4 to 6 years.
Bamboo products are popular in international markets. Anji is working to make more bamboo goods. All in all,the future of bamboo looks bright.
