On the first day of school, something terrible happened. Liu Ping and his family lost everything in a big house fire. It was a very hard time for them.
Liu Ping’s classmates heard the bad news. They wanted to help him and said, “Don’t be afraid. We are with you.”

Language Points
on the first day of school = on the first school day（开学第一天）
happen (尤指偶然) 发生；碰巧，不及物动词。
sth. happens to sb.：某事发生在某人身上（如：What happened to Liu Ping 刘平怎么了？）
sb. happens to do sth.：某人碰巧做某事（如：I happened to meet my teacher on the street.我刚好在街上遇到了我的老师。）

刘平和他的家人在一场大火中失去了一切。
lose “失去；遗失”，及物动词，后接不定代词everything作宾语，表 “失去所有东西”。
拓展短语:
lose one’s way 迷路（例：He lost his way in the park yesterday. 他昨天在公园里迷路了。）
lose heart 失去信心（例：Don’t lose heart when you fail the exam. 考试失败时不要灰心。）
lose weight 减肥（例：She wants to lose weight by exercising. 她想通过锻炼减肥。）
lose touch with sb. 和某人失去联系（例：I lost touch with my primary school friend years ago. 几年前我和我的小学朋友失去了联系。）

bring sth. from sp. 从某地带来某物（动作从远到近）

汤姆把一个新球带到了操场上。

例：We donated some books to the village school.

lucky money 压岁钱（固定短语，不可数）
常用搭配：get lucky money 收压岁钱；give sb. lucky money 给某人压岁钱
例：Kids usually get lucky money during the Spring Festival.
孩子们通常在春节收压岁钱。
动词过去式的规则变化
类别 构成方法 例
一般情况 加-ed play—played, help→helped
以不发音的e结尾的动词 加-d live→lived, hope→hoped
以“辅音字母 +y”结尾的动词 变y为i，再加-ed cry—cried, study→studied
以重读闭音节结尾，且末尾只有一个辅音字母的动词 双写末尾辅音字母，再加-ed stop→stopped, drop→dropped

When we talk about a thing in the past, we usually add -ed or -d at the end of the verb. Some words do not follow the rules.
