I recognized that it was me who was at fault. The more I thought about my brother's situation, the heavier my heart felt. My brother, whose dog was his constant companion, must have felt deeply hurt by my thoughtless decision. Without hesitation, I decided to take immediate action to mend our relationship. To begin with, I shared my idea with my wife, and she encouraged me to mend it. Determined to fix things, she decided to help me make some biscuits, hoping they would convey my sincere apology.
With the biscuits my wife made, I went to my brother’s home. As I knocked on the door, my heart was beating faster and faster, and I kept rubbing my hands together nervously. When he opened the door, his expression was cold, which made me feel even guiltier. I stepped forward, holding out the gifts, and said firmly, "I was wrong. I didn't consider how important your dog is to you. Please forgive me." He stared at me in silence for a long moment, and then his shoulders relaxed. "Come in," he murmured. As we sat down and shared the biscuits, I realized that understanding could break down the barriers and that our relationship would become stronger than ever.
I recognized that it was me who was at fault. My pride had blinded me to his loneliness. Toby wasn’t just a pet for my brother! Shame washed over me as I recalled his weary eyes that evening. How lonely he must have felt! My inconsideration forced him to leave in the rain without being understood. Reminded once again by my wife, I had the determination, picked up my phone and typed a sincere apology, admitting my thoughtlessness. To my relief, he replied, though his message was brief. It was a start, but I knew words alone weren’t enough.
With the biscuits my wife made, I went to my brother’s home.Heart pounding, I knocked. The door creaked open and out came Toby, tail wagging wildly. My brother stood silently, his expression unreadable. “I brought these for Toby,” I said, holding out the biscuits. A faint smile touched his lips as he took them. “Come in,” he finally muttered. As we sat in the living room, the awkwardness slowly faded. We talked about Toby, about old grand memories, and even about our future life. Gradually, the unspoken forgiveness between us dissolved the chill of those two lonely months.

In a class discussion, I was invited to explain the meaning of my name. My heart raced wildly, but seeing genuine curiosity in my classmates’ eyes, I thought the good chance came. I took a deep breath, cleared my throat and explained, “In Chinese, ‘Qiu’ means autumn, and ‘Yu’ means rain.” I confidently felt my voice steadying. “Autumn rain washes away summer’s heat, bringing renewal. My parents hope I’d adapt to life’s changes with grace.” To my surprise, my professor repeated “Qiuyu” slowly but perfectly. “Like nature’s gentle transition,” he whispered. A ripple of understanding passed through the room.
Many of my classmates got interested and came up to me after class. As I was packing my bag, my classmates gathered around, begging eagerly. I wrote Qiuyu on a notepad, breaking it into syllables: “Qiu reads like ‘chew’ softly, Yu like ‘you’ but lighter.” We practised together, laughter filling the air with each attempt. “Thanks for correcting us,” Maria encouraged. “We really honor your culture.” At that moment, I realized sharing my identity wasn’t imposing but inviting others into the world of Chinese. Their effort to pronounce “Qiuyu” became a symbol of mutual respect of different cultures.
In a class discussion, I was invited to explain the meaning of my name. Gathering all my nerves, I slowly began to speak. “ In China, each name carries a distinct story. “Qiu” refers to autumn- a season alive with poetic vibes, when leaves are dancing in the breeze, and the air is heavy with charm of harvest. And “Yu” means rain, a gentle nourishment for feeding everything in nature.” The whole classroom fell silent , each pair of eyes fixed on me. It seemed that they hung on my words, intrigued by the profound meaning behind my name. When I finished speaking, I breathed a sigh of relief and warm applause erupted in every corner of the room.
Many of my classmates got interested and came up to me after class. “That’s so amazing! Your name is poetic! Teach us to say it properly, please.” a girl exclaimed with anticipation. Beaming a smile, I repeated “Qiu Yu”, and they followed, their accents a bit clumsy but full of effort. With each attempt, their pronunciation grew closer to the right one. A classmate who finally made it and said, “Q-i-u-Yu- now I know it’s not just a name, but about the autumn rain.” At that moment, I felt a deep sense of pride. My name, once a source of awkwardness, had become a bridge, connecting my homeland’s culture with my new friends, and weaving a bond of understanding and appreciation.

I ran back to Gunter and told him the bad news. The desperation in my eyes must have been evident, because his expression softened. He glanced at the bus, then at the queue that was now almost gone, and back at me. "Don't worry," he said in a reassuring tone, "I'll figure something out." He pulled out his phone again and started dialing another number. This time, it was a call to his bank. With a few swift moves, he managed to transfer some funds to cover the fare. "Here," he handed me a handful of euros, "take this. Let's get you on that bus."
Four days later, when I was back in Vienna, I called Gunter as promised. His voice was warm and welcoming when he answered, "Ah, my friend from the airport! How was your conference " I thanked him for his help and told him about the success of my presentation. "I'm glad to hear that," he replied. "And don't worry about the money. I'm just happy I could help." I insisted on repaying him, and we arranged to meet at a café near the airport. Over coffee, we exchanged stories and laughter, and it turned out that Gunter had not only been a lifesaver but also a wonderful friend.

I ran back to Gunter and told him the bad news. To my surprise, his face softened with understanding. Instead of being annoyed, he gave a warm smile and said, “Don't worry! Your bus is about to leave. Here, you need this.” With that, he quickly pulled out his wallet and handed me enough cash for the fare. I was so overwhelmed by his kindness that I could only stammer, “Thank you... I'll pay you back, I promise!” Grasping his hand in gratitude for a second, I then turned and dashed towards the bus, shouting my thanks over my shoulder.
Four days later, when I was back in Vienna, I called Gunter as promised. He picked me up from my hotel, and this time, the atmosphere was entirely different — warm and cheerful. The moment I got into the car, I immediately returned the money and said, “I can't thank you enough. You really saved me that night.” Gunter smiled widely at me as if we were old friends. True to my word, I treated him to a generous local dinner. As we said our goodbyes, I knew this unexpected encounter, sparked by a simple act of kindness, had blossomed into a genuine friendship that I would always cherish.

A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news. I was told to attend the award presentation for the writing contest, my jaw dropping in astonishment. "Writing has always been so difficult and painful for me, yet I got an award for writing like this " I murmured, my eyes challenging. At the ceremony, the host announced that I had won the Best Narrative Award. I held the trophy, excitement choking my words.
I went to my teacher’s office after the award presentation. "It's incredible! I made it!" I exclaimed, pleased beyond description. Looking at the trophy, my teacher seemed not surprised, a small smile curling at the corner of his mouth, "My boy, it is your commitment and perseverance that eventually paid off!" Since then, my teacher's encouraging words, just like a lighthouse in the mist, had always been lighting in the sky of my life.

A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news. I won the first prize! Although a little surprised, I knew that I deserved the prize. I had made every effort to make my writing perfect. At the award presentation ceremony, the headmaster presented me with the award, congratulating me on winning the first prize. My fellow students applauded me loudly, many showing great admiration. Overwhelmed by the feelings of being proud of myself, I thought of my English teacher, without whom I couldn’t have won the contest. I decided to thank him in person.
I went to my teacher's office after the award presentation. When I presented the award certificate to my teacher, his eyes glistening with tears, he reached out his hands and hugged me tightly. I expressed my sincerest gratitude to the teacher and attributed this small achievement to him. Looking into my eyes, he said, “I’m so proud of you. It’s your own hard work that paid off. Believe in yourself and you can write better and better.” I nodded determinedly. That was when I fell in love with writing.

We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me.Stroking his head, I said to him in a soft tone, “Boy, I understand your anxiety. After all, there are so many strange students who don’t know your situation. But I think nobody will laugh at a brave kid like you. You see, it was your participating in different events bravely and actively at school that had proved your ability and gained your schoolmates’ acceptance and respect.” Hearing that, David raised his head, eyes sparking with determination. With his usual big toothy smile, he nodded to me, “As long as I don't let difficulties get in my way, I’m convinced that I will make it.”
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. The second the starter’s gun sounded, David lurched forward while the other children rushed like arrows. To be true, it was really challenging for David to cover such a hard cross-country run. The whole course was tough to ordinary kids, let alone David, a small kid with a brain disease. I accompanied him all the way in case that emergency would occur. To my shock and pride, exhausting as the race was, David swung his feet and dragged his body forward and didn’t give up halfway. Even though having waited for almost two hours, the crowd cheered with thunderous applause when witnessing the small figure spurt to the finish line. I knew it was then that the persistent kid could come to a conclusion that life is tough, but he can be tougher.
We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn't look at me. He just lowered his head, obviously in a low spirit. I caressed his head, comforting him gently. After a short moment's silence, he burst out into tears, saying it was not his real choice not to participate in the cross-country run. His worry was that kids from other different schools would laugh at his awkward behavior. “So it's time to prove yourself. With your persistent practice, you can make it!” He looked at me trustfully. With my warm words and high five, he raised his head and headed forwards firmly.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. The signal rang out, the student athletes shot like arrows, except him. He swung his feet forward with great efforts. Strong determination and perseverance led him to finish the run as regular kids. Though arriving at the finishing line long behind others, David held his hands high with the gesture of “V”, winning applauses from the audience! Splendid smiles on his face bloomed just like flowers in summer. Indeed, I wish someday the challenges children in special schools would inspire them to be better persons.

As the twins looked around them in disappointment, their father appeared. His jaw dropped open at the sight of the great mess. After the twins explained that they were trying to make a surprise for their mom, he smiled, put some ointment on Jeff’s hand and helped clean up the stove. “Dad, can you help us with the breakfast ” Jenna asked. “Sure! Now I am officially a member of the Mother’s-Day-surprise team!” Under their father’s instruction, Jeff stood by the pot and stirred the porridge from time to time while Jenna carefully fried the French toast. “Eyes on your task!” the father reminded. Before long, the breakfast was ready.
The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up. Before she asked, Jenna and Jeff said in chorus, “Happy Mother’s Day!” Blushed, Jenna said, “Mom, we would like to say thank you. Thank you for bringing us to the world, which makes everything possible. Thank you for being a loving and supportive mom. You are always there for us when we are cast down, and you are happier than anyone else when we achieve something, however small the accomplishment is.” With tears welling up, the mother threw her arms around them. Never has she been more pleased and proud.

As the twins looked around them in disappointment, their father appeared. "What's going on here " he asked with a concerned look. Jenna and Jeff explained everything to him, from their plan to surprise their mother to the mess they had made in the kitchen. Their father listened patiently and then said, "Well, it seems like you've had a bit of a rough start, but that's okay. Mistakes are part of learning. Let me help you clean up this mess and we can start over." With his help, they quickly cleaned the stove and the kitchen. Then, their father guided them step - by - step on how to make the French toast and chicken porridge properly.
The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up. "Happy Mother's Day, Mom!" they said excitedly. Their mother opened her eyes and saw the tray with the French toast and chicken porridge. A look of surprise and then pure joy spread across her face. "Oh, my dear children! This is the best Mother's Day surprise ever. You've made me so proud," she said, hugging them tightly. The twins felt a warm sense of accomplishment as they saw the happiness on their mother's face. They knew that even though they had made mistakes, their love and effort had made this Mother's Day truly special.
