For most of my life, I treated taste as fixed. There were things I liked and things I didn't,and
that was that.
Sticking to that belief had left me in a bit of a standstill. I stopped making time for new
hobbies or trying anything new. Salsa lessons No, thanks. Interactive theatre Not for me.But my
automatic“no” to anything that“wasn't my thing” only kept me trapped in the same routine of
work, sleep, eating, and that left me feeling listless and a little empty.
So, in an effort to break the boredom, I began to question whether my taste was fixed at all,
or whether it might be something I could train. I had read that children need 8 to 15 tries to accept
a new food. Why shouldn't the same principle apply to social activities for adults
I started small. When a friend invited me to a book club, I resisted the urge to dismiss
it,despite my longstanding dislike of reading due to dyslexia(阅读障碍症). But I went anyway.I
listened to the first book on audio book and, to my surprise, enjoyed the discussion and the
people. Now I spend mornings reading. Then came music and performance: jazz clubs, line
dancing, contemporary performance —— all things I had previously ignored.
Trying things you thought you wouldn't enjoy, I found, became oddly addictive. I didn't love
everything straight away, but I stopped saying no before I had even begun. Most recently,I tried
out my local library's chess club. I was easily 30 years younger than everyone else, but that didn't
matter. Honestly, there was nothing quite like being wiped off the board by someone who had
been playing since before your parents met. I felt more of a connection with others there than at
any organized twenty-something social event I' ve attended.
Putting“try something new” in my diary once a week broke up the work-commute-collapse
cycle I had accidentally built my life around. Now I simply count to five, approach the
friendliest-looking person with a“hello”, and any initial awkwardness quickly fades. Next week
Who knows. Maybe magic lessons. Maybe life drawing. Maybe both.
28. How did the author's fixed idea affect her
A. It simplified her daily routine.
B. It left her more time for work.
C. It flattened her life into dullness.
D. It spared her unwanted socializing.
29. Why did the author accept her friend's invitation to a book club
A. To make a conscious shift in her life.
B. To revisit a former interest in reading.
C. To meet her friend's repeated requests.
D. To occupy a blank in her personal calendar.
30. How did the author feel when losing the chess game
A. Totally relieved. B. Slightly puzzled.
C. Rather embarrassed. D. Somewhat delighted.
31. What message does the author try to convey
A. Learn to say no. B. Break out of your shell.
C. Look before you leap. D. Let go of the past.

In the crystal-clear waters near Talamone, Italy, an extraordinary sight awaits beneath
theMediterranean Sea's surface. Mermaids(美人鱼), towering giants and enormous sculptural
eyes gaze upward from the ocean floor, creating an otherworldly underwater gallery that
serves a crucial environmental purpose. This unique initiative represents one innovative
fisherman's determined effort to protect vital fishing grounds from the disastrous impact of
commercial fishing nets that threaten marine ecosystems.
The underwater sculpture garden operates on a simple yet effective principle that
strategically placed artistic installations (安装工程 ) work alongside concrete blocks to
physically obstruct and break the fishing nets that destroy marine life. These massive fishing
nets, dragged across the seafloor by commercial ships, destroy delicate underwater habitats
and deplete fish populations that local fishing communities depend upon for their livelihood.
The project has evolved beyond its initial conservation goals to become a cooperative
effort involving local educational institutions and young artists. Students from an high school
in nearby Grosseto have actively participated in the initiative, creating specialized sculptural
works designed to serve two purposes. These student-crafted pieces not only contribute to the
anti-fishing barrier system but also provide alternative habitats for marine creatures. By
offering the marine species a safe shelter within the sculptural installations, the project helps
reduce their vulnerability to illegal fishing practices while supporting natural population
recovery.
The fisherman behind the initiative recognized that traditional regulatory approaches
alone were not enough to fulfill the environmental commitment. And the sculptures
themselves have captured international attention while serving practical conservation
purposes. Each piece sunk to the Mediterranean floor contributes to a growing underwater
museum that tells the story of local efforts to preserve marine biodiversity.
As the sculpture garden continues to expand, it serves as an inspiring example of how art
and environmental protection can work together to create lasting positive change in marine
ecosystems.
32. What is the purpose of the underwater sculptures
A. To protect underwater ecosystems.
B. To promote local fishing industry
C. To raise environmental awareness.
D. To create an attractive artistic gallery.
33. What does the underlined word“deplete” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Carefully manage. B. Gradually relocate.
C. Significantly reduce. D. Successfully protect.
34. What can we learn about the project in paragraph 3
A. The project calls for more support from students and artists.
B. The project has expanded into a community-based initiative.
C. The sculptures have managed to stop practices of illegal fishing.
D. The sculptures show superior artistic skills of the young participants.

As a freezing cold winter draws near, the winter blues often sets in —— a low mood
marked by feeling sadder, less energized or less interested in activities than usual. 36
Here is what you can do to get it over.
Laughter is the best medicine that stimulates brain activity to relieve depressive
symptoms. 37 You can get the greatest gift from them: a hearty laugh. Laughter is
highly infectious, so invite friends to join you and share the popcorn. While prolonged
screen time isn't advised, an occasional movie marathon is perfect on cold days.
It's essential to build activities into your day and give yourself a manageable task to
complete. Even chores like cleaning the floor will give you a sense of competence and
achievement. 38 You can treat yourself to fresh flowers or homemade cup of hot
cocoa. These fun or meaningful things are the basis for behavioral activation, a vital means
of boosting spirits.
39 If a coworker's upcoming Bermuda vacation sparks your travel wish, plan a
local staycation ———— even a mini one, for example, a Sunday afternoon ice skating
with friends, trying a new nearby restaurant or going to a concert. All this requires neither a
big budget nor time off work but still cheers you up.
Lack of sunshine disturbs the body's biological clock, leading to a drop in serotonin(血
清素 ) and vitamin D levels, and therefore, your mood and energy levels. If you have
flexibility and the weather allows, try to schedule early-morning walks or lunchtime jogs
outside to get more natural light. 40
A. Stop thinking about unpleasant stuff.
B. Line up a bunch of comedies to watch.
C. Positive habits can promote self-discipline.
D. But do balance your hard work with minor joys.
E. They' ll brighten your day and recharge your energy.
F. If ignored, it' ll worsen into a serious mental disorder.
G. People get a mood lift with something to look forward to.

The airport announcement informed passengers that due to bad weather, the flight would be
delayed for two hours before boarding. Mary's mom commented quietly that the delay seemed to
have ruined everyone's mood. But eleven-year-old Mary stayed calm, softly humming(哼 ) a new
song she had just learned. She was looking forward to the weekend trip to visit her
grandparents, excited to share the song with them.
To her, music was like an invisible string that could tie strangers together, creating a warm
community. She remembered the first time she had felt this connection: at six years old, waiting for
the bus with her mom on a hot, boring day. Then a cheerful tune came from a store loudspeaker
—— a song about a girl and her dreams:
“Dreams of sunshine and fields of gold,
Where the heart is never old,
Singing songs that never end,
In a world that's my best friend ...”
Without thinking, Mary sang along —— her voice soft and gentle at first, like a whisper
carried on the gentle wind, which gradually growing stronger and more confident. The melody was
simple yet engaging. Time passed without her noticing. When the bus arrived, passengers smiled; an
old man beat his walking stick to the beat. As the doors closed, everyone was humming. Mom
whispered to her,“You just lifted all our spirits.” Nothing seemed better than music for calming a
restless heart, and Mary remembered that.
After boarding the plane, the passengers were told of another weather delay —— at least
another 45 minutes. The cabin(机舱) grew tense with restless movements and complaints.
Then a sudden cry cut through the air. Across the aisle(通道) to Mary's left, a tiny girl, barely
three years old, began to cry. Her mother tried everything —— rocking her, offering snacks, water,
toys —— but nothing worked. The child's face was wet with tears, her cries loud and broken.
Passengers shifted uncomfortably in their seats as the crying filled the cabin.

Mary hesitated for a moment, and then turned to her mom,

Less Screen, More Life
Nowadays, It's common to see teenagers glued to their phones— scrolling, gaming, or
mindlessly checking social media. We' re so absorbed in screens that we lose touch with the
people around us.
Digital minimalism changed me. I started seeing the world directly— feeling the
sun, reading books, having actual conversations. Without my phone buzzing, I got more done
and picked up old hobbies like drawing and guitar. Life, I learned, happens beyond the screen.
So here's my call: put your phone aside. Step outside, connect with others, and enjoy life
beyond the screen. You won't regret it.

参考范文
Mary hesitated for a moment, and then turned to her mom.“Can I sing for the baby ”Mom
smiled and nodded. Encouraged, Mary gently asked the baby's mother the same question.
Exhausted, the mother gave a grateful nod. Mary took a deep breath and began to sing. Her voice
started soft and gentle, like a whisper on the wind, then gradually grew louder and stronger. The
song was simple but sweet—— about sunshine and dreams, easy to follow.
Slowly, the baby's cries faded. Her little body relaxed as Mary's gentle voice filled the cabin.
The simple melody seemed to cast a calming spell. With the baby quiet and the air filled with her
gentle voice, the other restless passengers also began to settle down, drawn in by the soothing
tune. The mother's tense expression softened, and she gave Mary a grateful smile. As the song
came to an end, everyone cheered and clapped, turning a long, frustrating delay into a moment of
music and warmth. Mary's mom leaned in and whispered,“You did it again—— lifting all our
spirits.”

Text 1
W: My brother's family is coming to visit next week, and I planned to clean the entire house this
weekend. But now, I'm feeling ill.
M: That's unfortunate, but you can't argue with your health.
W: You' re right. I' ll just have to take it easy before they arrive.
Text 2
W: You and your wife are still so in love, even after 50 years. What are your tips
M: The key is remembering that your relationship matters more than anything else. For example,
making money is great, but why bother if you have no one to share it with
Text 3
M: Alice, can I borrow that library book you checked out
W: Sure, John. But it's due back pretty soon. Could you take it back to the library for me,once
you' re done with it I don't want to get charged for being late.
M: No problem.
Text 4
W: Are you glad you got a dog
M: Definitely. I mean, I wish there weren't always dog hair all over my house. But it's not as bad,
since I bought myself a cleaning robot. Plus, he needs long walks, which helps keep me active.
Text 5
M: So,I understand you saw the accident. Can you tell me what happened
W: The taxi was going much too fast as it approached the traffle lights. The light turned red,
and the driver dldn't have time to stop before the bns pulled out.
Text 6
M: It's the perfect day for a movie. Shall we go after school
W:I wish I could. But I promised I'd go to visit my grandmother. I'm going to take her to do
her food shopping.
M: Oh, that doesn't sound like much fun.
W:I don't mind. When I was younger, I used to think it was boring. But now, I really love to
be around her. She worked as a hospital nurse for most of her life, so she has some really
interesting stories. And she tells me about my family. It's really nice.
Text 7
M: What do you want to do tonight We really need to do something to treat ourselves after
such a busy week!
W:I don't know. I don't have the energy for dancing or anything like that. We could go out
for dinner.
M: Hmm... It's probably too late to book a table. Why don't we try that board game café in
town They have hundreds of board games to choose from and you can buy snacks and
drinks while you play.
W: That sounds fun! But there aren't many board games for two.
M: Hmm... maybe not. But we could ask Vicky and Mike to come with us. I' ll text them
now.
W: That's nice. They are good players.
Text 8
W: Good morning! Ready for another day at school
M: Not really! I was up late last night finishing my book report. I'm glad you' re here. Now,I
don't need to worry about missing our stop while sleeping here.
W: Ha-ha! Here. Check the news with me. That will keep you awake.
M: On Welbo No thanks. I prefer the old-fashioned TV news.
W: Really Why
M:I just think it's more balanced. It's all too easy to get into an“information cocoon” online.
W:A“cocoon” isn't that the little home a bug makes when it's turning into a butterfly
M: Exactly. Social media programs present you with information they think you' ll like.In
terms of the news, that means you won't often see stories that disagree with what you
already believe.
W: Right, I see. And that's why it's called a“cocoon”, because it's like hiding yourself away
in a soft, comfortable place.
M: Exactly!
W: I see. That's a good point!

W: Everything alright, Rob
M: Oh…not really. I'm having a few friendship problems.
W: Do you want to talk about it
M: Well, Matt and I have been best friends since we were five.
W: Wow That's so much longer than I' ve known you guys. So, you' ve been friends for
25years
M: Yeah! We left home together and even went to the same college. He has always been
there for me. But ever since he was laid off from his previous job three months ago, he has
become so negative. It seems he has lost all his passion for things he ever loved.
W: Hmm... That's terrible.
M: It's really getting me down. My sister, Clara, says I should start avoiding him, but I'd feel
awful about doing that.
W: No, you can't do that. It's hard to be around someone who is negative. But he's your
friend. You could take him into nature to help him get rid of his negative feelings. And you
can hang around with other friends who make you happy sometimes.
M: Like you! Thanks, Jenny.

W: Welcome to the theater club. I'm Teresa, your new club president, and I'm excited to
announce that we have chosen our autumn show. We are going to perform Liam Pierce's
TheNew Sky! It's a funny, heartwarming story of a group of theater-loving women who
decide to perform an all-female version of William Shakespeare's play, while all the men are
away fighting in World War II. We' ll be looking for six girls to play the female parts, ranging
from young women to old ladies. There are also a couple of male parts:Alexander Ford, the
young stage manager, and Mr. White, the old theater owner who constantly makes trouble
for our heroines on purpose! The original play was set in theU. S., but our writers decided to
move the action to Australia, so we could use our own accents. There are passages of
Shakespeare throughout the play, for which we' ll use British accents. Tryouts are on Friday.
You' ll be asked to read a scene from the play, as well as perform a short Shakespeare
speech. You won't need to sing at the tryouts, but please be aware that there is a small
amount of singing required in the show. I hope to see you all there!
