Sarah often helped out at her dad’s restaurant, but today she felt different—she was given the job of serving customers. She was excited yet nervous, as she carefully carried a salad to Table 6.
The moment she reached the table, her excitement went away. Kate, the most popular girl in her school, was sitting there, surrounded by her friends.
Sarah’s mind raced back to the times when Kate had made fun of her. Fear and shyness overwhelmed (淹没) her. She quickly hid behind the front desk to avoid being seen.
Sarah was a hard-working straight-A student, but among her wealthy classmates, she often felt like an outsider. She was worried that working in the restaurant would make them laugh at her more. When her dad found her hiding, she was at a loss for words. He could see she was upset and kindly told her to take a break.
Back in the kitchen, Sarah felt terrible. She thought she had let her dad down. Just then, Mia, one of her classmates, entered the kitchen. To Sarah’s surprise, Mia gave her a big hug and said, “Hey, Sarah, who cares what Kate says I don’t think there’s anything to be ashamed (羞愧) of being a e on, let’s do the ‘crab dance’ together!” These kind words were like a ray of sunshine, giving her the strength to face the situation.
Sarah took a deep breath and returned to the dining area. She walked up to Kate’s table with the menu. As expected, Kate started to make fun of her. But this time, Sarah didn’t let it get to her. When Kate laughed, “Wait, you work here ” Sarah answered with a smile, “Yeah, and I’m great at it.” Then, she and Mia started doing a silly “crab dance”. They waved their arms and legs in a funny way, and soon, everyone at the table was laughing, including Kate.
As Sarah walked back to the kitchen, she realized she no longer felt embarrassed (尴尬的). It didn’t matter if Kate liked the restaurant or not. While many people see chores as necessary pains, there are science-based reasons to change your thoughts about chores. It turns out that doing chores is not always in the ways that you might think.
As researchers state here in a study, doing tasks which don’t need a lot of effort allows the mind to float around where it will. Your mind gets a break and allows you to consider old problems with new eyes. In fact, effortless tasks create more great ideas than difficult tasks or just resting. So, doing chores can lead to creative problem-solving.
Chores are exercise snacks for health. The phrase “exercise snacks” refers to small, even tiny, pieces of physical activity, such as standing for a few minutes after sitting for a while. Taking a two-minute walk, or doing a chore like sweeping up the kitchen. Researchers have studied the effects of exercise snacks ranging (范围) from 30 seconds, like walking up a flight of stairs, to 10 minutes, like washing dishes. Some of the health effects include improved memory, reduced risk of some serious diseases, and longer life.
Chores are related to our mental (心理的) pleting chores increases (增长) your sense of self-efficacy, known as a person’s belief that they have the ability and skills to reach their goals. Self-efficacy, which was first developed by Professor Albert Bandura in the 1970s, has been shown to increase confidence, low self-efficacy is connected with worries, sadness and hopelessness, while higher self-efficacy is connected with life satisfaction, self-confidence, social connection and growth mindset.
Doing chores can reduce stress. A small study from Florida State University explored whether the chore of dish washing could reduce stress. Using a group of 51 students, they discovered that dishwashers who were asked to be mindful when washing dishes focusing on the smell of the soap, the warmth of the water, and the feel of the dishes— reported a decrease in nervousness by 27 percent and an increase in mental inspiration by 25 percent. Chores that reduce the mess can also reduce stress.
So if you’ve been thinking about cleaning out that junk drawer, do it. You’ll receive more.

35.What’s the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage
A.To explain why most people hate doing chores and offer ways to make chores less tiring.
B.To introduce the science-supported advantages of doing chores and encourage people to do chores.

Weighing about three pounds, the human brain uses the most energy in the body and is larger than the brains of most other animals.
The reason Our brain evolved (进化) to deal with large social networks. So humans, it seems, are built to socialize. Three-quarters of the brain is the neocortex, an area for cognitive functions (认知功能) like memory, language and problem-solving. These abilities enable people to get along with their families, friends, and sports teams and build a wide social network.
But keeping these relationships requires a lot of mental effort. Because of this, there is a limit (限度) to how many close relationships we can keep, according to British psychologist Robin Dunbar.
To understand these limits, Dunbar studied large primates (灵长类动物) and found that the bigger the neocortex, the larger the social group. Based on his studies of over 30 primate species, he estimated (估计) that humans can have social groups of around 150 people.
He compared human relationships to ripples (涟漪) on a pond. The innermost circle is just about five people—friends or family members—that you feel emotionally closest to. Then comes a layer with 10 additional good friends you often see. “About 60% of your social attention goes to these 15 people,” Dunbar said. Farther out is what he calls your “weekend party group” of 50 people, including the 15 that you see regularly. Finally, the outer layer brings the total to 150 people, including another 100 you would invite to your once-in-a-lifetime big events.
He estimates that there are about 350 people you know in addition to your 150 close friends. Beyond that, most of us can recognize another 1,000 people by sight—for example, famous people—but they might not recognize you.
“Those outer layers beyond 150 are kind of one-way relationships,” Dunbar said. “But the key to the 150 and the layers within is that they are reciprocated. Unlike one-sided relationships of the outer circles, these close connections require each other’s care and effort.”
Other researchers think the number is even bigger. In the time of social media, it seems possible to go beyond 150 people. But Dunbar believes online communication doesn’t change the size of our close networks. “It’s hard to get real emotional support from someone you can’t physically hug,” he says, “It’s just not the same.”
36.According to Dunbar, the size of large primates’ social networks depends on ________.
A.their memory B.the size of the neocortex
C.the need to socialize D.their intelligence
37.What can we learn from the passage
A.The number of people we see regularly is around 15.
B.Most primates can recognize 1,000 of their kind by sight.
C.The innermost circle takes up 60% of people’s social attention.
D.Social media increases the size of the social network by 150 people.
38.The underlined sentence in Paragraph 7 “they are reciprocated” probably means ________.
A.their relationships progress over time
B.their relationships are easy to manage
C.they are similar to each other in many ways
D.they both work to keep the relationship going
39.Which would be the best title for the passage
A.The Neocortex: A Key Area in Your Brain
B.The Size of Our Social Networks Is Limited
C.Building Social Connections with More Effort
D.Emotional Support Matters in Human Relationships

Fun in the Run
The marathon (马拉松) is very popular all over the world. In China, for the first six months of this year, there were 133 marathons across the country.
Teenagers also join marathons. Xu Qian, a 15-year-old boy from Suqian, Jiangsu, loves running. He got first place in the 5-kilometer Happy Run of the Suqian Marathon held on April 2. For Xu, the race meant months of training and preparation. He runs about 30 to 40 kilometers in local stadiums each week before the run.
“Unlike the 800-meter run at school, a marathon is about a runner’s endurance (耐力) and psychological quality (心理素质),” he said.
When he felt tired during the race, he told himself not to give up. “In long-distance running, the only opponent(对手) you have to beat is yourself,” Xu added.
Kindness from the people around plays a big part in helping runners get to the finish line. Li Zhouzi from Shanxi joined a 3-kilometer Kid Run of the Berlin Marathon in Germany in 2019 when she was 10. The support from the people cheering along the course really encouraged her.
“When things were hard, people around cheered me on. Even if it was just the words, keep it up,” Li said.
She believes that running a marathon is about staying focused on the final goal, not the suffering along the way. “Our life is also a marathon,” Li said.
40.How long does Xu Qian run each week to get ready for the race
41.According to Xu Qian, who do you have to beat in long-distance running
