As I was about to go back to my room, my mom shouted, “Emma, you’ve got letters.” I hurried downstairs and saw a small envelope (信封) waiting for me on the table. It was from my pen pal, Sarah, who lives in San Francisco. We met online through a group for book lovers, and after hearing others talk about how fun it was to have a pen pal, we decided to try writing letters to each other.
In her first letter to me, she wrote, “The idea of having a pen pal seems so wonderful to me. While I like the conveniences (便捷) of the modern world, some old traditions like writing letters have a beauty that never goes away.”
I agree with her. My love for writing letters by hand wasn’t new. I’ve always enjoyed writing personal letters to friends. When I finished high school, I even wrote to each of my friends, wishing them well as we went to different places. But my communication with Sarah felt different. We were strangers getting to know each other through letters.
Sarah told me that she loves making cakes and that her favorite thing to make is chocolate chip cookies. She also said she enjoys watching sunsets by the beach and that she thinks they’re the most peaceful moments of her day. From her letters, I learned a lot about San Francisco, too. In return, I shared stories about my life in Boston. I also told her about my favorite season, fall, and how the trees turn red and orange colors.
Writing to Sarah has become my favorite hobby. While texting or sending emails is quick, there’s something special about opening a handwritten letter. The careful choice of words and the care behind each small part make it different. I look forward to every envelope that arrives, knowing it carries a bit of Sarah’s world into mine.

Most people have an inner (内心的) voice. What you say to yourself, and how you say it, influences how you think, feel and behave, so it’s worth paying attention to it.
Your inner voice is always with you. You might notice it when you make a mistake, when you try something new, or when you solve a problem. Sometimes it sounds kind but at other times it can sound rude or scared. Young people’s coach Maria Evans says it should be treated with care and kindness. “It gets scared when you think about doing something that feels hard. Often all it needs is to be listened to and spoken to with love and reassurance.”
Your inner voice has an influence on you because you already pay attention to it. So what you say to yourself, and what you hear, sinks in. If you keep telling yourself you can’t do math or you’re not good at making friends or you’re not creative, over time you’ll believe what your inner voice is saying. When you talk to yourself like “I’ve got to tidy my room”, it makes the task feel harder. If instead you say, “I choose to tidy my room, and then I’ll be able to find the books I want easily,” it’s more positive. You’re telling yourself how you’ll get an advantage.
Noticing what your inner voice says and choosing to talk encouragingly to yourself can help you feel more confident. For example, when you get things wrong, tell yourself it’s okay and you’ll learn for next time. Or when you do something challenging, congratulate yourself for being brave and having a try. If you’re not sure what to say, imagine you’re talking to your best friends and trying to support and help them inside your head.
33.Why should you pay attention to your inner voice
A.It is always inside your head. B.It is different from your action.
C.It influences your thoughts and behavior. D.It helps you try something new and hard.
34.What does the underlined word “reassurance” in Paragraph 2 mean
A.pride B.comfort C.worries D.rudeness
35.What is an example of positive inner voice
A.“I’ve got to tidy my room.” B.“It’s hard to have a try.”
C.“It’s okay to make mistakes.” D.“I have to find the books.”
D
A reader wrote in to say that she was feeling lonely at break (休息) because her best friend wasn’t around. Here’s our advice to all kids who feel left out (受冷落) sometimes.
It’s hard when the best friend isn’t around—maybe because she moved to a different school or a different class. You may feel lonely at break or lunchtime. You want to have new friends, but how do you make them Maybe it seems like everybody else already has their friends. But remember, there’s always room for more friends.
Start by looking around your classroom—think about which kids you’d like to play with at break. Look for chances to say hi to them, smile, and be friendly. Offer to share something or express your appreciation (欣赏) to them. Invite someone to play with you or say “Do you want to sit here ” in the lunchroom. When you’re at break, walk over to kids you want to play with, act politely, and say “Hi, can I play, too ” or just join in.
If you have trouble doing this or if you’re feeling nervous, ask your teacher to help you make new friends. Teachers are usually pretty good at matching up friends. The best way to make friends is to be a friend. Be kind, be friendly, share, say nice things, offer to help—and pretty soon, you’ll have one, or two, or even more new friends.
You might still miss that special best friend. But when you see each other, you can share something you didn’t have before he or she left. You can introduce him or her to your new friends!

She started with her own bedroom and then moved on to her brothers’ and sisters’.
After years of practice, Marie found KonMari Method, her special way to simplify (使简化) and organize homes. Now she runs a successful business in Tokyo. Marie wrote four books on organizing.
