A recent Chinese short drama, suspected of unauthorized use of artificial intelligence (AI) to replicate individuals’ facial features, outfits and makeup, has triggered widespread public outcry and intense discussions, which highlights the urgent need to balance technological advancement with the protection of personal rights and interests.
In late March, a number of bloggers, including traditional Chinese attire enthusiasts and professional models, publicly accused the popular AI-generated series Peach Blossom Hairpin of infringing on their legitimate rights. They claimed that the drama’s creators had copied their unique facial characteristics, carefully designed outfits and distinctive makeup styles without prior consent to create roles, which were then widely disseminated on various short-video platforms.
By the time the controversy erupted, the drama had already garnered more than 40 million views on Hongguo, a well-known micro-drama platform. In response to the public anger and relevant regulations, Hongguo promptly removed the series and announced a 15-day suspension of new content uploads, stating that the drama’s creator failed to provide sufficient proof to demonstrate compliance with the rules governing facial imagery use. The platform also pledged to strengthen its content review mechanism, upgrade verification technologies and improve authorization procedures to prevent similar incidents.
Legal experts emphasize that even if the producer denies using others’ photos as templates for AI generation, such behaviors may still constitute infringement. Zhao Zhanling, a professional lawyer, pointed out that under China’s Civil Code, if an AI-generated face is capable of making the public associate it with a specific individual, it will likely violate that person’s portrait rights. Relevant court cases have further confirmed this principle: an actress once won a lawsuit against two companies that misused her images through AI face-swapping in a short drama, and a voice-over artist also obtained compensation for unauthorized AI voice imitation.
Authorities and industry organizations have also taken corresponding measures to address the issue, while experts remind ordinary people to preserve evidence in a timely manner when encountering such infringements and call for a more sound legal framework to regulate AI applications in creative fields.

Wake up early enough and, depending on where you live, you’ll likely hear a pleasant chorus of birds chirping their tiny hearts out. This amazing avian arrangement is instinctual behavior for birds, but why 1 According to the Woodland Trust, this early singing is known as the dawn chorus, and it can start as early as 4 am and last for several hours. Birds do it to attract mates and warn other birds to avoid their turf. One theory as to why they opt for the wee hours to communicate these important messages is because the low visibility makes it hard to do other bird activities, like foraging. 2 Keeping their activity level low, they opt to sing instead.
Another theory argues that birds use the morning vocals to project an image of strength. By singing with fervor, they’re letting other birds know they survived the night—no guarantee in nature—and would make for an excellent mate. 3
Like a good recording studio, the early morning hours also allow birds to transmit a clear tune thanks to the cooler, drier air. 4 Because birds have distinctive chirps, that clarity helps them be more easily identified by birds within listening distance.
There used to be a prevailing theory that birds sang so much in the mornings because the sounds could travel greater distances due to less atmospheric turbulence, but it was disproven by researchers at the University of Western Ontario in 2003. They played recordings of sparrows at dawn and midday. The songs didn’t travel farther, but they were more consistent. 5 Because birds only have so much energy to belt one out, singing when they stand the best chance of being heard makes sense. For a bird, an early morning session is like having the perfect acoustic environment for their performance.
Actually, there are several theories explaining this fascinating behavior.
This consistency is exactly what makes their morning songs so effective.
With little food-seeking possible, singing becomes their most practical choice.
This display of strength and survival is exactly what potential mates look for.
Such clear sound transmission helps them communicate more efficiently.
Birds prefer to sing in the morning to protect themselves from enemies.
G. The air conditions in the early morning are different from those in the daytime.

根据第一段最后一句可知, “…which highlights the urgent need to balance technological advancement with the protection of personal rights and interests.”
By the time the controversy erupted, the drama had already garnered more than 40 million views…
根据第四段第二句:…if an AI-generated face is capable of making the public associate it with a specific individual, it will likely violate that person’s portrait rights. A 错误:原文说 “even if the producer denies…”,制作人并未承认。
