12. Reflect on your learning experience of this unit.
(1) Can you name different natural disasters and talk about their impacts
(2) Can you describe people’s actions before, during, and after a natural disaster
Reflecting
There are many types of natural disasters, such as earthquakes, typhoons, floods, wildfires, and so
on. These disasters have serious impacts on people and the world around us. For example,
earthquakes can destroy buildings and roads, cause injuries, and make people homeless.
For example, before the wildfire took place, my family were hiking in the mountains. We noticed
the smoke and decided to leave right away. While we were running down the path, the thick smoke
was all around us, so we tried not to breathe it in. After we reached safety, we checked on each other
and called for help.
(3) Can you talk about what you were doing during an event in the past
(4) How should we prepare for and stay safe in bad weather or natural disasters
Reflecting
To talk about what you were doing during an event in the past, we use the past continuous tense (was / were + v. -ing).
This tense helps us describe actions that were in progress when another event happened.
Example: When the rainstorm started, I was doing my homework. Suddenly, I heard heavy rain beating against
the window. The sky was turning dark, and the wind was blowing hard. My little sister was sleeping, so I closed
the window quietly and turned on the light. We stayed inside safely until the rain stopped.
We can do lots of things to prepare for bad weather or natural disasters and keep ourselves safe. First, we could
store food and water. Second, we should follow official news and pay attention to weather or disaster reports.
Also, we could learn basic safety skills by taking training classes. Finally, we should stay indoors and avoid
travelling when a natural disaster happens.
13. Express your views on nature.
What do you think of nature
Nature can ___________________________________________________.
However, sometimes it ___________________________________________.
Therefore, we must ________________ nature so that we can live in harmony with her.
provide us with beautiful scenery, delicious food, and so on
