T:Let's go through the questions quickly. Number one, when and where did the story happen? Can you use one word to summarize the question? S: Setting. T:Number two, who are the characters in the story? How about this question? Use one word to summarize it . S:Characters. T:How about question three to question six? What are these questions about? S:Plot. T:Actually, setting ,characters and plot, they are the three elements of a novel. T:Now you will be given ten minutes to find out the answers to these questions. Okay, time's up. Let’s check your answers one by one. T:1.When and where did the story happen? S:The short story is set outside a shop in New York on a cold, dark night. T:2.Who are the characters in the story? S:The characters are a policeman, a man named Bob and Jimmy Wells. T:3.Why did they separate twenty years ago? S:Bob was to start for the west to make his fortune, but he couldn't have dragged Jimmy out of New York. T:What kind of persons are they? Please use some adjectives to describe them. S:According to the answer, we know Bob was adventurous or ambitious while Jimmy was conservative or stubborn. T:4.What promise did they make at that time? S:They agreed that they would meet there again exactly twenty years from the date and the time, no matter what their conditions might be or what distance they might have to go. T:5.Did they keep in touch during the twenty years? S:For a time they corresponded, but after a year or two, they lost track of each other. T:6.Would Jimmy come to meet Bob? Why or why not? S:Yes, he would. Because Bob said “I know he will meet me here if he's alive, for he always was the truest ,staunchest old chap in the world. /No,he wouldn’t. Because they lost track of each other. T:Well, both answers are correct. So what kind of persons are they? Both of them are determined, loyal, faithful, staunch, devoted, or true. T:1. What does the note tell you about the ending of the story? S:Jimmy was the policeman. He turned up as they agreed twenty years earlier, but he decided to fulfill his duty and have Bob arrested. T:2. Do you think that Jimmy did the right thing? Why or why not? S:Jimmy was faced with the dilemma of friendship and justice. Although he treasured their sincere friendship a lot, he chose to devote to his duty and defend the law in the end. T:3.Do you like this ending? Give your reasons. T:The answer to this question is open. In my opinion, I like this surprise ending or “O.Henry-style ending” . O.Henry’s stories are best known for their twists or surprise endings. In these endings, there will be a sudden twist that results in an unexpected change, thus creating an unexpected yet understandable result.
