During the Southern and Northern Dynasties(南北朝)，there was a famous painter called Zhang
Sengyou.He was very good at painting animals,especially dragons,on walls.One day,he paid a
visit to a temple in ancient Nanjing.
Out of interest,he painted four dragons on the wall,but gave none of them eyes.On seeing the
wall paintings,the onlookers felt that it was really strange.So they asked the painter Zhang why he
didn't paint the eyes for the dragons.
He answered seriously,"Eyes are very important for dragons.If the eyes were painted on the
dragons,they would fly away."However,nobody believed what he said.To show his words,Zhang
Sengyou took up his brush and added the eyes to two of the dragons.As soon as he finished the work,the
two dragons flew into the sky,while the other two dragons with eyes unpainted were still on the wall.
Nowadays,people use this Chinese idiom to tell us that when writing an article or
making a speech,we should get the main ideas.On the other hand,it means that if we add some key
words to an article or a speech,it will become much better.
