What emotion is this
These emotions are what we often feel. Today,we’ll talk about problems that make us upset and how to solve them!
Warming-up
My small problems
.
...I left my notebook at home and I can’t take notes in class.
...my favorite soccer game was canceled because of the rain.
...I had a fight with my sister last night and we haven’t talked yet.
...I feel nervous about the math exam tomorrow.
...no one wanted to be my partner for the group project.
...my pet cat ran away this morning and I’m really sad.
how to solve them
Left notebook at home
Borrow a piece of paper from your classmate to take notes first, then copy the notes from them after class. You can also send a message to your parents to help bring it if they’re free.
how to solve them
Soccer game canceled
Watch a soccer highlight video with friends, or plan to play soccer together when the weather gets better.
how to solve them
Fought with sister
Say “I’m sorry” first (it’s not embarrassing), or leave a small gift (like her favorite candy) with a note to start talking again.
how to solve them
Nervous about math exam
Review the key knowledge (like formulas) for 20 minutes, then do 1-2 easy exercises to build confidence. Ask your teacher for help with the parts you don’t understand.
how to solve them
No group project partner
Take the initiative to ask a classmate (e.g., “Can I join your group ”), or ask the teacher to help arrange a partner.
how to solve them
Pet cat ran away
Ask your neighbors for help to look for it, stick “Lost Cat” notes (with the cat’s photo) around the community, and call its name softly in the places it usually goes.
4a
Think about a problem that makes you worried or upset. Write it on a piece of paper. Do not include your name.
Some teenage problems
too much stress
poor relationships
worries about the future
school bullying
For example:
I feel stressed about exams although I study hard.
You can use “I... although...”.
I worry about the future although I study hard.
4b
Collect all the pieces of paper and put them in a box.
Let’s mix all the problems—they’re all “secret worries” now!
This box is our “Worry Box”—put your paper in it, and we’ll mix all the problems!
Now all problems are “mystery problems”.
Let’s see what we’ll get in 4c!
4c
Work in groups. Take one piece of paper from the box each time. Discuss the problem and provide your suggestions.
Problem Suggestion
Sample
Imagine taking a piece of paper like the following one out of the box. Discuss the question and give your own suggestions.
Suggestion1:You can join a hobby club. When you do activities together, you’ll have the same topics to talk about so that it’s easier to start a conversation.
Suggestion2:You could start with small talk with your deskmate first. Keep doing this until you feel more comfortable talking to others.
4d
Present the problem and your suggestions to the class.
The problem our group received is: "I find it hard to make friends.“ Here are some of our suggestions for this friend. First, you can join a sports club. If you are afraid to talk to others, you could focus on the sport first. You can work together with a team and get to know more people later. Second, you could...
Use the problem your group received and the suggestions you came up with to finish this prompt card.

Second, you could start with small talk with your deskmate first. Keep doing this until you feel more comfortable talking to others. Third, you can smile at people when you see them. A warm smile is a friendly way to let others know you’re nice.
Finally, if you feel nervous while talking, you can take a slow breath first. It will help you relax so that you can talk more smoothly.
