Power of Public Speaking has partnered with ASI Innovation Labs to integrate artificial intelligence into the Pops Classroom platform for improving public speaking skills. The first project is the Pops Advisor which provides an automatic evaluation of students’ video presentations with visual feedback.
The Advisor offers on-demand comments to students practicing public speaking from anywhere. This flexibility benefits instructors, who can be as hands-on or hands-off during practice. While students can operate autonomously with the tool, instructors can also choose to keep track of students’ progress.
Criteria
Using machine learning models, the Pops Advisor analyzes the following criteria:
Delivery Introduction Body Conclusion
Vocal Style Vocal Quality Vocal Filler Eye Contact Body Language Credibility Attention Central Idea Preview Connective Support Language Connective Credibility Organization Signaling Ending Summary Memorable Ending Credibility
Feedback
The presenter receives feedback on the above four categories. And this feedback is given in the following formats:
Recommendations
To provide presenters with valuable feedback for the next practice, recommendations focus on specific aspects needing improvement. For instance, the recommendation can be “Your message is clear, but be sure you are grabbing your audience’s attention in your introduction to ensure they are listening.”
Speech Metrics (指标)
Useful speech metrics serve as quantitative descriptors on several aspects of the presentation including number of words, total presentation time, speaking rate and vocal fillers percentage.
Pops Advisor can be used in any classroom setting where students are presenting, particularly in the Basic Public Speaking Course. When you are considering what can be achieved by your students toward skill development in a single school semester, Advisor increases the overall development.

I’ve been in an 18-year love-hate relationship with a black walnut tree.
It’s a special tree. In late September or early October, falling fruits as hard as baseballs threaten the skulls (头骨) of people nearby. Umbrellas in the yard are a must while dining in early August, and as for me, I wear my bike helmet while working in the garden.
The black walnut also gives off a chemical substance as a competitive strategy. It’s poisonous to several plants. There have been many new plants that I brought home with hopes that maybe the black walnut would accept them, but they died.
What does work are native plants that naturally grow in the area. Native plants are important since they attract beneficial pollinators (传粉者) like birds, bees and butterflies and contribute to a healthy and biodiverse environment. Native plants for this area are generally easy to grow, so they experience less stress.
Have I thought of moving this giant pain out of my tiny backyard Yes, however, getting rid of this tree standing at 50 feet with an 87-inch trunk is next to impossible. It’s also protected under the law. Rightfully so. Trees are important to the urban forest and for all of those that inhabit it.
Sometimes I think about my life without the black walnut. I can’t imagine a spring without the birds who arrive every year and loudly sing their songs before the sun rises. I’d miss falling asleep on lazy weekend afternoons as I look up into its leaves.
Every spring, I wonder what the season holds: What are the chances of being knocked unconscious while barbecuing Like any good relationship, I’ll never be pleased. I’m stuck with this tree, so I’ll listen to its needs and give it the space it requires. In return, my walnut tree offers cover to wildlife and a reminder to me.
24. Why does the author wear a bike helmet while working in the garden
A. To protect the injured skull. B. To avoid being hit by the nuts.
C. To prevent herself from sunburn. D. To protect herself from falling over.
25. What is the tree’s survival strategy
A. It accepts new plant varieties. B. It attracts beneficial pollinators.
C. It lets out poison to drive away pests. D. It produces a chemical deadly to some plants.
26. What is the writer’s attitude towards the walnut tree
A. Pleased. B. Conflicted. C. Curious. D. Disapproving.
27. The author most probably got a reminder from the tree that ________.
A. It’s better to accept than to resist B. It’s better to act than to think
C. It’s better to compete than to give up. D. It’s better to protect than to destroy.
C
Many children try to make their parents proud. But in some families, a child’s success is always “on show”. Parents want praise from others, and the child may feel like a performer, not a person.
The term “peacock parenting” comes from the idea of being “as proud as a peacock”. Here it means a self-centered style of parenting. A peacock parent may show off a “perfect family” in public, yet criticise the child behind closed doors when the child fails to meet high expectations. Over time, the child may learn that love is conditional. They may hide their real feelings, stop exploring their own interests, and start to believe, “I am not worthy.”
Experts describe three common signs. The first is psychological control. When the child sets a boundary or feels upset, the parent may say, “You’re too sensitive,” and turn the blame back onto the child. This often creates a sense of guilt. The second is unpredictable mood swings. The parent can be warm one day and cold the next, making the child feel like they are “walking on eggshells”. In adulthood, this may lead to people-pleasing and weak boundaries. The third is role reversal. Some parents fail to provide proper care and attention, or even expect their child to look after them emotionally or physically. As a result, the child may grow up too fast and miss out on a normal childhood.
Healing takes time, but it is possible. The first step is to be kinder to yourself and reconnect with your own interests. Supportive friends, groups, or professional help can provide the care that was previously missing. Clear boundaries can also make a relationship safer, and if contact continues to cause harm, limiting contact may be necessary. After all, there are many places to find warmth, and not all of them are under a parent’s roof.
28. What is the purpose of paragraph 1
A. To raise an issue. B. To describe a study.
C. To explain the causes. D. To offer the solutions.
29. What does “peacock parenting” in paragraph 2 mainly focus on
A. Public approval. B. Unconditional love. C. Independent growth. D. Honest self-expression.
30. Which sign best matches “role reversal” in paragraph 3
A. The parent praises the child in public. B. The child tries to win others’ approval.
C. The parent relies on the child for support. D. The child avoids setting any boundaries.
31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Distance ensures safety. B. Self-care is the final step.
C. healing requires parental effort. D. Support exists beyond the family.
D
Amid mounting global plastic pollution — a crisis worsened by 400 million tons of annual waste, 46% of which are single-use PET plastics — researchers have engineered PETase Plus, a bioengineered enzyme (酶) capable of degrading PET polymers (聚合物) 90% faster than natural enzymes. Published in Nature Biotechnology, this breakthrough, achieved through multinational cooperation, could redefine waste management by transforming non-recyclable plastics into reusable raw materials. Yet, its significance extends far beyond laboratories, sparking heated debates among scientists, policymakers, and environmentalists.
Unlike conventional recycling, which demands energy-intensive processes (exceeding 250℃) to melt plastics and produces useless materials, PETase Plus operates under mild conditions. By degrading PET’s molecular bonds, it breaks down plastics into base components that can be re-integrated into high-quality products or even biofuels. According to Dr. Liam Harper, lead author of the study, “This method cuts energy consumption by 60% and carbon emissions by 80%, offering industries a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative to traditional methods.”
However, critics caution against unchecked optimism. While PETase Plus excels in controlled lab environments, applying it for industrial or environmental use risks unintended ecological harm. Dr. Emily Carter, a biochemist, warns, “Engineered enzymes released into landfills or oceans might also degrade natural polymers, destabilizing soil structures or marine ecosystems. Without proper restrictions, the solution to plastic waste could become an ecological disaster.”
Ethical conflicts further complicate its adoption. Environmental advocates insist plastic manufacturers — responsible for 70% of global PET production — should fund large-scale application of the technology. However, industry leaders argue that governments must provide financial support to encourage innovation. Meanwhile, developing nations, where waste management system is underdeveloped, view PETase Plus as a potential lifeline, though fears spread that wealthy countries might not share the technology.
As research advances, PETase Plus is facing a challenge: a scientific success shadowed by ethical and ecological dilemmas. Its success relies not merely on biochemical efficiency but on multi-party cooperation to balance innovation with caring for our planet.
32. According to paragraph 2, what is one advantage of PETase Plus over traditional recycling methods
A. It reduces the cost by 60%.
B. It removes the need for industrial funding.
C. It produces biofuels straight from plastic waste.
D. It functions effectively at relatively low temperatures.
33. What concern do critics emphasize about PETase Plus
A. Its funding resource is still not clear. B. It may disturb natural ecosystems.
C. It requires expensive lab equipment. D. Its mechanism is not yet understood.
34. Why does the author quote Dr. Emily Carter
A. To stress the necessity for ecological regulations.
B. To question the enzyme’s degradation efficiency.
C. To advocate for industry-led innovation.
D. To highlight the technical limitations of PETase Plus.
35. What can be a possible result of the future application of PETase Plus
A. Ecological risks will be removed.
B. Governments will cease funding traditional recycling.
C. Ethical conflicts might prevent its widespread application.
D. Developing nations will reject the technology due to high costs.
The post-lunch History lesson with Mr. Davies had a distinct specific quality, the air thick with the warmth of thirty bodies and the deep voice of a detailed analysis of the Corn Laws. The battlefield of attention had been lost, and sleep was the silent victor, claiming its subjects one by one in a series of strategical positions.
Directly in front of Mr. Davies’s desk sat Caleb, a master of the “Upright Nap.” 36 His textbook was open, and his pen was even held loosely in hand. The only betrayal was the utter stillness of that pen and the slow, rhythmic dip of his head, followed by a sudden, barely perceptible jerk back to alertness.
Further back, Liam had perfected the “Prop and Drop.” He was supported entirely on his left elbow, his hand cradling his forehead, fingers splayed through his hair as if in deep concentration or frustration with the economic policies. 37 From the front, he looked like a diligent student struggling with complex material. From the side, his closed eyes and the soft, steady sigh of his breath told the true story.
Then there was the duo in the corner, Sarah and Ben, practitioners of the “Human Shield.” Sarah, sitting closer to the aisle, had created a defensive wall with her own body, bending forward over her desk to create a hidden sleep for Ben behind her. Ben was in the “Full-Surrender” position: head pillowed on his folded arms, face turned completely away from the light. 38
Mr. Davies, of course, was not entirely fooled. He was a veteran of this silent war. He continued his lecture, pacing slowly, his voice a steady river flowing around these islands of sleep. He knew that a sudden shout would startle them, but it would also shatter the fragile peace for the few students still fearlessly taking notes. 39 He would pause mid-sentence near a sleeper, or gently tap a finger joint on their desk as he passed, sending a ripple of subtle panic that would bring them swimming back to consciousness for a few precious minutes.
40 The clock ticked slowly towards the bell. In the quiet classroom, the only sounds were Mr. Davies’s monologue and the soft, rhythmic breathing of his sleeping troop, each lost in a dream far more irresistible than the price of corn.
A. For now, a restful ceasefire held.
B. Instead, he employed psychological warfare.
C. Their combined efforts turned the class into a silent, secret laboratory.
D. He woke with a jolt to the sound of the bell, his cheek sticky on the desk.
E. His posture was perfect, spine straight, chin slightly raised as if considering a profound point.
F. He was the most asleep, utterly committed to his escape, protected by the sacrificial snoozing of his friend.
G. His entire body was angled away from the teacher’s patrol route, a human fortress against inquiry.

The Scholarship Jacket
Each year, my school awarded a green and gold scholarship jacket to the top graduate with the highest grades over eight years. As a straight-A student since my first year, I was determined to win it. Raised by my grandparents on a small farm, money was always tight — we simply could not afford fees or trips for any sports events. I knew the sports jacket was out of my reach, so the scholarship jacket was my only chance.
However, one afternoon, I accidentally overheard my teachers arguing in the classroom. Mr. Smith was angrily defending my academic record, “Martha deserves the jacket!” Yet, Mr. Bonne responded calmly, “But Joan’s father is on the) Board. We could say it was a close tie and...” The rest of his words were drowned out by the pounding in my ears. I stood frozen, feeling my dream shatter in the face of cruel injustice.
The next day, the principal called me in. Avoiding eye contact, he awkwardly explained a new “policy” to me: the Board would charge fifteen dollars for the jacket this year. “If you can’t pay,” he declared, “it will go to the next one in line.” Shocked as I was, I refused to give in without a word. Mustering all my dignity, I replied, “I’ll speak to my grandpa and let you know tomorrow.”
Grandpa was working in the bean field when I found him. Voice shaky, I blurted out the news about the fifteen-dollar fee. “I have to take the money tomorrow, otherwise it’ll be given to someone else.”
Grandpa paused, straightened his weary back, and rested his chin on the hoe (锄头) handle. He gazed at the green shoots before turning to me. “What does a scholarship jacket mean ” he asked quietly.
“It means you’ve earned it by having the highest grades for eight years,” I answered without hesitation.
“Then if you pay for it, it’s not a scholarship jacket, is it ” Grandpa said, driving his hoe firmly into the soil. “Tell your principal I won’t pay.”
I walked back to the house and locked myself in the bathroom for a long time. I was angry with the Board for changing the rule; and I was angry with grandfather even though I knew he was right.

W: We are so pleased to have you on campus, sir. My fellow classmates and I can’t wait to hear about your trip to the moon.
M: Sure, and thank you for leading this question-and-answer period. So, the moon’s gravity (重力) is only 16% of the gravity we experience on the Earth. If you weigh 60 kilograms here, you’ll only weigh about 10 kilograms on the moon.
W: Unbelievable! How did walking around there feel
M: It felt more like jumping. If you can jump about half a meter high here, you could jump three meters on the moon.
W: Was that the most unforgettable part of your trip
M: Well, nothing can compare with seeing the Earth from 400,000 kilometers away. It’s amazing to see everything you know on a tiny blue ball from space.
W: That’ll make the trip worth it.
M: Yes. It took 16 days in total — with two days spent on the moon.
W: Thank you for sharing your story with us. Now, let’s take some questions from the crowd.

W: Hi, everyone. I’m Victoria, president of the town government, and a proud member of this community. I’m so honored to announce our next award winner. But before that, I want to say congratulations to the firefighters who have just received their medals. Now is our award for our town’s most giving person. Most mornings, you can find Daniel Gold walking along the beach while picking up rubbish. After that, Mr. Gold opens his cafe for customers while giving away free meals to those in need. After lunch, you can find Mr. Gold spending time with his grandchildren in the park. But above all the charity work Mr. Gold has done, he has inspired us all to be kinder and more generous. And he’s still inspiring us at 80 years old! I could go on for hours, but our award dinner will end in around 45 minutes. So, without further comment, here’s Daniel Gold, the winner of our Person of the Year honor.

D 33. B 34. A 35. C

E 37. G 38. F 39. B 40. A
36. 根据上文“Directly in front of Mr. Davies’s desk sat Caleb, a master of the “Upright Nap.”(在戴维斯先生的办公桌正前方坐着凯莱布,他可是“直立式打盹”的高手)”以及后文“His textbook was open, and his pen was even held loosely in hand. The only betrayal was the utter stillness of that pen and the slow, rhythmic dip of his head, followed by a sudden, barely perceptible jerk back to alertness.(他的课本摊开着,笔也随意地握在手中。
37. 根据上文“Further back, Liam had perfected the “Prop and Drop.” He was supported entirely on his left elbow, his hand cradling his forehead, fingers splayed through his hair as if in deep concentration or frustration with the economic policies.(再往后,利安已经熟练掌握了“支撑与下垂”的动作。他完全依靠左肘支撑着身体,一只手托着额头,手指像在梳理头发一样张开,仿佛正全神贯注地思考着什么,或者是在对某些经济政策感到极度不满)”以及后文“From the front, he looked like a diligent student struggling with complex material. From the side, his closed eyes and the soft, steady sigh of his breath told the true story.(从正面看,他看起来像一个努力学习、但又因学习内容复杂而感到吃力的学生。从侧面看,他紧闭的双眼以及那轻柔而平稳的呼吸声则揭示了真实的情况)”可知,前文介绍利安的“支撑垂头”睡姿——用左肘支撑、手托额头,后文提到“从正面看像认真学习,侧面才暴露闭眼睡觉”,需补充“躲避老师观察”的细节。故G选项“他的整个身体都偏离了老师的巡逻路线,像一座抵御询问的人类堡垒”符合语境,故选G。
38. 根据上文“Then there was the duo in the corner, Sarah and Ben, practitioners of the “Human Shield.” Sarah, sitting closer to the aisle, had created a defensive wall with her own body, bending forward over her desk to create a hidden sleep for Ben behind her. Ben was in the “Full-Surrender” position: head pillowed on his folded arms, face turned completely away from the light.(随后,在角落里的还有那对搭档,萨拉和本,他们是“人体盾牌”术的践行者。
Davies, of course, was not entirely fooled. He was a veteran of this silent war. He continued his lecture, pacing slowly, his voice a steady river flowing around these islands of sleep. He knew that a sudden shout would startle them, but it would also shatter the fragile peace for the few students still fearlessly taking notes.(戴维斯先生当然没有完全被蒙骗。
40. 根据后文“The clock ticked slowly towards the bell. In the quiet classroom, the only sounds were Mr. Davies’s monologue and the soft, rhythmic breathing of his sleeping troop, each lost in a dream far more irresistible than the price of corn.(时钟缓慢地滴答作响,临近铃声响起的时间了。在安静的教室里,唯一能听到的声音便是戴维斯先生的独白以及他那群熟睡学生轻柔而有节奏的呼吸声,每个人都沉浸在比玉米价格更难以抗拒的梦境之中)”可知,前文讲老师用温和方式应对睡觉学生,后文描述“时钟走向下课铃,教室只有老师讲课声和学生呼吸声”,需总结此时“老师与学生”的微妙平衡状态。故A选项“目前,一场平静的停火得以维持”符合语境,故选A。

Treasure Our Class Time
Recently, a concerning phenomenon has been observed in our classes: some students appear distracted, dozing off, or even using mobile phones, leading to inefficient learning. This not only hampers their own academic progress but also affects the overall classroom atmosphere.
To address this, I propose the following suggestions. Firstly, let’s prepare well before class to stay engaged. Secondly, active participation in discussions is far more beneficial than passive listening. Lastly, setting clear learning goals for each session can significantly enhance our focus. Class time is a valuable resource. By making the most of it, we can achieve better results with less effort outside the classroom. Let’s work together to create a vibrant and efficient learning environment.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】例文
The next day, with a heavy heart, I almost dragged myself into the principal’s office. He looked up from his desk, with a hint of curiosity in his eyes, and cut straight to the point, “So — what did your grandpa say ” Sitting upright with hands clasped tight, I stated Grandpa’s decision, “He said he wouldn’t pay for something I’ve already earned.” A sharp silence cracked between us. The principal paused, brows knitted and jaw set, as if wrestling with a difficult decision. Minutes stretched on before he finally spoke up, “The Board will reconsider the policy.” But no hope stirred in me — “reconsider” sounded more like a polite way to end the conversation. I nodded faintly and headed for the door.
At the end of the day, Mr. Smith brought me the news about the scholarship jacket. “Congratulations, kid. The Board has made an exception for you.” Mr. Smith winked and patted me on the back. “You spoke bravely for yourself — don’t lose that voice.” His words echoed like a victory bell in my chest. I sprinted to the bean field and told the good news to Grandpa between ragged breaths. Crumbling warm earth through my fingers, I saw it clearly: courage is a seed; once you plant your voice, the world shifts an inch toward justice, and that inch is enough to grow a life upon.
