When Marie Benton first moved to London in 2008, joining a choir helped her settle in. To comfort and boost confidence for people in trouble, she hung posters in local hostels advertising “a choir with no name (yet)”, and it was an immediate
success. Thus was officially born The Choir with No Name (TCWNN), which now boasts seven choirs across multiple cities to support those affected by homelessness
and exclusion.
Studies have documented the close link between homelessness and poor mental health. A 2022 report revealed homeless people experience worse physical and mental health than the general population. Fortunately, research in Psychology of Music
found choir participation improves positive emotions, with 88% of people seeing mental health improvements and 78% reporting reduced stress and anxiety.
Frequently excluded and often ignored, homeless people are often isolated. “Our choirs aim to do the opposite, where everyone is seen and heard,” says TCWNN’s
CEO Dr. Kate Wareham.
Unlike other groups, TCWNN is free to join, welcoming people of all ages,
backgrounds and musical abilities, with no pre-registration, audition or regular
commitment. Rehearsals (彩排) start with a chat, followed by 90 minutes of group singing and a hot meal afterward. The choir directors are teaching group singing in a way that ensures everyone is supported to grow both personally and musically.
Dan, who has been in the choir since 2015, says his life has been transformed. Forced to leave his family home and living in a hostel, he had withdrawn from the
world. Weekly rehearsals gave him a routine among the chaos, providing hope during darkness. “When I joined, I was at the bottom of the ladder; choir was the start of
climbing up, and, slowly but surely, I got to where I am today — a confident and outgoing person.” he says. Now Dan has his own flat and rebuilds family
relationships.
4 .Why did Marie Benton start TCWNN?
A .To uplift people experiencing hardships. B .To help herself settle in London quickly.
C.To help with the promotion of local hostels.D.To establish a choir network across the UK.
5 .What does the research in Psychology of Music show?
A .The growing popularity of singing activities. B .The poor physical health of homeless people.
C.The positive effects of choir on mental health. D.The link between homelessness and mental health.
6 .What does TCWNN feature?
A .Required registration. B .Easy access for everyone.
C .High attendance demands. D .Strict musical ability standards.
7 .What can be a suitable title for the text?
A .Where Every Voice Matters B .How Music Heals Inner Wounds
C .Why Singing Brings Stress Relief D .What Science Says About Choirs

Philadelphia, sometimes also called Philly, is a big city on the Delaware River in the southeastern state of Pennsylvania. It has about 1.5 million people.
William Penn, an Englishman, erected Pennsylvania in the 1680s, creating a new colony where religious freedom was guaranteed. He also designed the city. Penn chose the name
Philadelphia — a term meaning “city of brotherly love” in Greek.
Philadelphia is famous for holding an important place in American history. It served as the nation’s capital from 1785 to 1790. Earlier, it was the capital of the American colonies (殖民地) during most of the Revolutionary War against Britain. Philadelphia became the central meeting
place for the “Founding Fathers” who created the United States government. The buildings where they worked can be seen today in an area called the Old City, or Independence National Historical Park. The main building is Independence Hall. That was where colonial leaders declared
independence and later debated the creation of a government.
The National Park Service says more than 2.6 million people visited Independence National Historical Park last year. Close to the park is the National Liberty Museum. It holds a collection of more than ninety paintings and sculptures. Several blocks away lies the National Constitution (宪法) Center. This privately operated nonprofit museum opened its doors in Philadelphia on July 4, 2003. It was created to increase public recognition of the Constitution, its history, and its
importance today.
Rich with tradition, Philadelphia offers plenty to visitors who are less concerned about history and more concerned about their stomachs. There are many food choices for hungry
visitors. Reading Terminal Market, for example, is one of the nation’s largest public markets. At
Reading Terminal Market, visitors can find all kinds of foods — including, of course, Philly
cheesesteak. The city is known for these sandwiches. They are made of thin pieces of meat
covered with cheese. A cheesesteak is offered with onions and other toppings and served on a long roll.
8 .What does the underlined word “erected” in paragraph 2 mean?
A .Explored. B .Attacked. C .Founded. D .Recommended.
9 .What does the author intend to tell us about Philadelphia in paragraph 3?
A .Its local cultural traditions. B .Its unique architectural style.
C .Its popular tourist activities. D .Its vital historical position.
10 .What do we know about the National Constitution Center?
A .It attracts many tourists every year. B .It has a large collection of artworks.
C.It is privately run and requires a fee to visit. D.It focuses on citizen constitutional education.
11 .How does Philadelphia attract visitors who care little about history?
A .By offering food to hungry people. B .By organizing visits to various markets.
C .By introducing all kinds of delicious food. D .By teaching traditional food cooking skills.

In the global effort to fight climate change, scientists are exploring solutions in unexpected places — including the soil beneath our feet. A recent study published in Nature highlights a promising discovery: specific bacteria that can dramatically
reduce agricultural emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O), a powerful greenhouse gas.
Nitrous oxide, largely released from farm fields due to nitrogen fertiliser (肥料) use, is a major climate concern. According to co-author Professor Lars Bakken of the Norwegian University of Life Sciences, the gas is 265 times more effective at
warming the atmosphere than carbon dioxide and can remain in the air for over a century.
To develop the solution, researchers grew the bacteria using organic waste.
Building on past work, they looked for a microorganism that would reduce nitrous
oxide emissions without staying in the soil for so long that it harmed other life forms
important for crop health. The bacteria reduced emissions after a second fertiliser
treatment by about half two weeks later. After three months, the makeup of microbial (微生物的) life was unchanged, suggesting the bacteria would not harm the soil.
The bacteria, which are not genetically modified, occur naturally in anaerobic digesters — facilities that transform organic waste into biofuels. That might ease
acceptance of their use, said Paul Carini of the University of Arizona, who was not involved in the research. Moreover, Bakken stated that this “opens up a number of new possibilities” for managing farmland. The bacteria could be added to fertilisers, offering a potential direct application for farmers. As Carini noted, using a waste
product from one industrial process to benefit another is cost-effective.
However, significant challenges remain before widespread use. Professor Lori
Hoagland of Purdue University, an expert in the field, noted that soils vary globally,
requiring more field testing to ensure effectiveness. More critically, farmers currently get no financial motivation to adopt such methods. Bakken argued that authorities
must create policies to make emission reductions profitable. If these limitations can be addressed, this bacterial treatment could have a major impact on reducing
agriculture’s contribution to climate change.
12 .Why is nitrous oxide a major climate concern?
A .It is released in larger amounts than CO2.
B .It stays in the atmosphere for a very short time.
C .It comes mainly from industrial production.
D .It has a much stronger warming effect than CO2.
13 .What did the researchers find?
A .A way to help farmers increase fertiliser use.
B .A bacterium that stays in the soil forever.
C .A method to produce more biofuels from waste.
D .A microbe that cuts N2O without harming soil.
14 .Which aspect of the bacteria is mainly discussed in paragraph 4?
A .Its potential benefits. B .Its working principle.
C .Its producing process. D .Its research value.
15 .What prevents the application of the finding?
A .Shortage of necessary bacteria.
B .Difficulty in large-scale testing.
C .Lack of economic benefit for farmers.
D .Uncertainty about its effect.

Dear Fresher, joining a university can be a pleasant but challenging experience: horrific and yet beautiful, scary but exciting. 16
Do not panic if, like me, you do not make friends on the first day or week.
Before I met Sanaa, I had tried to force myself to make friends with classmates in my other majors. Then I was starting to get convinced that there was something wrong
with me. 17 Eventually, when I started making more friends, it made sense why the friendships I had forced did not work out. It was my first lesson in
understanding my uniqueness, and reminding me that my “friends” are somewhere, out there 18
So, dear Fresher, as I say welcome to university life, I am also saying, give
yourself time-to understand your school, your course, and your new rhythm of life. Do not fall into the trap of people-pleasing to fit in.
19 Of course, you must leave room to grow and breathe- to discover
amazing cultures, new accents, and new ways of matching your clothes-but do not do anything that needs you to abandon your genuine self in order to become.
Finally, it might not look like it, but the four, five, or six years you will be in
university will pass by really quickly. 20 Perhaps that is DIYs, writing blog posts, participating in club activities in your department, or joining the dance troupe.
So, dear Fresher, go forward, and leave your mark! You will be surprised at
how much experience that will contribute to your CV.
A .It is a big turn on the pages of your life.
B .Extracurricular activities build confidence.
C .I no longer struggle too hard to fit square pegs into round holes.
D .It is a good idea for you to make friends with like-minded people.
E .That was why I got uninspired by every friendship I tried to make.
F .While the new phase of life is challenging, remember who you truly are.
G .Seek out opportunities to do stuff you are passionate about during your free time.

第二节 语法填空(共 10 小题,每小题 1.5 分,满分 15 分)
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入 1 个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
2025 “Xiangchao” (Hunan Football League) was far more than a sports event; it was 36 social phenomenon that breathed new life into the province. Initially
starting as local games, these events quickly crossed the boundaries of the sports field and brought together people from all walks of life, all 37 (unite) by their love
for the game.
The real magic happened beyond the pitch. Stadium squares were transformed into lively night markets, 38 the air was filled with the inviting scent of local

youth development. Inspired by the players, many youngsters 42 (draw) from

第二节 读后续写(满分 25 分)
47 .阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My most memorable Thanksgiving happened last year at our local church,
where a simple outreach program blossomed into a profound lesson on the power of sharing, care, and inclusion.
A week before Thanksgiving, with a few church members, we wanted to give away holiday meals for families in our community. We contacted neighbors and
social workers for families who might be struggling. Their responses were
overwhelming: a single mother, Amy, working two jobs to pay medical bills; an
elderly couple, Mr and Mrs Jones, whose fixed income couldn’t stretch; the Tomas family, displaced by a recent fire...
Eventually, we created a list of 10 families in financial need, each to receive a Thanksgiving food basket. These were carefully prepared baskets with all necessities for a traditional holiday meal: golden stuffing mix, green beans, sweet potatoes,
jellied cranberry sauce, flour, butter, onions, and dessert items, and even turkeys and hams.
That night, the fellowship hall buzzed with laughter and emotion. As each
family arrived to pick up their basket, their gratitude was evident. Mr and Mrs Jones shared how this would be their first full meal together in weeks. Amy spoke quietly about job losses, and others about hardships. Yet, in that hall, there was warmth
restored.
Just as the families were about to leave, a father, mother, and a child with worn but neat clothes stepped in. The father said they had simply heard through word of
mouth that a church was giving out food and decided to come. Clearly, they were not
on our list. I approached them and explained that we were unable to provide supplies today for an extra family due to limited resources. I felt so sorry as I looked at the
family, hoping they would understand the difficult circumstances. The man responded with an awkward smile, saying, “Oh, never mind. We just came to see if anything was available. Thank you anyway.”
注意:
(1)续写词数应为 150 左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

12 .细节理解题。 根据第二段中“According to co-author Professor Lars Bakken of the
Norwegian University of Life Sciences, the gas is 265 times more effective at warming the
atmosphere than carbon dioxide and can remain in the air for over a century.(据挪威生命科学大学的合著者 Lars Bakken 教授称,这种气体使大气变暖的效率是二氧化碳的 265 倍,并且可以在空气中停留一个多世纪)”可知,一氧化二氮是主要的气候问题是因为它比二氧化碳的变暖效应强得多。故选 D。
13 .细节理解题。 根据第三段中“To develop the solution, researchers grew the bacteria using organic waste. Building on past work, they looked for a microorganism that would reduce nitrous oxide emissions without staying in the soil for so long that it harmed other life forms important for crop health. The bacteria reduced emissions after a second fertiliser treatment by about half two
weeks later. After three months, the makeup of microbial (微生物的) life was unchanged,
suggesting the bacteria would not harm the soil.(为了开发解决方案,研究人员使用有机废物培

14 .主旨大意题。 根据第四段中“The bacteria, which are not genetically modified, occur
naturally in anaerobic digesters — facilities that transform organic waste into biofuels. That might ease acceptance of their use, said Paul Carini of the University of Arizona, who was not involved in the research. Moreover, Bakken stated that this “opens up a number of new possibilities” for
managing farmland. The bacteria could be added to fertilisers, offering a potential direct
application for farmers. As Carini noted, using a waste product from one industrial process to
故选 A。
15.细节理解题。根据最后一段中“More critically, farmers currently get no financial motivation to adopt such methods.(更关键的是,农民目前没有采用这种方法的经济动力)”可知,缺乏对农民的经济利益阻碍了这一发现的应用。故选 C。

【导语】本文是说明文。文章以亲切、随和的语气向新生提出了关于如何适应大学生活、保持自我、寻找兴趣等多方面的建议,既有作者的亲身经历,也有对新生的殷切期望和鼓励。 16 .分析设空位于段尾,是对前文的总结,根据前文“Dear Fresher, joining a university can be a pleasant but challenging experience: horrific and yet beautiful, scary but exciting.(亲爱的新生 们,上大学可能是一段愉快但又充满挑战的经历:可怕但又美丽,可怕但又令人兴奋)”可知, A 项“It is a big turn on the pages of your life.(这是你人生的一个重大转折)”是对前文内容的总结,说明大学的重要性。故选 A 项。
17 .根据前文“Before I met Sanaa, I had tried to force myself to make friends with classmates in my other majors. Then I was starting to get convinced that there was something wrong with
me.(在认识萨那之前,我试着强迫自己和其他专业的同学交朋友。然后我开始确信我有什么问题)”以及后文“Eventually, when I started making more friends, it made sense why the
friendships I had forced did not work out.(最终,当我开始结交更多的朋友时,我明白了为什么我强迫的友谊没有成功)”可知,空处应是介绍前文讲述的作者自己的问题所造成的后果,这个问题会导致他强迫的友谊没有成功,所以 E 项“That was why I got uninspired by every
friendship I tried to make.(这就是为什么我对我试图结交的每一个朋友都不感兴趣)”符合文意。故选 E 项。
18.分析设空位于段尾,是对前文的总结,根据前文“It was my first lesson in understanding my uniqueness, and reminding me that my “friends” are somewhere, out there.(这是我了解自己独特性的第一课,并提醒我,我的“朋友”就在某处,在那里)”可知,作者明白,不需要刻意去结交他人,所以 C 项“I no longer struggle too hard to fit square pegs into round holes.(我不再费力地把方钉塞进圆孔里)”符合文意,通过比喻说明自己不再刻意去结交他人。故选 C 项。
19 .分析设空,位于段首,应是本段的中心句,根据后文“Of course, you must leave room to grow and breathe- to discover amazing cultures, new accents, and new ways of matching your
clothes-but do not do anything that needs you to abandon your genuine self in order to become.(当然,你必须留下成长和呼吸的空间——去发现令人惊叹的文化、新的口音和搭配衣服的新方法——但不要做任何需要你为了成为而放弃真实自我的事情)”可知,本段讲述了大一新生不要做任何需要你为了成为而放弃真实自我的事情,所以 F 项“While the new phase of life is
challenging, remember who you truly are.(当生活的新阶段充满挑战时,记住真正的自己)”符合文意。故选 F 项。
20 .根据前文“Finally, it might not look like it, but the four, five, or six years you will be in
university will pass by really quickly.(最后,它可能看起来不像,但你在大学的四年、五年或六年时间会很快过去)”以及后文“Perhaps that is DIYs, writing blog posts, participating in club activities in your department, or joining the dance troupe.(也许是 diy,写博客,参加部门的社团活动,或者加入舞蹈团)”可知,前文讲述时间过得很快,后文讲述参加活动,所以空处应是一个过渡句,G 项“Seek out opportunities to do stuff you are passionate about during your free time.(在空闲时间找机会做你感兴趣的事情)”符合文意,承接上文,引出下文。故选 G 项。

Boys and girls,
I feel honored to be here to share a song that touches my heart, called “Heal the World” by Michael Jackson. It was written to encourage people to care for others. As the song notes, “Heal the world, make it a better place, for you and for me.”
This song makes me think about how I relate to others. Last year, I joined a volunteer group to help children in poor areas. Seeing their smiles, I realized that even small acts of kindness
matter. The song is like a wake-up call, reminding me that we are all connected and inspiring me to keep giving.
I hope all of you can find a song that touches your heart and moves you to act.
Thank you!

Just as the disappointed family were about to leave, Mrs Jones stopped them. She hurried
over with her neatly packed food basket. “Wait a moment,” she said gently, fetching an empty box from the corner of hall. She pulled out a bag of golden stuffing mix and laid it carefully into the
box. Mr Jones stood beside her, nodded in agreement, “We don’t need so much food for just the two of us.” Inspired by their kindness, Amy reached into her basket for a jar of jellied cranberry sauce, while the Tomas family contributed six plump sweet potatoes. One by one, each family
stepped forward and offered an item. Soon, the empty box was transformed into the 11th special basket, brimming with all the Thanksgiving necessities, woven together by the love of everyone present.
Seeing the special “basket”, the family were moved to tears. The mother quickly wiped her moist eyes with the back of her hand, and clutched her child tightly to her chest, while the father
held the basket as ifit were a precious treasure. “Thank you, thank you all so much,” he said
hoarsely, his voice choked with deep gratitude. The child looked up at the crowd and whispered a shy yet sincere“thank you” too. As they left, the warm glow of the church lights fell on their
figures, gently illuminating their path home. That night, we all grasped the true essence of
Thanksgiving — it lies not just in giving, but in sharing hand in hand.
