Dear Mom,
It’s me, Faisal Abdullah Malik, your son from Pakistan, who crossed the border for a heart transplant. You saved my life a decade ago by making a decision that only a mother as
extraordinary as you could make.
On 26 December 2014, both our lives changed forever. Karthick, your beloved son, was brought to Tirupur Government Hospital, near Coimbatore, in southern India, after a tragic road accident. He was later transferred to G. Kuppusamy Naidu Memorial (GKNM) Hospital. When the doctors declared him brain dead, you had to face the unthinkable, holding his hand, saying your silent goodbyes.
In the depths ofthat unimaginable grief, Mom, you made a choice that speaks of boundless courage and selflessness. You not only gave me Karthick’s heart but also donated five other
organs, giving the gift of life to six strangers. You made this difficult decision without ever questioning the race, religion, or nationality. Your decision was solely about saving lives.
Today, as a father of two growing children, I can truly understand the magnitude of your
sacrifice. I can only imagine the storm of emotions you must have battled. Did you question if it was the right decision Did you fear it was too much to bear And yet, in the darkest hour of your life, you chose life for others. You chose hope. I know Karthick must be so proud of you, as am I, Mom. I am alive today because of your strength.
Tearing apart the political divide, I have longed to meet you, Mom. I have travelled to
Chennai several times since receiving Karthick’s heart, always hoping to somehow find a way to Coimbatore. But my medical visa restricts me from travelling outside Chennai. You might be
wondering why I don’t even call you Names of donors and recipients are kept confidential, and I feel helpless.
Allah tells us in The Qur’an, “Whoever saves a life, it is as if they saved all of humanity.”

Faisal

For most of my life, I treated taste as fixed. There were things I liked and things I didn’t, and that was that.
Sticking to that belief had left me in a bit of a standstill. I stopped making time for new
hobbies or trying anything new. Salsa lessons No, thanks. Interactive theatre Not for me. But
my automatic “no” to anything that “wasn’t my thing” only kept me trapped in the same routine of work, sleep, eating, and that left me feeling listless and a little empty.
So, in an effort to break the boredom, I began to question whether my taste was fixed at all, or whether it might be something I could train. I had read that children need 8 to 15 tries to accept a new food. Why shouldn’t the same principle apply to social activities for adults
I started small. When a friend invited me to a book club, I resisted the urge to dismiss it,
despite my longstanding dislike of reading due to dyslexia (阅读障碍症). But I went anyway. I
listened to the first book on audio book and, to my surprise, enjoyed the discussion and the people. Now I spend mornings reading. Then came music and performance: jazz clubs, line dancing,
试卷第 6 页,共 13 页
contemporary performance — all things I had previously ignored.
Trying things you thought you wouldn’t enjoy, I found, became oddly addictive. I didn’t
love everything straight away, but I stopped saying no before I had even begun. Most recently, I tried out my local library’s chess club. I was easily 30 years younger than everyone else, but that didn’t matter. Honestly, there was nothing quite like being wiped off the board by someone who had been playing since before your parents met. I felt more of a connection with others there than at any organized twenty-something social event I’ve attended.
Putting “try something new” in my diary once a week broke up the work-commute-collapse cycle I had accidentally built my life around. Now I simply count to five, approach the
friendliest-looking person with a “hello”, and any initial awkwardness quickly fades. Next week Who knows. Maybe magic lessons. Maybe life drawing. Maybe both.
8 .How did the author’s fixed idea affect her
A .It simplified her daily routine. B .It left her more time for work.
C .It flattened her life into dullness. D .It spared her unwanted socializing.
9 .Why did the author accept her friend’s invitation to a book club
A .To make a conscious shift in her life. B .To revisit a former interest in reading.
C .To meet her friend’s repeated requests. D .To occupy a blank in her personal calendar.
10 .How did the author feel when losing the chess game
A .Totally relieved. B .Slightly puzzled.
C .Rather embarrassed. D .Somewhat delighted.
11 .What message does the author try to convey
A .Learn to say no. B .Break out of your shell.
C .Look before you leap. D .Let go of the past.

In the crystal-clear waters near Talamone, Italy, an extraordinary sight awaits beneath the Mediterranean Sea’s surface. Mermaids, towering giants and enormous sculptural eyes gaze
upward from the ocean floor, creating an otherworldly underwater gallery that serves a crucial environmental purpose. This unique initiative represents one innovative fisherman’s determined effort to protect vital fishing grounds from the disastrous impact of commercial fishing nets that
试卷第 7 页,共 13 页
threaten marine ecosystems.
The underwater sculpture garden operates on a simple yet effective principle that
strategically placed artistic installations (安装工程) work alongside concrete blocks to physically obstruct and break the fishing nets that destroy marine life. These massive fishing nets, dragged across the seafloor by commercial vessels, destroy delicate underwater habitats and deplete fish populations that local fishing communities depend upon for their livelihood.
The project has evolved beyond its initial conservation goals to become a cooperative effort involving local educational institutions and young artists. Students from a high school in nearby
Grosseto have actively participated in the initiative, creating specialized sculptural works designed to serve two purposes. These student-crafted pieces not only contribute to the anti-fishing barrier system but also provide alternative habitats for marine creatures. By offering the marine species a safe shelter within the sculptural installations, the project helps reduce their vulnerability to illegal fishing practices while supporting natural population recovery.
The fisherman behind the initiative recognized that traditional regulatory approaches alone were not enough to fulfill the environmental commitment. And the sculptures themselves have
captured international attention while serving practical conservation purposes. Each piece sunk to the Mediterranean floor contributes to a growing underwater museum that tells the story of local efforts to preserve marine biodiversity.
As the sculpture garden continues to expand, it serves as an inspiring example of how art and environmental protection can work together to create lasting positive change in marine
ecosystems.
12 .What is the purpose of the underwater sculptures
A .To protect underwater ecosystems. B .To promote local fishing industry.
C .To raise environmental awareness. D .To create an attractive artistic gallery.
13 .What does the underlined word “deplete” in paragraph 2 mean
A .Carefully manage. B .Gradually relocate.
C .Significantly reduce. D .Successfully protect.
14 .What can we learn about the project in paragraph 3
A .The project calls for more support from students and artists.
B .The project has expanded into a community-based initiative.
试卷第 8 页,共 13 页
C .The sculptures have managed to stop practices of illegal fishing.
D .The sculptures show superior artistic skills of the young participants.

Laughter is the best medicine that stimulates brain activity to relieve depressive symptoms. 17 You can get the greatest gift from them: a hearty laugh. achievement. 18 You can treat yourself to fresh flowers or homemade cup of hot cocoa. These fun or meaningful things are the basis for behavioral activation, a vital means of boosting spirits.
19 If a coworker’s upcoming Bermuda vacation sparks your travel wish, plan a local staycation — even a mini one, for example, a Sunday afternoon ice skating with friends, trying a new nearby restaurant or going to a concert. All this requires neither a big budget nor time off
work but still cheers you up.
Lack of sunshine disturbs the body’s biological clock, leading to a drop in serotonin (血清素) and vitamin D levels, and therefore, your mood and energy levels. If you have flexibility and the weather allows, try to schedule early-morning walks or lunchtime jogs outside to get more

The airport announcement informed passengers that due to bad weather, the flight would be delayed for two hours before boarding. Mary’s mom commented quietly that the delay seemed to have ruined everyone’s mood. But eleven-year-old Mary stayed calm, softly humming (哼) a new song she hadjust learned. She was looking forward to the weekend trip to visit her grandparents, excited to share the song with them.
To her, music was like an invisible string that could tie strangers together, creating a warm

community. She remembered the first time she had felt this connection: at six years old, waiting for the bus with her mom on a hot, boring day. Then a cheerful tune came from a store
loudspeaker—a song about a girl and her dreams:
“Dreams of sunshine and fields of gold,
Where the heart is never old,
Singing songs that never end,
In a world that’s my best friend... ”
Without thinking, Mary sang along—her voice soft and gentle at first, like a whisper carried on the gentle wind, which gradually growing stronger and more confident. The melody was simple yet engaging. Time passed without her noticing. When the bus arrived, passengers smiled; an old man beat his walking stick to the beat. As the doors closed, everyone was humming. Mom
whispered to her, “You just lifted all our spirits.” Nothing seemed better than music for calming a restless heart, and Mary remembered that.
After boarding the plane, the passengers were told of another weather delay— at least another 45minutes. The cabin (机舱) grew tense with restless movements and complaints.
Then a sudden cry cut through the air. Across the aisle (通道) to Mary’s left, a tiny girl,
barely three years old, began to cry. Her mother tried everything—rocking her, offering snacks, water, toys—but nothing worked. The child’s face was wet with tears, her cries loud and broken. Passengers shifted uncomfortably in their seats as the crying filled the cabin.

15.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是根据最后一段“As the sculpture garden continues to expand, it serves as an inspiring example of how art and environmental protection can work together to
create lasting positive change in marine ecosystems.

Nowadays, we teenagers have been exposed to various digital devices. We have become so dependent on technology that we are losing our ability to connect with one another.
Fortunately, I have benefited a lot from “digital minimalism” . Firstly, I begin to appreciate the world directly rather than through a screen. For example, I spend more time reading books instead of playing video games. Secondly, I have become more productive. After getting rid of my phone, I have more time to pursue other hobbies.
I am calling on all of us to put our phones aside and experience this colorful world.
