For more than ten years, I was a screen and TV writer, navigating the shark-filled waters of Hollywood. Despite the constant and unavoidable ups and downs ofthis life, I realized many of my dreams, including working with stars like Lucas and writing an Emmy-winning TV show.
Then, my life took an unexpected turn. In 2011, I agreed to teach a class. I discovered a deep love for it — the engagement with students and the stable income were welcome changes.
As my writing career slowed, my wife encouraged me to pursue more teaching. I researched and found a position at UC Riverside. I said “Yes” to the interview, got the job, and within years became a professor. Academia became my focus, but I remained a writer at heart. I decided to
write my first novel, free from deadlines, simply for the creative joy.
In 2015, an email asked if I was interested in giving a talk in the community. I said “Yes.” The challenge was big: a 15-minute speech in front of 500 people and three cameras. However, I
succeeded, and the talk was well-received. After the speech was uploaded to the internet, it led to an email from Publishizer, suggesting a book on my talk’s topic. I instead recommended my
novel. They asked if I wanted to launch a pre-sale campaign to attract readers. I said “Yes.”
Publishizer’s founder advised me to find an editor. Again, I said “Yes.” I hired Lauren
Hughes, whose insightful feedback was incredibly encouraging. I accepted her notes and revised the manuscript (手稿). The pre-sale campaign sold over 300 books, generating interest from many readers. So my first novel was published.
All this happened because I consistently said “Yes” to new opportunities, welcoming
challenges without knowing the outcome. This philosophy keeps me engaged against the pull of aging. As a professor, I urge students to be positive. I don’t know how my novel will be received, but when asked if I have a book out, I can proudly say “Yes.”

7 .What is mainly conveyed in the text?
A .Teaching is more rewarding than writing.

Analytical reading is defined as a high-level cognitive skill and a reading strategy that
serves the purpose of exploring more deeply to comprehend both the message and the purpose or ultimate goal of the text at hand. Whether you use analytical reading for school assignments, daily reading, or work, this skill is undoubtedly one of the most important for readers.
The importance of analytical thinking in reading and writing has much deeper roots than
you might expect. Reading analytically can help readers gain a deeper understanding of the text at hand, extract its core ideas, recognize its structural logic, and conduct critical analysis — thus
drawing sound conclusions about it.
Needless to say, this entire process has several benefits for those who make the effort to
apply it to their reading sessions. For starters, it is a good way to make sure that you get the most rewarding reading experience.
Another benefit of reading analytically is the fact that you will have much better
comprehension and retention (记忆力) levels at the end of your reading session. Admittedly, the process does take time, so you will get through far fewer pages in the same timeframe than you would with passive reading — but the value you extract from those pages will undeniably be
much higher.
The analytical reading definition does mention that it is a high-level cognitive skill, but
what does that actually mean? Well, it means that it can only be achieved by readers with a high degree of proficiency (熟练) in reading. And there is actually a causal relationship between
reading proficiency and analytical reading skills: the only way to become a proficient reader is
through practicing analytical reading, and the higher one’s reading proficiency, the more accurate their analysis will be.
8 .What can we learn about analytical reading from the first two paragraphs?
A .It has a rather narrow scope of application.
B .It helps readers better grasp the text’s purpose.
C .It intends to develop readers’ critical thinking
D .It holds greater importance in reading than in writing.
9 .How does the author mainly present the benefit in the fourth paragraph?
A .By making a comparison. B .By defining a concept.
C .By citing typical examples. D .By presenting specific data.
10 .What is the probable relationship between analytical reading and reading proficiency?
A .High proficiency is key to effective analytical reading.
B .Analytical reading barely relates to reading proficiency.
C .Reading proficiency improves without analytical reading.
D .Analytical reading matters more than reading proficiency.
11 .What topic will the author most likely discuss next in the text?
A .Steps to develop analytical reading skills.
B .Challenges in practicing analytical reading.
C .Examples of analytical reading in daily life.
D .Applications of analytical reading in different fields.

Researchers recently studied some newly discovered dark rocks from Mars and concluded
that they were likely laid down from the air, potentially as volcanic ash billions of years ago.
However, no volcanoes have been discovered at the site to date. “There are no known volcanoes at this site, which means the ash probably came from hundreds or maybe even thousands of
kilometers away,” Emma Harris, first author of the study, said in a statement. “It likely came from a really explosive volcano which launched ash high into the atmosphere and the ash travelled this huge distance before settling at this site.”
Researchers found there were strange light-coloured spots on the rocks, each surrounded by dark material containing iron and phosphate (磷酸盐). “These spots are a big surprise,” said David Flannery at the Queensland University of Technology. “On Earth, these types of features on rocks are often associated with the fossilized record of microbes (微生物) living in the subsurface.”
That is because the type of chemical reaction that creates these sorts of spots on Earth rocks can also provide useful energy for microbes.
In the same area where the rocks are located, certain organic compounds that are often
considered the building blocks of life were also found. All of these together could be taken as a sign of bygone Martian microbes, but it is far from a smoking gun. “We should be cautiously
excited and keep sensible,” said the researchers.
To learn more about these rocks, the study authors mapped a region of 19,300 square miles
using data from the Context Camera on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, a NASA satellite. The dark rocks are theorized to have once covered the whole site, but are now only found in smaller
areas. The researchers propose that this is because the ash was preserved in areas of lower altitude inside impact craters (撞击坑), where it mixed with groundwater. “When the ash fell on these
patches of water, it made them stickier and then more solid. The rest ofthe ash which landed on the surrounding rocks may have just blown away and never preserved,” Harris said.
12 .Why did Emma Harris mention “no known volcanoes at this site”?
A .To explain the rock’s special colour.
B .To make a guess about the source of ash.
C .To prove the site has always been inactive.
D .To indicate the rocks are formed by impacts.
13 .Why were researchers surprised at the light-coloured spots?
A .They appeared in smaller regions than expected.
B .They contained unknown minerals on Mars.
C .They contradicted past Martian geography findings.
D .They may involve reactions linked to the Earth’s microbial activity.
14 .What does the underlined phrase “far from a smoking gun” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A .A direct cause. B .Not a problem.
C .Not strong evidence. D .Obvious misunderstanding.
15 .What can be a suitable title for the text?
A .Impact Craters with Traces of Water on Mars
B .Martian Ash: Clues to Ancient Volcanic Activity
C .Martian Subsurface: Proof of Complex Ecosystems
D .Rocks from Mars with Possible Signs of Ancient Life

I believe that music can preserve a memory in life. I have been listening to music for two decades now. Almost every song that comes on the radio brings back a memory. 16
Whenever I hear the bands “Loggins and Messina” or “The Amazing Rhythm Aces”, it takes me back in time to when I was just a young boy. 17 We moved all of the furniture out of the way, turned up the music, and sang and danced for hours. They remind me of my mother’s
beautiful voice singing every note of“Danny’s Song” at just the right tone, a sound I will never forget.
In Boy Scouts (野外探险少年团), I was on the road a lot going from camp to camp. With a bus full of my best friends, a radio was all we needed to have fun. 18 It was a sunny
summer day and we were on our way to a day camp in Northern Ohio. My best friend and I were in the backseat jamming to our new favorite song, “Bicycle Race”. Brandon on lead guitar and
myself singing “Bicycle, Bicycle, Bicycle”! ____19____ Singing, playing the air guitar, and being rock stars was all that mattered. Queen’s “Bicycle Race” came on every day after that.
20 Much like each photo tells a story, a song also tells a story. Every song I know preserves a memory of my life, memories that will be forever held in my heart, whether they are bad, good, or funny.
A .I remembered each song’s tune.
B .We didn’t have a care in the world.
C .Each tune seems to hold a piece of my past.
D .The song became the reason for our adventure.
E .I believe that music is like a photo record of life.
F .I remember staying home with my mom and sister.
G .I remember the moment I learned about the band “Queen”

第二节(满分 25 分)
47 .阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Last month, when I was walking home after school, I noticed something shining on the road
— a broken smartphone. Its screen was covered in cracks, and the outside was clearly hit by a car. I was curious and picked it up. The back cover came off easily, revealing a small SIM card (手机卡) inside. Storm clouds gathered as I studied the smartphone. I thought of something: my old
extra phone still worked. Maybe I could use the SIM card to find the owner. Feeling a little guilty but eager to help, I put the tiny card in my pocket, planning to check it later at home.
After I got home, I put the unknown SIM card into my extra phone. When I turned it on, it rang loudly at once — someone was calling! Nervously, I answered. A small, shaking voice cried, “Mom? Is that you? Please talk!” It was a young girl, sounding anxious and afraid. She said she
was calling her mother, who’d left hours ago to buy medicine for her. And she’d called many times, but no one answered. “My legs … they don’t work well. I’m scared,” she whispered. My heart hurt. “I’m not your mom,” I said softly, “but I want to help. Please tell me your address.”
The girl named Lily, lived close by. While talking with her, I quickly searched local news sites on my laptop. I saw a news report that a car accident happened near Oak Street Pharmacy — a woman was badly hurt, now at City General Hospital. A photo showed the emergency personnel carrying someone. “Lily,” I asked quickly, “Does your mom wear a blue coat with flowers?”
“Yes! Her favorite,” she said. The injured woman fit the details. “I think I know where she is,” I said. “Stay calm. I’m coming to get you, okay?” Lily responded in relief.
I also learned of some basic information about the family: Lily had no father, and all the
living expenses depended on the income of her mother working in the supermarket. They lived in a hard situation. Worse still, Lily had a leg disease, and she had to rely on medicines to stay alive. The medicines were expensive, which added financial burdens on them.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Arriving at Lily’s home, I found her waiting by the door in a wheelchair.

Gently helping her into the taxi and putting away her chair, the driver drove us fast to the hospital. At the emergency room, I asked a nurse about Lily’s mom. The nurse said kindly, “She’s okay
now,” and led us to a room. Lily’s cry was incredibly sad as she moved to her mother’s bedside. Seeing Lily holding her mother’s hand tightly, I felt a sense of sadness.
The next day when I returned to school, I had an idea to help Lily. My school had a tradition of supporting people facing difficulties. I approached our head teacher to share Lily’s story. To my
delight, our teacher immediately approved my plan. In the following days, we organized bake
sales, launched a donation campaign, and arranged a sponsored walk around the school field.
Seeing overflowing donation boxes and classmates eager to make contribution, I felt a feeling of pleasure and satisfaction. When I visited Lily’s family weeks later, the grateful smiles of Lily and her recovering mother made every effort worthwhile.
