TO: All Employees FROM: The Department of Mandatory Fun
DATE: September 26, 2025 SUBJECT: Mandatory Humor Training
Hello Team,
We have noticed that the sense of humor in our office is very low. Some jokes are so bad that
they made a plant die. This is a serious problem.
To fix this, we are announcing a mandatory training session,“How to Be Funny.” This
workshop will teach you important humor skills.
Part 1: Understatement
This is when you describe something big as something small. For example, instead of
shouting, “The server is on fire!”, you could calmly say, “We have a small heat problem with our
server.”
Part 2: Exaggeration
This is the opposite of understatement. You make something sound much bigger than it is.
For example,“I waited on the phone for a million years.” This is more interesting than saying,
“The wait was long.”
Part 3: Sarcasm
Sarcasm is saying the opposite of what you mean to be funny. If a coworker is late again and
says, “Sorry, traffic was bad,” you can say, “No problem. We love waiting for you.”
You must attend this training. It is very important for your social life at work. We look
forward to seeing you there.
Best,
The Department of Mandatory Fun

In a small, remote village in Hebei Province, China, a story of extraordinary persistence
began. Pang Zhongwang was born into a world of hardship that would seem insurmountable to
most. His father suffered from schizophrenia, a severe mental illness, then following an accident,
leading his father to a bed for most of his life. Compounding the family’s struggle, his mother was
paralyzed from the waist down that left her unable to care for him. His elderly grandparents, who
also faced their own health issues, did their best to hold the family together. This environment of
constant challenge became the background for Pang’s remarkable journey.
At the tender age of seven, another blow struck. Pang was diagnosed with heart disease, a
condition requiring immediate and expensive surgery. For a family already buried in poverty, the
cost was astronomical. Yet, driven by love, his family and relatives borrowed money from every
possible source, accumulating a massive debt to save his life. This act of sacrifice left a profound
mark on the young boy. Instead of being defeated, Pang developed a powerful sense of
responsibility. He felt an urgent need to help lift the financial burden from his family’s shoulders.
Every day after school, he would walk through his village and neighboring areas, a woven bag in
hand, collecting scrap metal, plastic bottles, and cardboard. He sold these items to recycling
stations, earning a meager income. Each coin he earned was not for toys or snacks, but a
contribution towards repaying the family’s debt. This self-imposed duty did not distract him from
his studies; rather, it seemed to fuel his determination. He understood that education was his only
reliable path to truly change his family’s fate.
Pang’s academic performance was as impressive as his personal tenacity. He consistently
ranked at the top of his class, viewing every exam as a step towards a brighter future. His hard
work finally paid off on the Gaokao. He achieved a score of 684, high enough to secure a place at
Tsinghua University, one of the best universities in the country. When news of his admission
spread, his story of overcoming obstacles captured the nation’s heart.
Pang Zhongwang’s story is not merely a tale of suffering; it is a powerful evidence to the
human spirit’s ability to fight against difficulties. His journey from collecting scrap to earning a
scholarship at an elite university is a lesson in persistence, gratitude, and unwavering
determination. He never blamed his circumstances but instead used them as motivation. For many,
Pang is more than just a top student; he is a symbol of hope, proving that with a strong will and a
grateful heart, no obstacle is too great to overcome.
24. What was the primary challenges Pang’s family faced?
A. His father’s mental illness and his mother’s paralysis.
B. His father’s unemployment and his mother’s chronic illness.
C. His grandparents’ old age and his own congenital heart disease.
D. Extreme poverty and a lack of educational resources in the village.
25. Why did Pang start to collect and sell scrap?
A. It was a common activity for children in his village.
B. He was forced by his grandparents to help earn money.
C. He felt a personal responsibility to help repay the debt.
D. He wanted to save money to buy books and school supplies.
26. What does the underlined word “tenacity” mean in the third paragraph?
A. intelligence B. determination C. popularity D. opportunity
27. What is the author’s attitude towards Pang Zhongwang?
A. Neutral. B. Critical. C. Sympathetic. D. Admiring.

Every year, during the Dragon Boat Festival, the normally silent Jinjiang River in Mayang
Miao Autonomous County, Hunan Province, transforms into an energetic stage for one of China’s
most spirited traditions: the Mayang Dragon Boat Race. This event is more than just a competition;
it is a profound cultural spectacle that presents the history, unity, and enduring spirit of the local
community, particularly the Miao ethnic group. For generations, this race has been a cornerstone
of local identity, weaving together ancient legends with modern-day festivities.
The origins of the Mayang race are deeply rooted in history. While it shares the common
legend in memory of poet Qu Yuan, the Mayang tradition has its own unique local flavor. For the
Miao people, the race is also a gesture to honor the river gods and pray for favorable weather and
a plentiful harvest. The dragon boats themselves are works of art, often over 20 meters long and
delicately carved dragon heads and tails. These boats are not owned by individuals but by entire
villages, symbolizing collective effort and shared heritage.
The race itself is a breathtaking display of power, accuracy, and teamwork. Beyond the
competitors, the race is a festival that attracts the entire county. The riverbanks become a sea of
people, with families and tourists gathering to witness the spectacle. The air is filled with the
sounds of cheering crowds, the beat of drums, and the perfume of traditional festival foods
like zongzi. This shared experience develops a powerful sense of community pride and belonging.
It’s a time when people reconnect with their roots, celebrate their culture, and strengthen social
bonds. The event serves as a living museum, showcasing traditions that have been preserved for
centuries.
In recent years, the Mayang Dragon Boat Race has evolved while holding onto its core
traditions. Recognized as an item of national intangible cultural heritage, the event has gained
wider attention, attracting tourists from across China and beyond. This has brought economic
benefits to the region and has encouraged the younger generation to engage with their cultural
heritage. The local government supports the event, ensuring its preservation and promotion. The
Mayang Dragon Boat Race is a brilliant example of how a traditional custom can thrive in the
modern world, serving not only as a link to the past but also as a dynamic force for community
development and cultural expression.
28. What is the purpose of the text??
A. To provide a detailed guide on how to win a dragon boat race.
B. To argue that the Mayang race is superior to other dragon boat races.
C. To focus on the economic benefits of the Mayang Dragon Boat Race.
D. To offer a comprehensive overview of the Mayang Dragon Boat Race.
29. What can be inferred about the community’s attitude towards the dragon boats?
A. They are seen as disposable items rebuilt every year for the race.
B. They are regarded as a carrier of collective heritage and village honor.
C. They are primarily owned by wealthy individuals who sponsor the teams.
D. They are considered less important than the individual skills of the competitors.
30. What do we know about the Mayang Dragon Boat Race?
A. It is a modern invention designed to attract tourists.
B. It is merely a sporting event with no cultural meaning.
C. It is the only race that commemorates the poet Qu Yuan.
D. It connects the ancient culture and the spiritual core of the Miao people.
31. How is the race nowadays?
A. It has led to a decrease in community participation.
B. It becomes less traditional while more commercialized.
C. More tourists and encouraged youth engage in this event.
D. The local government has decided to make it thrive on its own.
D
In the world of professional sports, a single incorrect call can change the result of a match, a
championship, and even a career. To fight against this, sports have increasingly turned to
technology for objective truth. Foremost among these innovations is Hawk-Eye, a complex
computer vision system used to visually track the movement of a ball and display a record of its
statistically most likely path. First introduced in cricket in 2001 and later gaining fame in tennis,
Hawk-Eye is now a familiar sight in over 20 sports, including football and volleyball. Its
popularity has also led to widespread discussion: does this pursuit for accuracy come at a cost to
the spirit of the game?
The most celebrated advantage of Hawk-Eye is its contribution to fairness and accuracy. The
system boasts an average margin of error(误差) of just 3.6 millimeters, a level of precision far
beyond the capability of the human eye. Once days of debate are now often resolved in seconds.
This not only ensures that results are more just but also reduces the pressure on officials. The
result is a game where athletic performance, not human error, is the primary determinant of the
outcome. Beyond it, Hawk-Eye has transformed the game-watching experience. Broadcasters use
Hawk-Eye’s data to provide deeper analysis, showing viewers the placement of serves, the bounce
of a cricket ball, or the shot patterns of a player. This presentation educates and engages the
audience, turning a passive viewing experience into an interactive and analytical one.
However, the introduction of Hawk-Eye is not without its drawbacks. The most significant
barrier is its cost. Installing and maintaining the system requires a large financial investment. This
creates a “technological gap,” where top competitions are played under different standards than
lower or grassroots-level games. Critics argue this destroys the universal nature of sport. Another
criticism centers on the disruption(破坏) of the game’s natural rhythm. In sports like tennis and
volleyball, challenges can interrupt play, sometimes breaking a player’s pace. Meanwhile, the
“human element,” with all its imperfections, is seen by some as a part of the sports drama.
Finally, the system’s reliability is, in itself, a point of argument. While highly accurate,
Hawk-Eye is not perfect. It is a statistical system but not an absolute measure. The 2020 “ghost
goal” incident in an English football match served as a stark reminder of its limitations. This event
highlighted the danger of placing blind faith in technology and reopened the debate about whether
the final decision should always rest with the on-field official.
32. What’s the writing purpose of paragraph1?
A. To introduce the topic. B. To give an example.
C. To make a comparison. D. To reach a conclusion.
33. Which of the following is the greatest advantage of eagle eye technology?
A. Visualization B. Timeliness.
C. Accuracy. D. Entertainment.
34. What is the author’s attitude towards Hawk-eye technology?
A. Favorable. B. Supportive. C. Critical. D. Optimistic.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Hawk-eye technology —a double-edged sword in sports.
B. Hawk-eye technology —a huge compromise of technology in sports.
C. Hawk-eye technology —the perfect connection of technology and sports.
D. Hawk-eye technology —a classic example of technology leading humanity.

In the journey of education, many students believe that intelligence is fixed —you’re either
born smart or you’re not. However, modern research tells a different story. Learning is not just
about raw talent; it’s a skill that can be improved. The first step towards becoming a more
effective learner is to change your mindset. Instead of seeing challenges as threats to your growth,
view them as opportunities to grow. 36 The fundamental shift enables you to embrace
difficulties, persist in the face of difficulties, and achieve more.
37 Many students fall into the trap of passive learning, such as rereading textbooks or
highlighting notes, which often creates a meaningless repetition. Instead , you should engage with
the material by asking questions, summarizing in your own words, or teaching it to someone else.
Another scientifically-backed strategy is spaced repetition. It’s actually a key part of the
learning process. 38 However, the information will likely disappear from your memory
shortly after. A more effective approach is to review the material at increasing intervals.
Effective learning also requires smart time management. It’s not about how long you study,
but how well you study. 39 By focusing intensely for a short period, you can often
accomplish more than in several hours of distracted work.
Finally, never underestimate the importance of your physical well-being. Adequate sleep is
crucial for memory consolidation, the process where your brain strengthens and organizes
memories from the day. Similarly, a balanced diet and regular exercise enhance cognitive
functions like attention and problem-solving. 40 They are the foundation upon which all your
mental efforts are built, ensuring your brain is in the best possible condition to learn and grow.
A. This belief is known as a growth mindset.
B. The next step is to abandon passive learning.
C. Followed is to adopt active learning strategies.
D. Therefore, don’t view sleep or exercise as a luxury.
E. Preparing for an exam the night before might help you pass the test.
F. Studying for many hours without a break is often a sign of great dedication.
G. You could break your study time into focused sessions separated by short breaks.

阅读下面材料,在空白处填入 1 个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
The road 56 success is never smooth. Behind every achievement lies countless failures
that most people never see. Take Thomas Edison, 57 is famous for inventing the light bulb. He
made over 1,000 unsuccessful attempts before finally 58 (create) a working bulb. When

work.” This mindset is what 59 (separate) successful people from others.
Success is not measured by how many times you fall, 60 by how many times you get

The most important life lesson I have ever learned was in my first year in middle school. I was
12 years old at the time and life was going great, I had tons of friends and I felt like nothing could
bring me down. However, that all changed when I met Julian. I sat next to Julian in my English
class. He wasn't quiet by any means, but for some reason, he went out of his way not to talk to me.
I couldn't understand what his problem was, but I just ignored it and focused on school. I had
plenty of friends, so why did I need to worry about the person who didn't seem to like me?
As the weeks went by, I began to notice something unsettling. Julian always seemed to be staring
at my mouth. Even when I was talking to others, he was staring. After a few days, it really started
to disturb me. So the next day, I decided to talk to him about it.
As my mom was dropping me off the next morning, I noticed Julian getting out of his car behind
us. He seemed normal except that he was making a hand gesture to his mom, who then did the
same gesture back, I watched as he ran into school and I ran in after him, feeling more confused
than ever. “Hey, Julian,” I called out to him but he didn’t turn around, so I figured he was just
ignoring me again. This time, however, I ran up to him and tapped him on the shoulder. He turned
around and smiled at me. I was really confused. How could someone who so obviously ignored
me a few moments ago but now act as if nothing was wrong? “Why do you keep staring at my
mouth all the time?” I asked him directly.

(1)续写词数应为 150 个左右;

M: Good afternoon. Finding everything okay?
W: Oh, I’m looking at your computers. You have many different machines here. Could you tell me
something about them?
M: Er…these two with large monitors are the latest and fastest. But this one is the most popular.
The monitor’s a bit smaller, though.
W: Oh, this one’s so much less expensive. How come?
M: There’s a sale this week on this model.
W: Is it hard to set up at home?
M: Oh no, certainly not. The instruction explains everything.

W: Okay.
Text 8
W: So many beautiful stamps! Bill, it must have taken you at least five years to collect them.
M: Well, I started collecting stamps nine years ago, when I was in grade seven. You can find a
wealth of information from stamps. For example, if you compare these two stamps, you can see
the country name change.
W: Yeah, that’s amazing! Holding the stamp in my hand is just like holding a little piece of
history.
M: Exactly! You can always learn something interesting from collecting stamps, whether it is
history, animals, plants, or buildings. That was why I took up this hobby, though later I also made
a lot of friends at the clubs.
W: But now we have email. Will this hobby still live on?
M: Sure! Emails make stamps rarer and more valuable.
55905406356350031508706077585001940560977519000W: I see. But it sounds like an expensive hobby.
M: Not really. Usually selections of stamps cost only a few dollars. Besides, stamps grow in value
very quickly. A good, solid, detailed collection can be worth serious money.
W: So stamp collecting is more than a hobby. It can be a business.
M: You said it.
Text 9
W: How did you become an artist, Dan?
M: As a child, I loved to draw. You know, I was born and educated in Paris. My uncle was a
school art teacher. And he often took me to art museums. I guess that’s how I became interested in
art, and by the time I was ten, I knew I wanted to be an artist.
W: Did you like to look at other artists’ work?
M: I used to be a big fan of Andy Warhol. Then I discovered that Jackson Pollock spoke most
deeply to me.
W: But your painting is nothing like Pollock’s.
M: I know. But after I studied his work for some time, I learned that his sense of freedom was the
key. This freed me and helped me develop my own way of painting.
W: Well, you’ve certainly succeeded in doing that. What’s next for you, Dan?
M: I have stayed in New York for nearly six years now, and I need a change. So I’m planning to
spend some time in East Asia.
W: Why is that?
M: The art scene there is very exciting. I’ll visit Beijing and see Chinese paintings, like the ones
by Qi Baishi. In fact, I’m thinking of studying in an art college there.

W: Hello everyone. This is a picture of my room at home. I’ve had this room since I was in the
fifth grade. My parents said I could do anything I wanted with it. I picked the paint colors for the
walls. One wall is green, one is pale grey, and the rest is white, which makes the room seem
bigger. I do feel disappointed that my room is so small. Mom suggested the platform bed and
built-in corner desk. But still there isn’t room for my friends and me to sit in here. So mostly I just
sleep, read or get ready to go out. My shoes are put on shelves, dresses hung on the door. I like my
room clean and tidy. I’ve put away most of my childhood things, but I’ve kept some. It’s very
important for me to have my own space. If I’m away at school, I usually leave the door open. But
if it is shut, I’d like my parents to knock.

To my great surprise, Julian explained to me that he was partially deaf. He couldn’t catch every
word of what others were saying just by listening. That was why he had been constantly staring
at my mouth. He further explained, “Unless I see your lips moving, it’s really hard for me to
understand what you’re saying.” Feeling a deep sense of shame for misjudging him, I said in an
apologetic tone, “I'm really sorry for not realizing the challenges you were facing.” I also
promised him that if he ever needed help, I would be more than willing to assist.
From that day on, our relationship began to change. We started sitting together during lunch
breaks and cooperating on group projects. I made a conscious effort to speak clearly and face
him directly so that he could read my lips more easily. Years flying by, this special friendship

as the big lesson that he taught me. He showed me even if we misjudged someone, it only took a
simple question to clear up the misunderstanding and form an unexpected friendship.
