Outside the back of the supermarket, an elderly lady stood in the cold holding a basket of
flowers. “Would you like some flowers? They cost $3 a bunch ,” she asked me when I was
walking past and I politely responded,“No, thank you.” Then I walked away and went inside the
supermarket.
I walked around the supermarket searching for the things I needed. I couldn’t help thinking of
that day standing in the cold with her flowers. I wondered about her unknown story.
Then I had my own personal struggles. As a poor blogger (博 主 ), I had to budget for
everything and even $3 was a lot for me. But it wasn’t my first thought when she asked me about
buying her flowers. My first thought was that I didn’t have the cash but not as an excuse. I’d not
carried cash with me for a few years.
When I went to the checkout counter to pay with my card, I asked for $3 cash out. With a
sigh of relief, I was glad that the staff member handed me $3. I walked away and I found the lady
around the corner of the supermarket.
“Sorry, I didn’t have cash on me just now. But I’d like to buy some of your flowers.”
As I had a closer look in her basket I saw the bunch of flowers I had admired briefly during
our first encounter. I also saw two small pots of plants that were beautiful and healthy. Although I
didn’t have a great thumb, I loved them deeply. She told me their names and some details about
them. I chose the bunch of flowers I had first sighted. I gave her $3 as she handed me the flowers.
She said thank you to me.

M: I think some of them do. although they speak English with a heavy accent.(14)
W: Ha-ha! How's yours? Someone told me you'll take English classes this summer. (15)M: Yes, I
will, but only because my parents want me to.(15) You know I'm not a hard-working student in
our school.
W: I know that very well. By the way, there will be a Korean band in town next week. Shall we go
see them? (16)

This notice is for all the students at our school. From next month everyone should wear new
uniforms. The old ones can be returned to the clothes shop at the school,(17) and students will
receive the new ones. The new uniforms will be in black, blue and red. (18) There will also be
another uniform for the PE class. At the moment, there are more uniforms for girls than for boys.
So the boys may have to wait until the middle of the month.(19) Until then, they can keep their old
clothes, but don't damage them. Damaged clothes can't be returned to the shop. If students damage
or lose their clothes, they will have to pay for the new uniforms.(20) Please be careful, take care of
your belongings, and please report immediately if you see the lost clothes somewhere.
