Colette Maze has been playing the piano for over a century. She practices four hours a day and her fingers
never tire. Music is her spiritual food. The piano, her passion and her friend, instills a sense of wonder in life each
day, making her a source of inspiration to all.
Colette Maze was born in Paris in 1914. She started playing the piano at the age of five. As a young student,
she was taught a technique by the legendary piano master Alfred Cortot, which focuses on relaxing the arms and
hands when playing. To this day, the manner in which Colette Maze touches the piano while playing the tender
music of Robert Schumann and Claude Debussy is still unusual and attractive.
Contrary to the social conventions of the times, Maze decided to pursue music as a career. “She decided she
was an artist, a musician, not a housewife, so she married the piano,” said her son Fabrice Maze. Later she became
a piano teacher and a single mother with great difficulty. The piano always brings her solace. “Music is an affective

Should we allow modern buildings to be built next to older buildings in a historic area of a city In order to
answer this question, we must first examine whether people really want to preserve the historic feel of an area.
Not all historical buildings are attractive. However, there may be other reasons — for example, economic reasons
— why they should be preserved. So, let us assume (假 设 ) that historical buildings are both attractive and
important to the majority of people. What should we do then if a new building is needed
In my view, new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style. Indeed, there are many
examples in my own hometown of Tours where modern designs have been placed very successfully next to old
buildings. As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not affect its surroundings too much, it often
improves the attractiveness of the area.
It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt the area they are in, but the same can be
said of some old buildings too. Yet people still speak against new buildings in historic areas. I think this is simply
because people are naturally conservative and do not like change.
Although we have to respect people’s feelings as fellow users of the buildings, I believe that it is the duty of
the architect and planner to move things forward. If we always reproduced what was there before, we would all
still be living in caves. Thus, I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something
fresh and different, even though that might be the more risky choice.

Talking out loud to yourself is totally normal — and even beneficial. Gary Lupyan, a psychology (心理学)
teacher, says it can help you solve problems and do tasks better. In one of his studies, people were asked to search
for different objects like a fork in random photos. When participants said the name of what they were looking for
out loud, they were able to find it much faster than when they didn’t. This is because saying the name keeps what it
looks like fresh in your mind while searching.
Self-talk can be encouraging, too, Lupyan points out. In another study, basketball players performed faster and
better when they talked to themselves out loud in a positive or helpful way. It can help you stay focused, especially
in a multi-step situation. “Language is good at arranging steps,” he says. “It helps people stay on task and know
when to switch to the next part.”
Another psychology teacher, Brinthaupt, thinks self-talk is like a tool to adjust your emotions. It can guide you
to your goals and give you useful feedback. You might use it to criticize yourself, praise yourself, or plan your next
move — like practicing what to say before meeting someone new, or cheering yourself up if you regret what you
said.
Talking out loud can be a way to let off steam. For example, saying bad words out loud can help you feel
better, which can release your bad emotion. Surprisingly, it can help in social aspects. Self-talk blurs (使模糊) the
line between personal and interpersonal communication. It makes the line between talking to yourself and talking to
others unclear, letting people know what you think or feel directly or indirectly.

Colette Maze has been playing the piano for over a century. She practices four hours a day and her fingers
never tire. Music is her spiritual food. The piano, her passion and her friend, instills a sense of wonder in life each
day, making her a source of inspiration to all.
Colette Maze was born in Paris in 1914. She started playing the piano at the age of five. As a young student,
she was taught a technique by the legendary piano master Alfred Cortot, which focuses on relaxing the arms and
hands when playing. To this day, the manner in which Colette Maze touches the piano while playing the tender
music of Robert Schumann and Claude Debussy is still unusual and attractive.
Contrary to the social conventions of the times, Maze decided to pursue music as a career. “She decided she

Should we allow modern buildings to be built next to older buildings in a historic area of a city In order to
answer this question, we must first examine whether people really want to preserve the historic feel of an area.
Not all historical buildings are attractive. However, there may be other reasons — for example, economic reasons
— why they should be preserved. So, let us assume (假 设 ) that historical buildings are both attractive and
important to the majority of people. What should we do then if a new building is needed
In my view, new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style. Indeed, there are many
examples in my own hometown of Tours where modern designs have been placed very successfully next to old
buildings. As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not affect its surroundings too much, it often
improves the attractiveness of the area.
It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt the area they are in, but the same can be
said of some old buildings too. Yet people still speak against new buildings in historic areas. I think this is simply
because people are naturally conservative and do not like change.
Although we have to respect people’s feelings as fellow users of the buildings, I believe that it is the duty of
the architect and planner to move things forward. If we always reproduced what was there before, we would all
still be living in caves. Thus, I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something
fresh and different, even though that might be the more risky choice.

Talking out loud to yourself is totally normal — and even beneficial. Gary Lupyan, a psychology (心理学)
teacher, says it can help you solve problems and do tasks better. In one of his studies, people were asked to search
for different objects like a fork in random photos. When participants said the name of what they were looking for
