A 13-year-old boy in Western Australia saved his mother and two younger siblings by swimming for hours to raise the alarm after the family was swept out to sea. The Appelbee family were on inflatable(可充气的) paddleboards and a kayak in Geographe Bay· when strong winds pushed them offshore on Friday afternoon.
Joanne Appelbee, 47, asked her son Austin to take the kayak back for help, but his boat took on water, forcing him to swim 4 km to shore. Fighting rough seas, Austin wore a life jacket at first but removed it after two hours to swim more efficiently.“I was thinking in my head I was going to make it through,” he told ABC News. To keep his spirits up, he recalled“thinking of Thomas the Tank Engine, a children's TV character known for his‘can-do’attitude”. Upon reaching the beach, he collapsed, and then raced 2 km to call emergency services.“I need helicopters. I need planes. I need boats. My family's out at sea,” he said on the phone. After the call, he passed out trom exhaustion.
Police launched a multi-agency search and rescue operation. Around 8:30 pm, Joanne and her children, aged 12 and 8, were found clinging to a paddleboard about 14.5k m offshore and were rescued by a volunteer marine vessel. Austin had been taken to hospital and learned minutes later his family was safe.“It was a moment I will never forget,” he said.
Joanne described the outcome as“an absolute perfect ending” with all children well and unharmed. Rescue commander Paul Bresland said Austin's detailed description of their equipment proved invaluable. Police praised the family for wearing life jackets and hailedAustin's determination and courage, which ultimately saved the lives of his mother and siblings. Austin returned to school this week with the aid of crutches after his special experience.
24. Why did Austin take off his life jacket during the swim
A. To enhance his swimming efficiency.
B. To get rid of it due to the exhaustion.
C. To avoid the damage caused by rough waves.
D. To escape faster after seeing something scary.
25. What can we learn about Austin during his swim
A. He was distracted by worries about his family.
B. He was confident and never doubted his success.
C. He focused on the technical aspects of swimming.
D. He used positive thinking to cope with the challenges.
26. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Austin was praised for his physical strength in the rescue.
B. Austin helped in the rescue with his resolve and bravery.
C. Austin was the only family member in a life jacket.
D. Austin returned to school uninjured right after.
27. Where can the text most likely be found
A. In a travel blog. B. In a news report.
C. In a medical journal. D. In a boating safety manual.

Whales, among Earth's most intelligent species, boast distinct communication systems that vary even within populations. A crucial question thus arises: Could humans engage in sound-related interactions with them Researchers from UC Davis’ Whale-SETI team and theAlaska Whale Foundation have explored this with humpback whales, yielding fascinating findings.
In a key experiment, scientists recorded a humpback contact call called a“whup” and played it underwater near their vessel. A whale named Twain actively participated in the call-and-response: Each human“whup” prompted her own response, described as a“conversation”in their PeerJ paper. Josephine Hubbard, a study author, noted the call might loosely mean“hello” or a location signal, emphasizing Twain was responding to human-produced whale signals.
Crucially, Twain's interaction was voluntary. She circled the boat, stayed close to the speakers, and continued signaling after the 20-minute playback (limited by permits) ended.“She could have left anytime—— this wasn t a captive environment,” Hubbard explained, highlighting that whales’ willingness to communicate depends on individual character and environment, much as human beings display different degrees of extroversion.
Additional evidence supports this. Humpbacks often produce“bubble rings” near boats,a playful behavior suggesting communicative intent, as Hubbard's team documented inMarine Mammal Science. Besides, gray whales in Mexico's San Ignacio lagoon are famously friendly, approaching boats and allowing gentle contact—— this behavior, not food-driven, may be passed down through generations, though not all gray whales exhibit it.
In conclusion, these encounters confirm some individual whales are willing to engage with humans. As we deepen our understanding of their communication modes and messages, we gain invaluable insights into these marine giants, bridging the gap between human and non-human intelligence.
28. What can we know about the research in the first paragraph
A. It is the first study of its kind.
B. It has proved whales understand human sounds.
C. It chooses humpback whales for their intelligence.
D. It explores a problem on human-animal interaction.
29. According to Hubbard, what was significant about Twain's behavior
A. She remained near the sound source by choice.
B. She tried to destroy the underwater speakers.
C. She only responded because she was fed.
D. She was trapped in a net near the boat.
30. What does the underlined word“extroversion” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. The habit of living alone.
B. The quality of being sociable.
C. The ability to swim long distances.
D. The fear of communicating with strangers.
31. Which would be the most suitable title for the text
A. Humpback Whales: The Most Intelligent Mammals
B. A Groundbreaking Experiment in Marine Biology
C. A“Conversation” Between Humans and Whales
D. Whales’ Communication: Bubble Rings and Calls

Keeping food cold often comes with a hidden problem: Traditional ice melts, leaving patches of water that can make drinks watery, damage products, or even spread dangerous bacteria. To tackle this issue, researchers at UC Davis have created jelly ice, a reusable and biodegradable alternative that cools like ice but never melts into liquid.
Composed of 90% water, this innovative material can be molded into various shapes. It remains solid below freezing, becomes soft at room temperature, and can be reused by simply rinsing(冲洗) and refreezing. Study researcher Jiahan Zou noted that jelly ice achieves up to80% of the cooling efficiency of regular ice of identical shape and size, and it sustains heat absorbance through multiple freeze-thaw(解冻) cycles: a key advantage over traditional ice.
The project began when UC Davis food scientists noticed the heavy ice usage in fish-processing plants and the risk of bacteria spread via meltwater. Seeking a safer choice for grocery seafood displays, they turned to gelatin, a food-safe material whose protein structure traps water during freezing and thawing.
After years of testing, they perfected a simple, one-step method of producing jelly ice.Made from natural material and biodegradable after use, jelly ice does not contribute to microplastic pollution and may even enhance tomato plant growth when add to soil.
Beyond grocery stores, it could be widely applied, such as preserving medical supplies during shipping, reducing waste in biotechnology, and delivering reliable cooling in water-scarce regions, offering a sustainable solution that lowers pollution risks and supports agriculture.
While licenses for the technology have been secured, jelly ice is not yet available to the public, requiring further market analysis, product design, and large-scale production testing.Inspired by its success, the team is now studying other natural polymers(聚合物), including plant-based proteins such as soy, to see if similar innovations can be developed.
32. What is a major drawback of conventional ice
A. It is too expensive for industrial use.
B. Its solid form is difficult to transport.
C. It produces meltwater that may cause harm.
D. Its cooling efficiency decreases over time.
33. Why did the researchers choose gelatin to make jelly ice
A. It works better than common ice in cooling.
B. It is a cost-effective material for mass production.
C. It is the most commonly used material in food safety.
D. Its natural structure can hold water during freeze-thaw.
34. What is the author's attitude towards the future of jelly ice
A. Skeptical. B. Critical. C. Indifferent. D. Optimistic.
35. What is the main purpose of the text
A. To inform readers of a new sustainable cooling material.
B. To persuade readers to stop using traditional ice immediately.
C. To compare the cooling efficiency of different natural polymers.
D. To promote the research work of UC Davis.

When Hurricane Helene swept through North Carolina, it left behind a trail of destruction that seemed impossible to overcome. Houses were ruined into piles of wood;roads were buried under mud; and countless families lost everything they owned. And for many, it felt as though the storm had stolen not just their possessions, but their memories too.
After the deadly hurricane in September, Taylor Schenker's house weathered Helene well, but her friend's entire home was destroyed by flooding from the Swannanoa River.Schenker and her friend went for a walk to check out the home. They spent about four hours digging through the mud, looking for any belongings of hers they could find, because her house actually just didn't exist anymore. And during that process, Schenker found some photographs along with some clothes and an American flag along the bank, which seemed to be waiting to be reunited with their owners.
Thinking about the photos that night, Schenker couldn't shake the thought of the memories they represented. Determined to protect and restore these pieces of family history, she returned the next day to discover more photos. The work was challenging. Each photograph she found required gentle care; Some were so damaged that they had to be carefully separated from each other; others needed special treatment to bring back their colors. Soon, she realized she had gathered about 200 photographs belonging to different families. There was a photo of a middle school basketball team, a photo of a beloved dog, an old wedding photo of a bride and a bridegroom, and so on.“You take photos because you have a moment you want to remember, so they did all seem just special,” Schenker said.
Realizing how many important family memories she now had in her possession, she created a simple social media page titled“Photos from Helene”—— an online lost-and-found.Her goal was simple: to reunite these precious items with their rightful owners.

(Text 10)
W: My name's Sophia. I'm going to show you my trip to London. Although the underground and the taxi are fast ways into central London, my family decided to take the bus, so we could look out of the window while traveling. Unfortunately, there was so much fog that we couldn't see clearly when we were on the London Eye. Even though the weather was bad, it didn't stop us from having a good time. Usually, you can experience four seasons all in one week in London! It rains just a minute ago, but then it becomes sunny. There wereChristmas trees everywhere. There were also many Christmas activities. Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park, one of the most popular ones, was appealing to me. After a day of exploring,we ate out in a Chinese restaurant. London is multicultural with cuisines from all over the world. I hope you enjoy following me around London. Please comment below and let me know what your favorite part is. Thanks for watching today.

The response was slow at first, but then a miracle happened. A woman named Sarah came across the page and recognized a photo of her late grandparents’ wedding— one she thought was lost forever. Filled with excitement, she contacted Schenker, who immediately agreed to return it. When Schenker handed her the photograph, Sarah's eyes welled up with tears. She explained that the photo, which had survived the disaster, felt like a final gift from her grandparents. Sarah hugged Schenker tightly, whispering,“You didn't just save a picture; you gave me back lots of good memories.”
As weeks passed, more reunions followed. Families got back vacation photos, graduation pictures, and pictures of loved ones. Each reunion was a celebration of human strength. The page soon became a symbol of healing, bridging gaps left by the storm. Moreover, Schenker's efforts encouraged others to join her, creating a network of volunteers trying to return photos. Schenker realized then that while the storm had stolen much, it could not erase the memories that connected them all. In fact, she was giving back pieces of people's hearts, bringing the community back together, one memory at a time.
