AI Is Gobbling Up Memory Chips, Pushing Smartphone Prices Higher
AI 挤占芯片产能或将推高智能手机价格
According to Bloomberg (彭博社), a severe global memory chip shortage has gripped (严重影响到) the technology industry in 2026. Fueled by the explosive growth of artificial intelligence, the shortage has sent chip prices sharply higher and **disrupted** (扰乱) nearly all categories of everyday electronic products.
AI giants including Google and Microsoft are expanding data centers at a fierce pace, demanding massive supplies of HBM (高带宽内存,一种专为AI计算设计的高速内存芯片). Leading producers such as Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron have reallocated (重新分配) their core capacity to high-margin (利润) AI-focused chips, sharply reducing output of DRAM (动态随机存取存储器,广泛用于手机、电脑等设备的基础内存) — the basic memory widely used in smartphones, laptops and automobiles. Certain DRAM grades have surged (猛涨) 75% in price in just one month, a crisis dubbed "RAM geddon" (内存末日,模仿“Armageddon”末日一词) by industry insiders.
The shortage has created far-reaching effects worldwide. Smartphone prices continue to rise, while low-cost models are at risk of disappearing gradually. Sony is delaying (推迟) the launch of its next-generation PlayStation console (游戏主机), and Nintendo is preparing price hikes (上涨) for its upcoming Switch 2. Chinese mobile brands also face mounting cost pressures, preparing price adjustments and structural (结构性的) production cuts, especially for low-end models. As memory chips serve as essential components(零部件) for vehicles, communication devices and digital tools, nearly all connected industries are under growing strain (压力).
Experts emphasize that this is not a **temporary** (暂时的) supply issue, but a long-term **structural** (结构性的) change driven by AI advancement. Even as some manufacturers plan to expand production, the tight memory chip supply is expected to last. The crisis reveals how AI is profoundly **reshaping** (重塑) the global industrial chain, and how technological progress now shapes economies, industries and daily life at an unprecedented (前所未有的) scale.
4. What is the direct cause of the rising prices of electronic products according to the passage
A. The overproduction of AI-powered devices.
B. The slow expansion of memory chip production.
C. The severe global shortage of memory chips.
D. The increased cost of transporting electronics.
5. The word "gobbling up" in the title is closest in meaning to __________.
A. consuming in large quantities B. destroying gradually
C. examining carefully D. storing securely
6. Which of the following is NOT a result of the memory chip shortage mentioned in the text
A. Smartphone prices keep going up.
B. Some low-end phone models may disappear.
C. Game console launches are being delayed.
D. Traditional car industries are being replaced.
7. What can we infer about Chinese mobile brands from Paragraph 3
A. They will soon stop producing low-end models.
B. They are under growing pressure and adjusting their strategies.
C. They have solved the shortage by expanding production.
D. They depend less on memory chips than foreign brands.
8. What is the main idea of the passage
A. AI's huge demand for memory chips causes a global shortage and affects many industries.
B. Technology companies are competing to develop new types of memory chips.
C. The rise of AI is making smartphones more powerful but more expensive.
D. Global efforts are being made to increase the production of memory chips.

I moved away quickly and quietly. I ran fast, not thinking about the direction I was taking. Suddenly, I saw something move quickly from tree to tree.
What was it, whether a bear or a man or a monkey Silver himself appeared less terrible to me now.

“No, and Flint is dead. But there are some of Flint’s hands aboard.”
“You see a man... with one... leg ” Ben asked in a nervous voice, with his pale face and scared eyes.
“You mean Silver He once worked as a cook on the ship.” I added. “Now, he is also on the island to find Flint’s treasure. He wants to kill us and take over the ship.”
“Good boy,” he said, “I was on Flint’s ship when he buried (埋) the treasure, he and six strong seamen. But, when he returned, he himself alone, and the six all died. How he made it, not a man except him could make out. It was a battle, a murder, and a sudden death— him against six.”
Suddenly, the noise of explosions (爆炸) from an island stopped our talking...

I once gave a lesson to a group of primary school students for a TV programme.
I suggested that we create small gardens.
First, I asked the students 1 their favourite place in the school. Once there, I let them try hard to empty their minds. Then I had each of them describe their experiences of nature in a small garden.
In a box of about one and a half by two feet, they were free to organize-soil, stones, leaves and grass. Even as an 2 garden designer, I was impressed with their imagination. Flowers like these are all around you.
One child created “water” that flowed into a “lake”; a child put grass in a way to represent “wind”; and yet 3 child tried hard to create shade…These children were often busy doing their schoolwork. That was why they took great interest when they created their small gardens. They spent a wonderful time together with nature.
Try spending time with nature yourself. If you notice a stone 4 on the ground, pick it up and hold it. When you see beautiful flowers by the side of the road, stop and enjoy the 5 smell.
Then, inside your mind, create a small garden of your own. It will relax you.

Recently, an online song called No Ambition 《没出息》 1 (become) popular quickly across the Taiwan Strait (海峡). Its secondary creations from Wang Bo have got over 100 2 (million) views, from mainland social media to Taiwan’s online platforms. It seems like a “meme (表情包) work”, but it holds the shared ideas of people on both sides.
The song comes from a public speech given a few years ago. Mainland netizens cut its sharp words, then added an attention-getting voice 3 (make) the song. Its popularity comes from 4 (touch) lyrics (歌词): “We should have been calm and easy. But now we are in peace, stumbling along... Why are you crying No ambition!” When the lyrics match the speaker slapping the table 5 (angry), the contrast makes the song memorable.
The song’s success is not by chance. It shows shared 6 (culture) roots (根源) of both sides. Its spread follows a clear way “Taiwan materials →mainland creations→popular on both sides”. The speech clips (片段) 7 (create) again by mainland netizens. Later, the song went back to Taiwan and started a creation trend. This voluntary folk interaction shows that both sides share 8 same culture.
People on both sides connect with the lyrics for their real-life description. The difference 9 “calm” and “struggling” tells middle-aged people’s helplessness facing life pressure. Mainland listeners sigh (叹息), “It feels like talking about my calm.”
10 some tried to make it political (政治的), netizens still joined in creations happily. Taiwan’s China Times said this folk cultural exchange is natural-over-interpreting it is “no ambition”. Online pop culture always builds a communication bridge.

10.根据“I’m poor Ben Gunn, and I haven’t spoken with a man these three years.”可知,本·冈恩被留在岛上三年。
11.“not a man except him could make out”这说明弗林特以一敌六杀死六名水手的方式极其隐秘,没人知道他是如何做到的,暗示了弗林特的阴险狡诈和超强武力。

Version 1:
Different ways of travelling may give us different feelings. As for me, I like in-person travel better. Here are my reasons. First, real travel lets me use all my senses—like smelling fresh flowers or touching cool river water. Second, meeting friendly local people makes trips unforgettable.
Last summer, I joined a hiking trip to a mountain. After climbing for hours, I saw the clear sky with white clouds on the mountaintop. I felt so excited and this could never happen while watching a video at home.
Travel isn’t just about seeing new places. It’s about improving ourselves through real experiences.
Version 2:
Different ways of travelling may give us different feelings. For me, I am crazier about online tours. Here are two reasons. First, it is much easier to travel online. I can visit places of interest around the world just at home. Second, it saves time and money.
Last month, I had a great online tour of the Great Wall. On the screen, I enjoyed the wonderful view and learned about the long history in only a few minutes.
Online tours open a new window for me to get close to the outside world. I can’t wait to try them more!
