Scotland
Dear Marilyn ,
Scotland! Wow!!! What a fantastic place! I’m having a great time. I’m afraid that I started off
badly by making a fool of myself. I was standing in the great old Bell Tower looking across the lake
at the hills on the other side. This rather handsome guy happened to be standing next to me, so I
casually(随意地)said, “ It’s really beautiful here in England.” Do you know what he replied “Well,
why don’t you go there then ” Then he laughed and explained that he was used to foreigners’ making
mistakes about that. After that bad start, we got on really great, though.
B
If you check the Internet for the saying “Don’t do unto others what you don’t want others to do
unto you”, chances are that it will be credited to(归功于) Confucius. Its variations can be found in
many cultures and can be easily understood as a basic rule of conduct in a relationship based on
mutual(相互的) respect.
Fergus told me lots about Scotland. I’d already noticed the unusual names: Fergus, Angus,
Hamish for the guys and Ina, Gillian and Aileen for girls. They also usually have family names that
begin with Mac or Mc — Mackay, McDonald and the like. The Mc or Mac stands for “son of”.
Anyway, Fergus is a Campbell. That’s another typical Scottish name and he is from an old
Scottish family. You know that the Scots have their own traditions with kilts(短褶裙) and all that.
Fergus showed me his family’s tartan(花格图案).
Now here is an incoming email from an unknown lady. She’s offering me a chance to give a
course in some public department in-house university. For me the interest is limited, but the mail is
very polite.
The offer does not fit my schedule nor how I’d like to make use of my very little private time,
but in order to be polite and show appreciation of the opportunity, I will of course answer.
The irony(讽刺) is that immediately after my answer was sent, an automatic mail message
came back, explaining that my correspondent(通讯员) wants to protect herself from any unwanted
email and therefore, if I wish to overcome the digital blockade(封锁),I have to go through a
procedure to identify myself. If I don’t, the time spent on my polite reply will be lost as well as my
nice guy reputation.
I tried some really strange food today. When we had lunch together, Fergus practically forced
me to taste something called haggis. That was the first and the last time for me. I have no idea what it
is made of and I don’t think I want to.
Everybody here is very friendly, not just Fergus. By the way, all that talk about the Scots being
mean is not right. Fergus is certainly the opposite(相反的). He says the jokes about the Scots have all
been invented by the English, their traditional enemy.
Hmm, isn’t it ironic This lady, protecting herself from unwanted emails, doesn’t apply the same
rule to herself and increases the inconvenience for the people she’s more or less asking a favor from.
So I went through the procedure and spent more time. I then felt this could be shared as a post on
my blog and put in much more time .
Tomorrow Fergus is taking me to Glasgow. Can you believe it! I thought he would just say
goodbye and walk off. But he really seems interested. Anyway, I’m looking forward to seeing some
bright lights and discos after all this peace and quiet. I love it here but there are more sheep than
people. I hope I’ll have some other sides of life in Scotland to report after tomorrow. Keep your
fingers crossed! I’ll keep you posted.
Thank you, lady. If you happen to read this post, please think about this saying: Don’t do unto
others what you don’t want others to do unto you. And check your anti-spam(反垃圾邮件) policy.
Love,

close contact through activities such as wild food foraging (觅食), a study shows.
According to the study, a lack of knowledge and appreciation of local flora(植物群) results from
less time spent with plants and the knowledge and appreciation of it is not an inborn human quality.
Due to this, people frequently believe that plants are “less alive” than animals.
B . The factors leading to plant blindness.
C . The impact of urbanization on the family.
D . The spread of plant knowledge at school.
Researchers analyzed 326 articles published in academic journals between 1998 and 2020. Most
showed people had more interest, paid more attention and were more likely to remember information
about animals. There was no conclusive evidence that this was a characteristic that humans were born
with; rather, the reduced experience of nature in urbanized(城市化的) civilizations seemed to be the
root of the problem. If individuals had regular contact with plants, it was not unavoidable.
The research shows a drop in related experience with plants leads to a cyclical process of
inattention. This can be addressed through first-hand experience of edible(可食用的) and useful
plants in local environments.

Most of us are aware of “Is the glass half full or half empty ” litmus test. If you pick the former,
you’ re an “optimist(乐观主义者)”; otherwise, you’re a “pessimist”. It’s not a black-or-white test, but
it can measure how one sees life.
According to psychologist Lissy Ann Puno, most of us grow up wanting to be an optimist — a
person who can see the good in any situation and can stay hopeful when facing challenges. For some
people, though, life happens and they start to see the glass half-empty instead. Pessimists tend to see
the wrong in every situation, and blame external factors when things aren’t going their way.
Being continuously fed with bad news and disappointments can turn optimistic children into
adults that are critical of almost everything. For some, the shift becomes easier, being raised by
pessimistic parents. Others still remain optimistic, thanks to a positive household growing up.
Studies showed it was common for children — especially when young — not to be able to
identify many species. Plant blindness was reported in teachers as well as students, particularly in
primary teachers who had not graduated in a science subject. Older people had better plant knowledge,
which studies suggest was because they were more likely to have nature-related hobbies.
Thirty-five studies found that modernization or urbanization had an impact on plant knowledge.
The increased dependence on urban services and a cash economy reduced plant foraging. School
attendance and work reduced the time available to spend in the natural environment. These factors
also reduced the time spent with family, negatively impacting the passing down of plant knowledge

This is why developing optimism in young children is important for their development as
adults,” said Lissy Ann. If adopted at an early age, this powerful personality quality can help children
grow into strong adults capable of handling problems with confidence, courage, and hope. What
parent wouldn’t want that for their children

Dear Mike,
I’m sorry to hear that you’ve been addicted to the Internet recently. I really care about you and I
understand the Internet is interesting, but it’s bad for your study and health if you spend too much
time on it.
Here are some useful suggestions for you. First, you can make a daily schedule to control your
online time, like only 30 minutes after finishing homework. Second, take more outdoor activities such
as playing basketball with friends or walking in the park, which can make you forget about the
Internet. Third, develop some hobbies like reading or drawing to enrich your spare time.
I believe you can get rid of Internet addiction if you try your best. I’m always here to help you
and look forward to seeing your progress in study and a healthier you soon.
Yours,
Li Hua

参考范文
Paragraph 1
When Jeanne and her dad came to pick me up, I went with them as promised. On the way to
Mount Wachusett, my heart was beating fast and I was so nervous that I could hardly say a word.
Jeanne talked excitedly about skiing skills and her past competition experiences, while I just nodded
and smiled awkwardly. When we arrived at the ski resort, seeing the snowy slopes, I felt even more
scared. I knew I couldn’t hide the truth any longer, so I took a deep breath and told Jeanne that I had
never skied before and didn’t have time to learn.
Paragraph 2
As I spoke the truth, I felt stupid, but relieved, too. I thought Jeanne would laugh at me or be
angry, but she just smiled and said it was okay. She told me she could teach me skiing step by step.
With Jeanne’s patient guidance, I learned to wear ski gear first, then practice walking on the snow
and finally the basic skiing moves. Although I fell down several times, Jeanne always helped me up
and encouraged me. By the end of the day, I could ski on the gentle slope by myself. We had a great
time and I made a true friend. I realized that honesty is always the best policy.

Text 10
One of the best-known stories in English history is that of King Alfred and the cakes. (18) Children are
taught the story in which Alfred was on the run (在逃) from soldiers who were invading (侵略) his country
from Denmark and Norway. Alfred hid in the house of a poor woman. She asked him to watch her
cakes being baked by the fire. (19) Alfred was thinking about his problems while he was watching the
cakes. So he let the cakes burn and was shouted at by the angry poor woman. No one knows if the story is
really true. Certainly, Alfred was the king of parts of England from 871 to 899 and he did have to fight
off the armies that entered his country. (18) (20) Maybe the poor woman would not know how important
he was. In those days, news did not always travel to places far away. But whether the story is true or false, it is
a good way of helping young people take an interest in the very rich history of their country.
