In Ganzhou, Jiangxi Province,58-year-old Guo Yingxiong is breathing new life into Hakka bamboo carving.
In his workshops, the bamboo seems to come alive with his skilled hands — everyday scenes unfold, like a tea
seller carrying his goods or young lovers sitting by the water. These creations represent more than art. They form a
living bridge between the ancient art of Hakka bamboo carving and the modern world that Guo has upheld (支持)
for over four decades.
Bamboo carving has deep cultural roots. While its origins date back to the Six Dynasties period, the art was
well received by people during the Tang Dynasty, and achieved its golden age during the Ming and Qing Dynasties,
when scholars (学者) praised bamboo for symbolizing strength and honesty. In the Northern Song Dynasty Su Shi
wrote that he would rather dine without meat than live without bamboo. Among regional styles, Hakka bamboo
carving stood out by mixing traditional calligraphy with creative designs. In 2010, it was listed as a provincial-level
intangible cultural heritage in Jiangxi.
Guo’s introduction to the art began young — he learned from his father, who taught him strict rules, like
using only winter-cut bamboos and memorizing over 50 steps to prepare the materials before carving. With tireless
practice, he mastered various carving techniques, establishing himself as a pioneer in preserving and advancing
Jiangxi’s carving heritage.
To keep the tradition alive, Guo opened Ganzhou’s first Hakka bamboo carving workshop in 2017. There. he
made custom pieces and taught students. One of his students, Han Lu, even started studying the craft’s history after
being inspired by him. Besides, he also created smaller, cheaper items like bamboo bookmarks and mixed
traditional skills with modern designs to attract younger people. Through such efforts, he hopes to secure a brighter
future for the art, one careful cut at a time.
24. Why are Guo’s creations mentioned in paragraph 1
A. To praise his excellent carving skills.
B. To show the art’s connection to daily life.
C. To show ancient and modern artistic styles.
D. To stress his efforts to preserve the ancient art.
25. In which period did bamboo carving become popular
A. The Six Dynasties. B. The Tang Dynasty. C. The Ming Dynasty. D. The Song Dynasty.
26. What makes Hakka bamboo carving different from other regional styles
A. Careful and strict practices. B. Simple material preparations.
C. The symbol of bamboo carving. D. A combination of tradition and creativity.
27. How did Guo preserve bamboo carving
A. By teaching people calligraphy. B. By using only winter-cut bamboos.
C. By getting young people involved in it. D. By studying its history with his students.

In recent years, 3D printers have mostly been used to create small, specialized items (物品).This includes
parts for automobiles, airplanes and medical devices. Many consumer products can also be 3D-printed, from
clothes to foods. Now, an increasing number of start-up (新创办的)companies are using 3D printing to build entire
homes. Since the technology is still developing, not many have yet been built. However, the top companies plan to
greatly increase production in the coming years.
The start-up company Icon, based in Austin, Texas, made news in 2018 by completing the first permitted
3D-printed home in the US. At the time, it said the home had been built in just a day. Since then, the company says
it has been developing new technologies in robotics, software and manufacturing materials. It designed its own 3D
printer and said the robot-powered machine could create buildings up to 185 square meters. The printing process
uses a cement-based mixture that Icon says is stronger and saves more money than traditional building materials.
Up to now, Icon has completed 24 3D-printed homes in the US and Mexico. Among them was a community
of 3D-printed homes in a poor neighborhood in Mexico. The company has also completed a series of buildings for
homeless people in Austin. And it says it plans to open America’s first housing development of 3D-printed homes
this summer.
A New York company, SQ4D, also uses 3D printing technology to build homes. In February, the company
showed off a 130-square-meter model home to demonstrate (证明) its printer’s abilities. SQ4D plans to sell its
homes starting at $299, 000. The company has even started listing the homes on the Internet selling site Zillow.
Kirk Andersen is SQ4D’s director of operations. He told Reuters the 3D printer will permit buyers to easily create
their own home design, room by room.
While 3D printing as a home-building method is just getting started, Andersen said others in the construction
industry need to get prepared for big changes. “This is the beginning. This is just scratching the surface,” he said.
28. What can we learn about 3D printing technology from Paragraph 1
A. It is being used for building homes.
B. It enjoys the highest status (地位).
C. It has been perfect already.
D. It helps produce some large and unique items.
29. What feature do 3D-printed homes have when compared with traditional building methods
A. They’re more comfortable. B. They’re more environment-friendly.
C. They’re more complex (复杂的). D. They’re less expensive.
30. What is the main idea of the text
A. The development of smart homes. B. The importance of 3D printers.
C. 3D printing in building homes. D. Construction industry’s future.
31. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear
A. Technology. B. Health. C. Education. D. Environment.

Snow leopards, found in the mountainous regions of 12 Asian countries, including Russia, Nepal, and China,
are facing population decline due to historical hunting and habitat damage. But a new study, published in the
Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, shows that their genetic (基 因 的 ) makeup could also be
influencing their falling population.
These snow leopards are highly adapted to extreme cold and mountainous environments. But there aren’t
many snow leopards left: Population is about 4,500 to 7,500. And because of this small population size, they are
classified as “vulnerable” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species.
“Because their habitat isn’t so suitable for living, human population growth didn’t really affect snow leopards
very much, but climate change will,” says Dmitri Petrov, one of the study’s authors. “Humans don’t need to show
up in their mountains to build or start farming. The climate changes, and it affects everyone and everything, even in
such far areas.”
For this study, researchers made whole-DNA sequencing data (全基因组测序数据) for 37snow leopards. The
study found that many of these snow leopards share the same DNA. However, low genetic difference can cause a
problem for their survival. Snow leopards that have similar DNA are more easily affected by environmental
changes, disease, and hunters, which increases their risk of dying out overall in a changing environment.
The study also showed that fewer snow leopards had potentially harmful DNA. Over time, snow leopards
were able to “clear out” bad genes, allowing the population to remain relatively healthy. However, researchers say
that isn’t enough to protect against climate change, and hope that this study can inform future protection efforts. If
climate change starts getting much worse, then snow leopards might be dying out relatively easily, simply because
climate change has a bad influence on their living space and the total population is so small.
32. What does the author want to tell us in paragraph 1
A. The joint efforts to protect snow leopards.
B. The newly built habitats for snow leopards.
C. The new recovery of snow leopard populations.
D. The new-found cause of snow leopard decline.
33. What does the underlined word “vulnerable” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Easily harmed. B. Difficult to find. C. Highly spread. D. Likely to survive.
34. What is the primary future threat to snow leopards according to Petrov
A. The loss of their own habitat. B. The interaction with human beings.
C. The effect of climate change. D. The competition with other species
35. What is the author’s attitude towards the future of snow leopards
A. Positive. B. Concerned. C. Doubtful. D. Unclear.

Growing up, I wanted to be just like my mom. She was kind and caring, and always made people comfortable
in her presence. For years she was a volunteer in our community. I loved going to the local nursing home to help
with her when I was a child. However, once I became a teenager, I was so busy with my own life that I didn’t think
about helping others.
One particular summer day when I was twelve, Mom came into my room and told me to get up and meet her
at the car. But I had planned to spend the day at the lake with friends. Why did she have to ruin everything At last,
I made my way outside with my mother. Angry and annoyed, I climbed into the car and shut the door loudly. I sat
in silence, too upset to talk. “Tasha, do you know where we are going ” Mom asked calmly. I remained silent.
“Sweetheart, we are going to a children’s shelter (收容所) I have been there before and I think it would benefit
you,” she explained.
I felt a pain slowly form in my stomach. How was I supposed to help there
When we reached the shelter, I was rather surprised. As we approached the front door, wind bells played a
calming tune while trees and flowers welcomed us. Maybe this wasn’t going to be so bad.
Mom rang the doorbell. We were led to the front room, where all of the children were playing. Toys were
spread out across the floor. I noticed a baby whose body was seriously wounded. Most of the children had
noticeable physical scars (疤) such as cuts, burns and scratches. What a terrible life they must have had before they
moved here! My heart sank. As I was looking around, I felt a gentle pull on my shirt.
