Everyone needs friends. How do you have real friendship and keep it
Writer Sally Seaman tells young students some smart ways to find friends. Sally says finding friendship is just like planting a tree. You plant the seed (种子) and take care of it to make it grow.
What makes a good friend It’s not because he or she has money or good looks. A good friend should be kind and patient (有耐心的). For example, if you are in a bad mood (情绪), a good friend should listen to you and do his or her best to help you. But things can’t always be happy. Even the best friends have fights. What should you do when you have a fight with your friend You’d better talk to him or her.
There are three steps to be friends again: say sorry to him or her; tell him or her how you are feeling; tell him or her why you did this or that. Remember that friendship is much more important than some other things in your life.

Prairie dogs (草原犬鼠) are not true dogs at all. They are not big animals, only about the size of a rabbit. You can see them in highland and cold places, like the central and western United States. Although they are not dogs, they bark (叫) like dogs. They get the name from their dog-like barking sound.
Like humans, prairie dogs live with their family. When young babies are born, both dad and mum play a role in taking care of them. Those in the same group work, play and sleep together, like building their burrows (洞穴) and lying in the sun.
Each group lives in its own burrows. Prairie dogs use their sharp claws (爪子) to dig their burrows. They kick the dirt out with their back legs. Then they start to build some “rooms” in the burrows. The “rooms” have different uses (用途). Some can keep them warm in winter. They also have special “rooms” to store food. Some underground “rooms” protect them from animals that might want to hurt them.
Prairie dogs “kiss” one another by touching their front teeth. For them, this is a way to tell if another prairie dog is part of their group or not. They will attack other prairie dogs that are not part of their group.
6.Why do prairie dogs get their name (no more than 6 words)
7.What do prairie dogs in the same group do together (no more than 6 words)

Some people think that friends should be alike, but some other people think that friends should be different. What do you think Should friends be similar or different
Matt:
I think a good friend is like a mirror. You can understand people by knowing their friends. My friend, Stephen, is a great example. We often hang out together because we have similar hobbies and interests. For example, we both love sports. He plays badminton better than I do, so he always wins our matches. Because of that, I try harder when I practise, and now I’m getting better at badminton.
Stephen and I are similar in other ways. He is as serious as me. When we aren’t playing sports, we enjoy reading together. I read more history books than he does, and he reads a lot of novels. We often share interesting books with each other.
Diana:
For me, friends who are different make me better. I think we should respect each other’s differences and learn from each other. For example, I am kind of shy, but my best friend, Yuan Lei, is outgoing. She has a great sense of humour too. Thanks to her, I am becoming more outgoing.
I have another friend, Zhang Yong. He is not afraid to give his opinion (意见), especially when he thinks I am making a mistake. I am less straightforward (坦率的) than he is, but I am glad to have an honest friend.

The Huge Baobab (猴面包树)
One of the most amazing trees in the world is known as the baobab. This kind of tree mainly grows in South Africa and Australia.
Sometimes, it is hard to tell what the name of a tree is because they look the same as each other. But this is not a problem with the baobab. Its appearance is quite different, so people can’t mistake it for another tree. The baobab is very wide at the base, so people often take shelter under it. One Australian baobab was so large that people were able to turn part of the tree into a small room. Travelers were accommodated inside the tree room as a resting place when they went on a trip to the city. The tree itself was so strong and wide that it could hold a large group of people. The oldest tree in the world is over 1, 835 years old now.
People also call it the “giving tree”. The delicious tree’s fruit is eaten in many African countries. The fruits have also been found to be very healthy. People make porridge and drinks from the fruit. Since the tree grows in dry environments, it has to store water. The tree takes in water when it is wet. During dry seasons, the baobab tree can use the stored water, and people can also get clean drinking water from it. Some baobabs can store thousands of gallons of water, which helps people survive in dry areas. Of course, the baobabs also provide the people of sunny South Africa with shelters during hot African days.

What is your first memory of being in the kitchen For me, it was the first time to help prepare for a big meal on New Year’s Day. My father was the cook that day. We did three dishes.
The first dish was turkey. It isn’t a traditional food in our country, but my grandpa likes its taste. To finish it, my dad mixed together some bread pieces, onions, salt and pepper at first. Next, he filled the turkey with the bread mix. Then, I helped put the turkey in a hot oven and cooked it at a very high temperature.
The second one was Russian soup. First, I cut up some different kinds of fresh vegetables and beef. Next, my dad put the beef, carrots and potatoes into a pot and added some water and cooked them for 30 minutes. Then, he covered them with cabbages, tomatoes and onions and cooked for another 10 minutes. Finally, he added some salt.
To make the last one, we needed to cut the chicken into pieces. And when the chicken soup became very hot, we put the eggs, meat and lettuce (生菜) in the pot one by one. At last, we put the rice noodles into the chicken soup. After all these were finished, it was time to eat the big meal together!

Tanghulu is a traditional snack from Northern China. People of all ages love it, especially kids.
It is usually made of haws (山楂), which are full of vitamin C. About 800 years ago, one of the emperor’s wives was sick and had a poor appetite. The doctor told her to eat 10 boiled haws with sugar before dinner. She felt better after two weeks. People heard about it and started making it too. They put haws on sticks, dipped them in hot sugary syrup (糖浆), and dried. The syrup made a hard and sweet shell around haws, like wearing a sugar jacket. They taste both sweet and sour at the same time.
Now people use many other fruits to make Tanghulu, such as cherry tomatoes, oranges, strawberries, blueberries, kiwis, bananas, or grapes. To make Tanghulu at home is super easy, and takes less than 20 minutes. Whether you’re looking for a quick snack for yourself or treating friends, Tanghulu is a good choice. Here are the steps:
a) Thread each fruit onto a bamboo stick. You can use the whole fruit or cut it into small pieces.
b) Make the syrup. Cook the sugar with water until it turns into large bubbles.
c) Carefully dip the fruit into the hot syrup, and then quickly put it into the ice water. This will help harden the syrup.

16-year-old Pat Tulloch has a different hobby. She makes cheese on the family farm in Australia. She began by making yogurt (酸奶) with her mother when she was little. Then she started watching her father’s workers make cheese. When she was ten, she made some cheese herself for the first time. “It wasn’t great at the beginning,” she says, “but the workers told me what I was doing wrong. I tried hard day and night, and I slowly got better.”
Pat always needs good milk for her cheese, but she doesn’t have to buy it. Her parents keep about 100 cows on their farm. Pat can just ask them when she needs more. Last year, Pat’s neighbour gave her a young cow to keep and look after, but it doesn’t produce (生产) milk to make cheese yet.
Pat helped her family create many kinds of cheese. This year they won a prize for one of them. “Last month we started selling cheese in New Zealand. People there read about our prize in a food magazine. Soon we’ re going to do some advertisements (广告), too.”
Pat’s next idea is to post some recipes (烹饪法) for cooking with cheese on the Internet such as having cheese with eggs for breakfast. She also thinks that people can eat cheese with pasta (意大利面). “I hope a restaurant might buy some one day,” she says. But right now Pat is still at school. “Making cheese is fun and winning a prize for it is great, but doing well in my studies is more important now.”

I am a 13-year-old girl and for as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to be a pilot. I would spend hours watching the planes at the airport take off from the runway. I love the feeling of packing my bags, traveling to some places that I have never explored (探索) before.
